People don't like believe that the government and the media would lie to them. After all, what would it benefit the public if they did? Of course, that question exposes the issue: it's not a matter of benefiting the public - it's a matter of what benefits those in government. The real reason for trying to censor opposing views on social media and in the main stream media is not to protect the public from "misinformation" as is the typical claim.
