• 2 Timothy 2:15-16
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

The apostle Paul wrote those words to his protege, Timothy. Paul knew that it would be crucial to Timothy's success as a pastor and his growth as a Christian to study God's Word. Understanding and knowledge of God's Word would cause Timothy to develop discernment and wisdom that would carry him forward like nothing else. Paul went on to advise Timothy not to participate in profane talk, because all that would lead to is ungodly behavior.

The same is true for us. If we study God's Word, develop a healthy understanding of the Word, and live out what we learn, we will never have to be ashamed because our lives will be pleasing to God. We should also avoid profane conversations, even on social media, because as believers, we always want our behavior to represent the fact that we belong to the LORD Jesus Christ.

Being a part of the family of God means that we are Christians, or "Christ-like" in our behavior. Being like Christ does not include inappropriate conversation or behavior. It means doing things and saying things that would not offend the Spirit of God. It means that, even though we know we will never be perfect on the earth, we strive for perfection in all our ways. Believers, spend some time today in the study of God's Word!

  • We’re here to be worshippers first and workers only second. We take a convert and immediately make a worker out of him. God never meant it to be so. God meant that a convert should learn to be a worshiper, and after that he can learn to be a worker…The work done by a worshiper will have eternity in it.

  • Colossians 3:1-2
Therefore, if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.

Believer, because we have been purchased by the blood of Christ, we are free from ceremonial law, as was ordered before His sacrifice. At the same time, we are not to live as the world lives. We are to seek the things above, where Christ is. Our mindset and behavior should reflect that we belong to Him, and we live to please Him.

Seek the things that belong to God. Study His Word and develop Godly wisdom and discernment. Set your affections on those things that He loves: His church, His people, His standard. As believers, we should use our energy to glorify Him and to draw the lost to Him.

We spend time with the people and the things that we love. How much do we really love God? How much time do we spend with Him? How important is His Word? Is it our main priority? How important is the church? How much time do we spend there? Do we attend on Sunday and forget everything Godly until next Sunday? How much time during the week do we spend in prayer? How much time do we spend meditating on the Word that is presented each Sunday? How much time do we spend sharing the Gospel with those who need to hear it? If we ask ourselves these questions, and we fall short, strong conviction should come upon us.

God's Word is an agent of change. There is no way that Holy Spirit filled believers can spend time in the Word and remain the same. Let the Word of God change your affections. Set your affections on the things that are eternal.

  • There is a kind of preaching that God blesses, specifically the proclamation that exalts the crucified Christ by the power of the Spirit. Conversely, there is a kind of preaching that God does not bless, a mere echoing of man’s empty wisdom that is devoid of Christ.
