Genesis 1:3
And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
God started out creating light. He did not need light to see, because light and dark are no different to Him. He can see through either! He created the light for humanity, so that we might be able to see His works and His glory. As I think of His creating light first, I think of Who He is: Jesus said, "I am the Light of the world: he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the Light of life..." (John 8:12). Jesus Himself is the Light that takes the darkness away. The enemy of our soul is the darkness, and without the LORD Jesus, he has free reign to take control. Jesus, however, defeated the darkness on the cross. He took down death and hell and darkness and the grave. Through Him, we can walk in the light and have power over sin. God knew what He was doing by starting with light!
James 1:17 calls God "...the Father of lights..." The visible light comes from Him. The Light of the world is Who He is. He is the Creator and the Godhead. He is the Light that never contains darkness. His light shines on the earth with a brightness that will never be matched. The Light will never be infected by the darkness of this world.
Recently, I heard a plan that the government was hatching to "cover the sun". They mentioned that the sun was part of climate change, and the only way to control it was to somehow make sure they could cover the light that emanates to the earth. As a Bible student, my initial thought was that this is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. But as I have thought of it in terms of Genesis 1, I see now that it is not about covering the sun to protect the earth: it is about challenging God Who has sovereign control over everything that happens on the earth. There is no way that a human being will ever cover the light that the sun gives. There is no way that a human will ever have victory over the God Who created the heavens and the earth.
If you are not walking in the Light, don't let this moment pass without confessing your sins to the LORD and asking Him to forgive you. Ask Him to save you. He will not turn you away if you come to Him in sincerity (John 6:37). He gave His life for your salvation (John 3:16). He made it easy: all you need to do is place your faith in Him (Ephesians 2:8, Romans 10:9-13).
