    Chapter 19

    1 Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.

    2 Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth.

    3 The foolishness of man perverteth his way: and his heart fretteth against the LORD.

    4 Wealth maketh many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbour.

    5 A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape.

    6 Many will intreat the favour of the prince: and every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts.

    7 All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? he pursueth them with words, yet they are wanting to him.

    8 He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good.

    9 A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish.

    10 Delight is not seemly for a fool; much less for a servant to have rule over princes.

    11 The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.

    12 The king's wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favour is as dew upon the grass.

    13 A foolish son is the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.

    14 House and riches are the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent wife is from the LORD.

    15 Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.

    16 He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his own soul; but he that despiseth his ways shall die.

    17 He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.

    18 Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.

    19 A man of great wrath shall suffer punishment: for if thou deliver him, yet thou must do it again.

    20 Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.

    21 There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.

    22 The desire of a man is his kindness: and a poor man is better than a liar.

    23 The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.

    24 A slothful man hideth his hand in his bosom, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.

    25 Smite a scorner, and the simple will beware: and reprove one that hath understanding, and he will understand knowledge.

    26 He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach.

    27 Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.

    28 An ungodly witness scorneth judgment: and the mouth of the wicked devoureth iniquity.

    29 Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools.

    15 Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.

    26 For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adulteress will hunt for the precious life.

    27 Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?

    28 Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?

    34 For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.

  • Christian, when God saved you, He did not leave you as a mushroom to grow without light, to figure all things out for yourself. He gives us His word, which reveals God to us, and just as importantly, He gives us His Spirit to dwell within us (1 Cor. 13:6), to teach us (1 Jn. 2:27), to guide us into all truth (Jn. 16:13), and who reveals that which is Jesus’ to us (Jn. 16:15).

    We need not walk in darkness. His word is a lamp for our steps, a light that illuminates our way (Ps. 119:105). And His Spirit is there to guide us the entire time. It is He who washes us with regeneration and renewal (Tit. 3:5), who gives us the new birth (Jn. 3:5-8), who seals us and is our promise of redemption (2 Cor. 1:22; Eph. 1:13-14), who informs us of the things freely given us by God (1 Cor. 2:12).

    He empowers us to bear witness about Jesus (Acts 1:8), He helps us in our weakness, and He intercedes for us when we know not how to pray (Rom. 8:26). What’s more, He reveals the thoughts and wisdom of God to us, which the man without God’s Spirit can neither understand nor accept (1 Cor. 2:13-15).

    Brethren, you are not walking alone. Through the Spirit we have fellowship with one another and with God. Let us not grieve Him (Eph. 4:30), but lean on Him, walk by Him, live by Him (Gal. 5:16,25), and bear the fruit He causes to grow in our lives (Gal. 5:22-23).

    Do not stress or be anxious; receive strength and comfort from the Comforter who now lives in you.

    There are times when all the promises and doctrines of the Bible are of no avail, unless a gracious hand shall apply them to us. We are thirsty, but too faint to crawl to the water-brook. When a soldier is wounded in battle it is of little use for him to know that there are those at the hospital who can bind up his wounds, and medicines there to ease all the pains which he now suffers: what he needs is to be carried thither, and to have the remedies applied. It is thus with our souls, and to meet this need there is one, even the Spirit of truth, who takes of the things of Jesus, and applies them to us. Think not that Christ hath placed His joys on heavenly shelves that we may climb up to them for ourselves, but He draws near, and sheds His peace abroad in our hearts. O Christian, if thou art tonight labouring under deep distresses, thy Father does not give thee promises and then leave thee to draw them up from the Word like buckets from a well, but the promises He has written in the Word He will write anew on your heart. He will manifest His love to you, and by His blessed Spirit, dispel your cares and troubles. Be it known unto thee, O mourner, that it is God's prerogative to wipe every tear from the eye of His people. The good Samaritan did not say, "Here is the wine, and here is the oil for you"; he actually poured in the oil and the wine. So Jesus not only gives you the sweet wine of the promise, but holds the golden chalice to your lips, and pours the life-blood into your mouth. The poor, sick, way-worn pilgrim is not merely strengthened to walk, but he is borne on eagles' wings. Glorious gospel! which provides everything for the helpless, which draws nigh to us when we cannot reach after it- brings us grace before we seek for grace! Here is as much glory in the giving as in the gift. Happy people who have the Holy Ghost to bring Jesus to them.

  • Christian, are you growing in your relationship with Christ? Are you growing in likeness to Him? Is this not our call, to be transformed by His word and conformed to His image (Rom. 12:2)?

    If you are stagnating, if you find yourself in bondage to sin, why? Paul exhorts that we “walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, being darkened in their understanding” (Eph. 4:17-18).

    He has given us what we need. We have His Spirit dwelling within us (1 Cor. 3:16). He teaches us (1 Cor. 2:12-13; 1 Jn. 2:27). He intercedes when we know not how to pray (Rom. 8:26). He leads us into truth (Jn. 16:13). He empowers us to be witnesses for Christ (Acts 1:8).

    We have His word, which He Himself breathed out and is profitable for teaching, training in righteousness, reproof, and correction (2 Tim. 3:16-17). It nourishes our spirits (Deut. 8:3; Mt. 4:4). It is a lamp to our feet and a light to our paths (Ps. 119:105). It helps keep our way pure (Ps. 119:9-11).

    We have our faith, by which we joyfully withstand trials and are made mature (Jas. 1:2-4).

    How then, unless we are new to the faith, should we still be babes requiring milk and unable to consume solid food (1 Cor. 3:2-3; Heb. 5:12-13)?

    Let us move on beyond the basics then, pressing on to maturity (Heb. 6:1) and grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Pet. 3:18).

    Many Christians remain stunted and dwarfed in spiritual things, so as to present the same appearance year after year. No up-springing of advanced and refined feeling is manifest in them. They exist but do not "grow up into Him in all things." But should we rest content with being in the "green blade," when we might advance to "the ear," and eventually ripen into the "full corn in the ear?" Should we be satisfied to believe in Christ, and to say, "I am safe," without wishing to know in our own experience more of the fulness which is to be found in Him. It should not be so; we should, as good traders in heaven's market, covet to be enriched in the knowledge of Jesus. It is all very well to keep other men's vineyards, but we must not neglect our own spiritual growth and ripening. Why should it always be winter time in our hearts? We must have our seed time, it is true, but O for a spring time- yea, a summer season, which shall give promise of an early harvest. If we would ripen in grace, we must live near to Jesus- in His presence- ripened by the sunshine of His smiles. We must hold sweet communion with Him. We must leave the distant view of His face and come near, as John did, and pillow our head on His breast; then shall we find ourselves advancing in holiness, in love, in faith, in hope- yea, in every precious gift. As the sun rises first on mountain-tops and gilds them with his light, and presents one of the most charming sights to the eye of the traveller; so is it one of the most delightful contemplations in the world to mark the glow of the Spirit's light on the head of some saint, who has risen up in spiritual stature, like Saul, above his fellows, till, like a mighty Alp, snow-capped, he reflects first among the chosen, the beams of the Sun of Righteousness, and bears the sheen of His effulgence high aloft for all to see, and seeing it, to glorify His Father which is in heaven.

    2 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.

    4 For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.

    5 But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;

    6 And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.

    7 Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,

    8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.

    9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

    11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.

    19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

    20 These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.

    21 Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.

    22 And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.

    23 But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.

    24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

    26 But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs.

    27 And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table.

    32 Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.

    33 And his disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude?

    34 And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes.

    35 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground.

    36 And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.

  • Brethren, don’t let a dry spell discourage you. Have you been toiling but not seeing fruit? It may be that the Lord is simply holding back for a time in order to provide a windfall.

    This may be in witnessing. It may be in other areas. Do not be distracted by the things of this world (1 Jn. 2:15-16). And continue to be “steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Cor. 15:58).

    Listen for the Lord to tell you when and where to let down your net, and it will end up full beyond its capacity. Remember, our salvation, and our fruit is not dependent upon our work, but upon Him who give grace to the one who believes.

    We learn from this narrative, the necessity of human agency. The draught of fishes was miraculous, yet neither the fisherman nor his boat, nor his fishing tackle were ignored; but all were used to take the fishes. So in the saving of souls, God worketh by means; and while the present economy of grace shall stand, God will be pleased by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. When God worketh without instruments, doubtless He is glorified; but He hath Himself selected the plan of instrumentality as being that by which He is most magnified in the earth. Means of themselves are utterly unavailing. "Master, we have toiled all the night and have taken nothing." What was the reason of this? Were they not fishermen plying their special calling? Verily, they were no raw hands; they understood the work. Had they gone about the toil unskillfully? No. Had they lacked industry? No, they had toiled. Had they lacked perseverance? No, they had toiled all the night. Was there a deficiency of fish in the sea? Certainly not, for as soon as the Master came, they swam to the net in shoals. What, then, is the reason? Is it because there is no power in the means of themselves apart from the presence of Jesus? "Without Him we can do nothing." But with Christ we can do all things. Christ's presence confers success. Jesus sat in Peter's boat, and His will, by a mysterious influence, drew the fish to the net. When Jesus is lifted up in His Church, His presence is the Church's power- the shout of a king is in the midst of her. "I, if I be lifted up, will draw all men unto me." Let us go out this morning on our work of soul fishing, looking up in faith, and around us in solemn anxiety. Let us toil till night comes, and we shall not labour in vain, for He who bids us let down the net, will fill it with fishes.

  • Brethren, we so often are caught up in our lives here in the physical realm that we forget or neglect the fact that there is a greater realm beyond this one, a spiritual realm. In that realm reside God’s angels, those ministering spirits and messengers who watch over us and attend us.

    These angels heralded the birth of our Lord. They proclaimed the good news of salvation to the shepherds in the field. They informed Mary and those with her that Jesus was no longer in the tomb.

    Yet it is to use that Jesus gives help; not them. They are there to help us.

    But it is also for this reason that we must hold fast to God’s word and not depart from it (Heb. 2:1). “How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to your word” (Ps. 119:9).

    The angels are witnesses surrounding us, so let us lay aside the sin that so easily entangles us and focus on our Lord, fixing our gaze upon our eternal destination (Heb. 12:1-2), being transformed by the renewing of our minds so that we do not conform to this world (Rom. 12:2).

    "Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?" Hebrews 1:14

    Angels are the unseen attendants of the saints of God; they bear us up in their hands, lest we dash our foot against a stone. Loyalty to their Lord leads them to take a deep interest in the children of His love; they rejoice over the return of the prodigal to his father's house below, and they welcome the advent of the believer to the King's palace above. In olden times the sons of God were favoured with their visible appearance, and at this day, although unseen by us, heaven is still opened, and the angels of God ascend and descend upon the Son of man, that they may visit the heirs of salvation. Seraphim still fly with live coals from off the altar to touch the lips of men greatly beloved.   • Nine years ago today, my hero, my daddy, went home to be with the LORD. I was standing by his bedside when he took his last breath on this earth. Only four hours earlier, he cried out to the LORD and asked Him to save him. I praise God for not allowing me to give up on witnessing to my dad and praying for him, even though for many years, giving up was in my heart and mind. I miss him so much. Even though the pain has dulled a bit, his absence is still felt. Life has not been the same without him, but I would never begrudge him being in the presence of our Savior, enjoying all perfection forever. #MissingPaPa

  • People are laying blame for the shooting of Charlie Kirk on all sorts of external influences: politics, religion, rhetoric. What most seem to ignore, and what all of those "influences" reflect, is the basic nature of humanity, what dwells within us all when we have not received the change of heart that can be wrought only by God through Jesus Christ. Jesus said, "out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders" (Mt. 15:19).

    Like it or not, this is human nature. And when God is rejected, He turns us over to it:

    "And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them" (Rom. 1:28-32).

    If that last paragraph does not describe America today, I don't know what does.

    It is time to turn back to God. People need the redeeming grace offered only through Jesus Christ. He is "the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but by" Him (Jn. 14:6). For, "there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12).

    So I urge you today, "believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved" (Acts 16:31).

    Paul attested that the gospel was not only the power of God for salvation to those who believe (Rom. 1:16), but that it was simple:

    "For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep; then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles; and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also" (1 Cor. 15:3-8).

    This isn't a fairytale. It is attested by witnesses, not only the 500 mentioned here who were alive to refute Paul if he lied, but through so many other historical documents and witnesses.

    Therefore, I implore you today, follow the Scripture that, "if you confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation" (Rom. 10:9-10).

  • Christian, can you say with honesty that you love the Lord with all your soul? Does the verse, "You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might" (Deut. 6:5, Mt. 22:37) wash over you like a waterfall, or does it ring hollow for you?

    If it rings hollow, set aside time to spend in His word. Read it. Pray over it. Meditate on it.

    Spend time in prayer speaking to God. There is no prescription, there are no special words. Just open your heart up to Him.

    One cannot have a relationship without communication. God speaks to us through His word; we speak to Him through prayer. Both take time, and this time is the only way to build and strengthen that relationship.

    Even if you do feel you love the Lord with all your soul, are you taking the time to truly know Him?

    If you are not already, make today the day you begin spending time with Him in reading and in prayer. In this way you will learn to love Him with all your soul.

Many can only say of Jesus that they hope they love Him; they trust they love Him; but only a poor and shallow experience will be content to stay here. No one ought to give any rest to his spirit till he feels quite sure about a matter of such vital importance. We ought not to be satisfied with a superficial hope that Jesus loves us, and with a bare trust that we love Him. The old saints did not generally speak with "buts," and "ifs," and "hopes," and "trusts," but they spoke positively and plainly. "I know whom I have believed," saith Paul. "I know that my Redeemer liveth," saith Job. Get positive knowledge of your love of Jesus, and be not satisfied till you can speak of your interest in Him as a reality, which you have made sure by having received the witness of the Holy Spirit, and His seal upon your soul by faith.

    True love to Christ is in every case the Holy Spirit's work, and must be wrought in the heart by Him. He is the efficient cause of it; but the logical reason why we love Jesus lies in Himself. Why do we love Jesus? Because He first loved us. Why do we love Jesus? Because He "gave Himself for us." We have life through His death; we have peace through His blood. Though He was rich, yet for our sakes He became poor. Why do we love Jesus? Because of the excellency of His person. We are filled with a sense of His beauty! an admiration of His charms! a consciousness of His infinite perfection! His greatness, goodness, and loveliness, in one resplendent ray, combine to enchant the soul till it is so ravished that it exclaims, "Yea, He is altogether lovely." Blessed love this- a love which binds the heart with chains more soft than silk, and yet more firm than adamant!

  • Brethren, do you have a family member who is sick? Fall on your knees, call upon Christ, and tell Him. For we are told, "humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you" (1 Pet. 5:6-7).

    Also, forget not that family is a blessing. See your spouse, your siblings, your children, your parents, your in-laws through the eyes of Christ. Are they saved? Show them grace. Are they lost? Show them compassion. Christ must be first in all things, which is why He tells us we must "hate" our families (Lk. 14:26). He does not truly mean we should "hate" them, but that He must hold the primary position in your heart.

    So, let us love and enjoy our families, pray for them in their illnesses, and lead them to Christ, all the while putting Him first. After all, "This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent" (Jn. 17:3).

    Very interesting is this little peep into the house of the Apostolic Fisherman. We see at once that household joys and cares are no hindrance to the full exercise of ministry, nay, that since they furnish an opportunity for personally witnessing the Lord's gracious work upon one's own flesh and blood, they may even instruct the teacher better than any other earthly discipline. It concerns one of His people, and therefore will not be trivial to Him. Observe, that at once the Saviour restored the sick woman; none can heal as He does. We may not make sure that the Lord will at once remove all disease from those we love, but we may know that believing prayer for the sick is far more likely to be followed by restoration than anything else in the world; and where this avails not, we must meekly bow to His will by whom life and death are determined. The tender heart of Jesus waits to hear our griefs, let us pour them into His patient ear.
    Brethren, do you have a family member who is sick? Fall on your knees, call upon Christ, and tell Him. For we are told, "humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you" (1 Pet. 5:6-7). Also, forget not that family is a blessing. See your spouse, your siblings, your children, your parents, your in-laws through the eyes of Christ. Are they saved? Show them grace. Are they lost? Show them compassion. Christ must be first in all things, which is why He tells us we must "hate" our families (Lk. 14:26). He does not truly mean we should "hate" them, but that He must hold the primary position in your heart. So, let us love and enjoy our families, pray for them in their illnesses, and lead them to Christ, all the while putting Him first.
