    I’ve been trying to put my finger on the Taylor Swift phenomenon for some time now. Evidently people pay obscene amounts of money to see her, and she is breaking world records on her latest tour. By all accounts (well, not quite all) it’s worth seeing, as Miss Swift parades out on the stage in outfit after outfit and dazzles swarms of people with a show like Superbowl halftime on crack. What’s going on here really, though? In ancient Babylonian mythology, the goddess Inanna gets kicked out of the Babylonians’ version of the Garden of Eden, then returns to exact her revenge on its inhabitants and their god. For a brief time, Inanna was the chief goddess of the pantheon. When King Sargon the Akkadian appointed his daughter high priestess over the first Mesopotamian empire, she dedicated herself to the glories of Inanna. Unfortunately but unsurprisingly this included a lot of ritual sex. Inanna was the sex goddess not only of Babylon, but all the world. The Babylonians, Greeks, Romans, and pretty much everyone else recognized that they all worshiped this same goddess, though she had different names and slightly different origin stories depending on the culture. She was Aphrodite, Venus, Astarte, Ashtoreth, Isis, Lillith, and a host of other names. Yet everyone saw that she was really just the one spirit of illicit sex. Moderns don’t believe in spirits, demons, and goddesses — officially at least. We still have our myths about them, though, like Peter Pan’s Tinkerbell, the sexy fairy. Even in the 1950s Disney cartoon, Tinkerbell’s miniskirt is always just about ready to get hiked up too far. She cannot tolerate Peter’s interest in a sensible girl like Wendy. She would rather kill Wendy, in fact, than give up Peter to the pleasantries of a family life and devoted love in the bonds of marriage. Tinkerbell is one of the best pictures of Astarte in recent years, who comes to bring her flirtatious delights, stays to keep men in a state of perpetual adolescence, and would (if she could) kill the women who might possibly make us into men.     To mention abortion and infanticide in the same breath is a provocation. A majority of voters in Britain and America regard abortion as permissible in some circumstances, whereas very few are willing to say the same of infanticide (with some notable exceptions, as we will see). But this distinction has not been made by all peoples at all times. The anthropologist David F. Lancy describes the “far more common pattern”: Among the ancient Greeks and Romans sickly, unattractive, or unwanted infants were “exposed” or otherwise eliminated; the Chinese and Hindus of India have, since time immemorial, destroyed daughters at birth, to open the way for a new pregnancy and a more desirable male offspring; the Japanese likened infanticide to thinning the rice plants in their paddies; among foragers such as the Inuit or the Jivaro, unwanted babies were left to nature to claim. Modern technologies such as ultrasound allow us to identify undesirable characteristics (for instance, female sex or Down syndrome) earlier than our ancestors could, but the most common reasons given by women seeking abortions today—poverty, fetal disability, and simple unwantedness—were the same reasons given by mothers and fathers who killed their newborn infants in other times and places. Historical and anthropological accuracy therefore demands that we plot the acts of abortion and infanticide on a chronological continuum since they have typically been performed for the same reasons and have been permitted in accordance with the same moral calculus. It was the arrival of Christianity that disrupted the Romans’ favored methods of keeping reproduction in check, with laws against infanticide, and then abortion, imposed by Christian emperors from the late fourth century

  • Many professing Christians fear death because, though they may consent to believing cognitively or, perhaps better, doctrinally, that salvation is only by faith in the meritorious work of Christ on the cross (Eph. 2:8-9), there yet exists a still, small voice within them that faintly but incessantly tries to convince them that their works (e.g. behavior), or lack thereof, will ultimately bring them short of heaven despite what Christ has vicariously accomplished on their behalf (Rom. 5:6).

    If that is where you are today as you read this, I want to encourage you with these words from the apostle John in 1 Jn. 2:25, “And this is the promise which He Himself has made to us: eternal life.” The word “promise” is the Greek noun “epaggelia” (ἐπαγγελία), a legal term which, in the context of 1 Jn. 2:25, means that God, who cannot lie (Num. 23:19; Tit. 1:2; Heb. 6:18), is unconditionally bound and obligated by His own word to bring to pass that which He has said He will do.

    In 1 Jn. 5:13, John writes, “These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.” If you have truly placed your faith and trust in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins (Rom. 10:9), you have eternal life right now—today. Moreover, you will never lose it (1 Pet. 1:3-9), because the God in whom you have placed your trust and faith has bound Himself—by Himself—to keep His promise.

    The only question now is: Are you going to believe God or that still, small voice in your head?

    15We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles,

    16Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

    17But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid.

    18For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.

    19For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.

    For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

    Paul was bold in his stance for the Gospel, despite the fact that he was spouting a worldview that was almost unbelievable: that Jesus Christ was crucified, dead and buried, but was raised to life and now lives at the right hand of the Father. To the carnal mind, this is foolishness! There is no way that happened. But to the believer, it is their lifeline. It is what changed the trajectory of the believer's life and eternity. It is truth, believed by faith, and that faith is only attainable by the power of the Holy Spirit. No one can be saved without placing their faith in the fact that Jesus died and was raised again to life.

    Paul was not only bold in his stance, but he was clear about his target. His message was good for all, the Jews and the Greeks. The same is true today. The Gospel is salvation for the Jewish and non-Jewish communities. It is available to all and it works for all. No matter your ethnicity or nationality, if you place your faith in the LORD Jesus, repent of your sin and submit your life to Him, He will welcome you into the kingdom of God. He has a place prepared for you, which is called heaven, where all of the believers will spend eternity after the point of physical death, or the rapture, whichever happens first.

    If you do not know Him, don't let this moment pass without repenting of your sin. Call on Him to be the Savior in your life and LORD over your life. You do not want to leave earth without the Savior. Romans 10:9-13

    Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

    I have often heard criticism of Peter for his bold stance on the things in which he believed. While he was human and flawed and imperfect and may have done and said some things that he should not have, his boldness and direct approach to the need of the sinner in this verse is clear and impressive and necessary. The person who is without Christ needs to hear the truth of their peril if they do not turn from their wicked ways. They need to understand their fate if they die without coming to the saving knowledge of the LORD Jesus. They need to hear that there is no other way to come into the presence of the Father for all eternity without submitting their earthly lives to Son.

    Peter preached with the authority of the Holy Spirit. He told his listeners to REPENT. The Greek word for repent is Metanoeo, which is very dogmatic in its definition. It means to make a drastic change. This word called for the hearers to turn from their lives of sin to submission to the one true God.

    Peter continued by urging his hearers, once they had repented, to be baptized. Baptism is not a part of the salvation experience itself, but it is an external symbolism of an internal work of the Holy Spirit. In baptism, the believer shows the world that he is dead to sin and alive in Christ. He goes down into the water as his sin went into the grave with Christ; he comes out of the water just as Jesus came out of the grave victorious over death. This is why believers' baptism is in "the Name of Jesus Christ" so that there is no confusion as to whom the baptism is related.

    The act of baptism has nothing to do with salvation. There are people who are saved who are never baptized (Luke 23:32-43) and there are people who are baptized who are not saved.

    As a young girl, I walked an aisle and confessed a salvation that I did not possess and was baptized shortly thereafter. The leaders in that church had so little discernment that they had no idea that I was pressured into making a confession of faith. It wasn't until seven years later that I truly placed my faith in the Christ. The LORD convicted me over thirty years later that I needed to be baptized as a believer. My point is that my baptism made a statement, but it had nothing to do with my faith.

    If you are a believer in the LORD Jesus and have not been baptized, do so as quickly as possible. Baptism as a believer is obedience to God. If you have not placed your faith in Christ, don't let this moment pass. You don't know when the LORD will require your soul. If you die without faith in Him, you will spend eternity in hell. Confess your sin to Him today. Ask Him to forgive you and be LORD of your life. Cry out to Him as if your life depends on it....because it does.

    After I retired, I worked part-time for eighteen months in a grocery store’s meat department. I know how sausage is made. And I’m aware that cardiologists warn us about eating sausage because of the fat, but it’s the fat that makes sausage taste so good.
    If only that were the true about the fat Congress mixes in the sausage it passes. The fat has nothing to do with the legislation’s original purpose but wins the favor of members whose constituencies’ special interests are included.
    Tragically, the same kind of thing occurs in some parts of Christendom whose churches participate in what they call ecumenism. They are willing to overlook the nonbiblical beliefs of others in exchange for theirs being accepted. All in the name of unity!
    If you consult a good English dictionary for the meaning of the adjective “ecumenical,” you will discover something interesting. That word is derived from the Greek word “oikoumenikos,” which literally means “of the world.”
    Here’s an important question for every believer: “What kind of unity do we have with the world?”
    In John 15:19 Jesus said to his disciples, “If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.”
    Our Lord told them that belief in him and his word would divide even families. He said in Luke 12:53, “The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”
    Our basis for unity must be belief in Jesus alone and what Paul declared in 2 Timothy 3:16 is God’s inspired scripture which is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness.

    1Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.

    8And there were many lights in the upper chamber, where they were gathered together.

    9And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead.

    10And Paul went down, and fell on him, and embracing him said, Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him.

    11When he therefore was come up again, and had broken bread, and eaten, and talked a long while, even till break of day, so he departed.

    18And when they were come to him, he said unto them, Ye know, from the first day that I came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all seasons,

    19Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews:

    20And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house,

    21Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

    22And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there:

    9Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace:

    10For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city.

    11And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.

    12And when Gallio was the deputy of Achaia, the Jews made insurrection with one accord against Paul, and brought him to the judgment seat,

    13Saying, This fellow persuadeth men to worship God contrary to the law.

    14And when Paul was now about to open his mouth, Gallio said unto the Jews, If it were a matter of wrong or wicked lewdness, O ye Jews, reason would that I should bear with you:

    15But if it be a question of words and names, and of your law, look ye to it; for I will be no judge of such matters.

    16And he drave them from the judgment seat.

    17Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes, the chief ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment seat. And Gallio cared for none of those things.

    18And Paul after this tarried there yet a good while, and then took his leave of the brethren, and sailed thence into Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila; having shorn his head in Cenchrea: for he had a vow.

    19And he came to Ephesus, and left them there: but he himself entered into the synagogue, and reasoned with the Jews.

    20When they desired him to tarry longer time with them, he consented not;

    21But bade them farewell, saying, I must by all means keep this feast that cometh in Jerusalem: but I will return again unto you, if God will. And he sailed from Ephesus.

    22And when he had landed at Caesarea, and gone up, and saluted the church, he went down to Antioch.

    23And after he had spent some time there, he departed, and went over all the country of Galatia and Phrygia in order, strengthening all the disciples.

    24And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus.

    25This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John.

    Acts Chapter 18 1After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth; 2And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them. 3And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers. 4And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks. 5And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ. 6And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed, he shook his raiment, and said unto them, Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean: from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles. 7And he departed thence, and entered into a certain man's house, named Justus, one that worshipped God, whose house joined hard to the synagogue. 8And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized. 9Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace: 10For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city. 11And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them. 12And when Gallio was the deputy of Achaia, the Jews made insurrection with one accord against Paul, and brought him to the judgment seat, 13Saying, This fellow persuadeth men to worship God contrary to the law. 14And when Paul was now about to open his mouth, Gallio said unto the Jews, If it were a matter of wrong or wicked lewdness, O ye Jews, reason would that I should bear with you: 15But if it be a question of words and names, and of your law, look ye to it; for I will be no judge of such matters. 16And he drave them from the judgment seat. 17Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes, the chief ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment seat. And Gallio cared for none of those things. 18And Paul after this tarried there yet a good while, and then took his leave of the brethren, and sailed thence into Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila; having shorn his head in Cenchrea: for he had a vow. 19And he came to Ephesus, and left them there: but he himself entered into the synagogue, and reasoned with the Jews. 20When they desired him to tarry longer time with them, he consented not; 21But bade them farewell, saying, I must by all means keep this feast that cometh in Jerusalem: but I will return again unto you, if God will. And he sailed from Ephesus. 22And when he had landed at Caesarea, and gone up, and saluted the church, he went down to Antioch. 23And after he had spent some time there, he departed, and went over all the country of Galatia and Phrygia in order, strengthening all the disciples. 24And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus. 25This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John. 26And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly. 27And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was come, helped them much which had believed through grace: 28For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publickly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ.

    1Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:

    2And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

    3Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.

    4And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.

    5But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

    6And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

    7Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.

    8And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.

    9And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.

    10And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.

    11These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

    12Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.

    13But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.

    14And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.

    15And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.

    16Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

    17Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.

    18Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

    19And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?

    20For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

    21(For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

    22Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

    23For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

    24God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

    25Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

    26And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

    27That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

    28For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

    29Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.

    30And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

    31Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

    32And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.

    33So Paul departed from among them.

    34Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

    1And it came to pass in Iconium, that they went both together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spake, that a great multitude both of the Jews and also of the Greeks believed.

    2But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren.

    3Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands.

    4But the multitude of the city was divided: and part held with the Jews, and part with the apostles.

    5And when there was an assault made both of the Gentiles, and also of the Jews with their rulers, to use them despitefully, and to stone them,

    6They were ware of it, and fled unto Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and unto the region that lieth round about:

    7And there they preached the gospel.

    8And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother's womb, who never had walked:

    9The same heard Paul speak: who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed,

    10Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked.

    11And when the people saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the speech of Lycaonia, The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men.

    12And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was the chief speaker.

    13Then the priest of Jupiter, which was before their city, brought oxen and garlands unto the gates, and would have done sacrifice with the people.

    14Which when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of, they rent their clothes, and ran in among the people, crying out,

    15And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein:

    16Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways.

    17Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.

    18And with these sayings scarce restrained they the people, that they had not done sacrifice unto them.

    19And there came thither certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium, who persuaded the people, and, having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing he had been dead.

    20Howbeit, as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up, and came into the city: and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe.

    21And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch,

    22Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.

    23And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed.

    24And after they had passed throughout Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia.

    25And when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down into Attalia:

    26And thence sailed to Antioch, from whence they had been recommended to the grace of God for the work which they fulfilled.

    27And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles.
