    Chapter 5

    1 Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth; and I will pardon it.

    2 And though they say, The LORD liveth; surely they swear falsely.

    3 O LORD, are not thine eyes upon the truth? thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.

    4 Therefore I said, Surely these are poor; they are foolish: for they know not the way of the LORD, nor the judgment of their God.

    5 I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they have known the way of the LORD, and the judgment of their God: but these have altogether broken the yoke, and burst the bonds.

    6 Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, and a wolf of the evenings shall spoil them, a leopard shall watch over their cities: every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces: because their transgressions are many, and their backslidings are increased.

    7 How shall I pardon thee for this? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots' houses.

    8 They were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour's wife.

    9 Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

    10 Go ye up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her battlements; for they are not the LORD'S.

    11 For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, saith the LORD.

    12 They have belied the LORD, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine:

    13 And the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done unto them.

    14 Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.

    15 Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith the LORD: it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say.

    16 Their quiver is as an open sepulchre, they are all mighty men.

    17 And they shall eat up thine harvest, and thy bread, which thy sons and thy daughters should eat: they shall eat up thy flocks and thine herds: they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig trees: they shall impoverish thy fenced cities, wherein thou trustedst, with the sword.

    18 Nevertheless in those days, saith the LORD, I will not make a full end with you.

    19 And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore doeth the LORD our God all these things unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is not yours.

    20 Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying,

    21 Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not:

    22 Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it?

    23 But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone.

    24 Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.

    25 Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you.

    26 For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men.

    27 As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich.

    28 They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.

    29 Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

    30 A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land;

    31 The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?

    23 How canst thou say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou art a swift dromedary traversing her ways;

    24 A wild ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind at her pleasure; in her occasion who can turn her away? all they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.

    25 Withhold thy foot from being unshod, and thy throat from thirst: but thou saidst, There is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go.

    26 As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets,

    27 Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.

    28 But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah.

    29 Wherefore will ye plead with me? ye all have transgressed against me, saith the LORD.

    30 In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.

    31 O generation, see ye the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee?

    32 Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.

    33 Why trimmest thou thy way to seek love? therefore hast thou also taught the wicked ones thy ways.

    34 Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these.

    35 Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned.

    36 Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? thou also shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria.

    37 Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine head: for the LORD hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them.

    1 Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest?

    2 For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.

    3 He that killeth an ox is as if he slew a man; he that sacrificeth a lamb, as if he cut off a dog's neck; he that offereth an oblation, as if he offered swine's blood; he that burneth incense, as if he blessed an idol. Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations.

    4 I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.

    5 Hear the word of the LORD, ye that tremble at his word; Your brethren that hated you, that cast you out for my name's sake, said, Let the LORD be glorified: but he shall appear to your joy, and they shall be ashamed.

    6 A voice of noise from the city, a voice from the temple, a voice of the LORD that rendereth recompence to his enemies.

    7 Before she travailed, she brought forth; before her pain came, she was delivered of a man child.

    8 Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? or shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children.

    9 Shall I bring to the birth, and not cause to bring forth? saith the LORD: shall I cause to bring forth, and shut the womb? saith thy God.

    10 Rejoice ye with Jerusalem, and be glad with her, all ye that love her: rejoice for joy with her, all ye that mourn for her:

    11 That ye may suck, and be satisfied with the breasts of her consolations; that ye may milk out, and be delighted with the abundance of her glory.

    12 For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream: then shall ye suck, ye shall be borne upon her sides, and be dandled upon her knees.

    13 As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem.

    14 And when ye see this, your heart shall rejoice, and your bones shall flourish like an herb: and the hand of the LORD shall be known toward his servants, and his indignation toward his enemies.

    15 For, behold, the LORD will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire.

    16 For by fire and by his sword will the LORD plead with all flesh: and the slain of the LORD shall be many.

    17 They that sanctify themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens behind one tree in the midst, eating swine's flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse, shall be consumed together, saith the LORD.

    18 For I know their works and their thoughts: it shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come, and see my glory.

    19 And I will set a sign among them, and I will send those that escape of them unto the nations, to Tarshish, Pul, and Lud, that draw the bow, to Tubal, and Javan, to the isles afar off, that have not heard my fame, neither have seen my glory; and they shall declare my glory among the Gentiles.

    20 And they shall bring all your brethren for an offering unto the LORD out of all nations upon horses, and in chariots, and in litters, and upon mules, and upon swift beasts, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, saith the LORD, as the children of Israel bring an offering in a clean vessel into the house of the LORD.

    21 And I will also take of them for priests and for Levites, saith the LORD.

    22 For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain.

    23 And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.

    24 And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.

  • Christian, do not fear - keep the faith! For there is laid up for us who finish the course a crown of righteousness (2 Tim. 4:8). Looking forward to receiving this should strengthen us in our daily walk.

    We must never give up. We must fight the good fight. We all eventually will lay aside this earthly tent, and what is mortal will be replaced with what is immortal (2 Cor. 5:4).

    Yes, for now we groan. We wait eagerly for the redemption of our bodies (Rom. 8:23). We look forward in hope to our adoption as sons. We have not yet received the fulness of God’s promises, but not having seen it, we wait eagerly for it (Rom. 8:24-25).

    In the meantime, strive to show yourself a faithful worker, approved by God, rightly handling His word (2 Tim. 2:15). Live as a slave not of sin, but of righteousness (Rom. 6:16-20). Present your bodies a living sacrifice to God, which is true worship (Rom. 12:1). Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind (Rom. 12:2).

    Because blessed are you when you persevere; for once you are approved you will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those of us who love Him (Jam. 1:12). Amen.

    Doubting one! thou hast often said, "I fear I shall never enter heaven." Fear not! all the people of God shall enter there. I love the quaint saying of a dying man, who exclaimed, "I have no fear of going home; I have sent all before me; God's finger is on the latch of my door, and I am ready for Him to enter." "But," said one, "are you not afraid lest you should miss your inheritance?" "Nay," said he, "nay; there is one crown in heaven which the angel Gabriel could not wear, it will fit no head but mine. There is one throne in heaven which Paul the apostle could not fill; it was made for me, and I shall have it." O Christian, what a joyous thought! thy portion is secure; "there remaineth a rest." "But cannot I forfeit it?" No, it is entailed. If I be a child of God I shall not lose it. It is mine as securely as if I were there. Come with me, believer, and let us sit upon the top of Nebo, and view the goodly land, even Canaan. Seest thou that little river of death glistening in the sunlight, and across it dost thou see the pinnacles of the eternal city? Dost thou mark the pleasant country, and all its joyous inhabitants? Know, then, that if thou couldst fly across thou wouldst see written upon one of its many mansions, "This remaineth for such a one; preserved for him only. He shall be caught up to dwell for ever with God." Poor doubting one, see the fair inheritance; it is thine. If thou believest in the Lord Jesus, if thou hast repented of sin, if thou hast been renewed in heart, thou art one of the Lord's people, and there is a place reserved for thee, a crown laid up for thee, a harp specially provided for thee. No one else shall have thy portion, it is reserved in heaven for thee, and thou shalt have it ere long, for there shall be no vacant thrones in glory when all the chosen are gathered in.

If thou believest in the Lord Jesus, if thou hast repented of sin, if thou hast been renewed in heart, thou art one of the Lord's people, and there is a place reserved for thee, a crown laid up for thee, a harp specially provided for thee. No one else shall have thy portion, it is reserved in heaven for thee, and thou shalt have it ere long, for there shall be no vacant thrones in glory when all the chosen are gathered in.

  • Dear brethren, do you groan within yourself, eagerly awaiting our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies (Rom. 8:23)? It is well you do. Let us have the confidence of Paul that God, having begun a good work in you, will bring it to completion (Phil. 1:6).

    As Solomon asserts in Ecclesiastes, “the end of a matter is better than its beginning” (Ecc. 7:8).

    Yes! While we are blessed to have been called, humbled to be among the elect, our life in these tents is fraught with tribulation. Yet our trials here cannot compare to what God has prepared for us (1 Cor. 2:9). And such should be our focus, remembering that nothing can separate us from God’s love for us (Rom. 8:38), and that Jesus has gone to prepare a place for us so He can come to take us to be with Him (Jn. 14:2-3).

    Let us rejoice in this knowledge that, in the twinkling of an eye, we will be changed; we will put off this corruptible flesh and be clothed with incorruptible bodies (1 Cor. 15:52-54). Then we will go to be with Him forever, where there will no longer be pain nor tear, no illness or death, where God will be our temple and our sun; and indeed, the end of the salvation God wrought in Christ for us will be even better than the beginning!

    Look at David's Lord and Master; see His beginning. He was despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. Would you see the end? He sits at His Father's right hand, expecting until His enemies be made his footstool. "As He is, so are we also in this world." You must bear the cross, or you shall never wear the crown; you must wade through the mire, or you shall never walk the golden pavement. Cheer up, then, poor Christian. "Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof." See that creeping worm, how contemptible its appearance! It is the beginning of a thing. Mark that insect with gorgeous wings, playing in the sunbeams, sipping at the flower bells, full of happiness and life; that is the end thereof. That caterpillar is yourself, until you are wrapped up in the chrysalis of death; but when Christ shall appear you shall be like Him, for you shall see Him as He is. Be content to be like Him, a worm and no man, that like Him you may be satisfied when you wake up in His likeness. That rough-looking diamond is put upon the wheel of the lapidary. He cuts it on all sides. It loses much- much that seemed costly to itself. The king is crowned; the diadem is put upon the monarch's head with trumpet's joyful sound. A glittering ray flashes from that coronet, and it beams from that very diamond which was just now so sorely vexed by the lapidary. You may venture to compare yourself to such a diamond, for you are one of God's people; and this is the time of the cutting process.   • Isaiah prophesied hundreds of years prior to the event that, ”a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel” (Isa. 7:14). In miraculous manner the child would be conceived, like no one before, nor any after.

    Then this prophecy was fulfilled, not in splendor, but in humble circumstances.

    His parents were not royalty, but a carpenter and his betrothed.

    The one who would be called “God with us” was not born in regal fashion, but in a barn where He was laid in an animal feeding trough. His crib was not of gold and fine linen, but of wood and hay.

    The Lord of glory lay aside His majesty, and took the form of man, all so He could give His life “a ransom for many” (Mt. 20:28).

    Let us remember today this reason we celebrate, and give Him the honor and glory He deserves.

    Let us today go down to Bethlehem, and in company with wondering shepherds and adoring Magi, let us see Him who was born King of the Jews, for we by faith can claim an interest in Him, and can sing, "Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given." Jesus is Jehovah incarnate, our Lord and our God, and yet our brother and friend; let us adore and admire. Let us notice at the very first glance His miraculous conception. It was a thing unheard of before, and unparalleled since, that a virgin should conceive and bear a Son. The first promise ran thus, "The seed of the woman", not the offspring of the man. Since venturous woman led the way in the sin which brought forth Paradise lost, she, and she alone, ushers in the Regainer of Paradise. Our Saviour, although truly man, was as to His human nature the Holy One of God. Let us reverently bow before the holy Child whose innocence restores to manhood its ancient glory; and let us pray that He may be formed in us, the hope of glory. Fail not to note His humble parentage. His mother has been described simply as "a virgin," not a princess, or prophetess, nor a matron of large estate. True the blood of kings ran in her veins; nor was her mind a weak and untaught one, for she could sing most sweetly a song of praise; but yet how humble her position, how poor the man to whom she stood affianced, and how miserable the accommodation afforded to the new-born King!

  • Brethren, consider all that Christ gave up for you. He, being in the very form of God, being in heaven with God, humbled Himself, lowered Himself, to be clothed in flesh, taking human form, and leaving behind His glory.

    We often think simply of Him coming. John’s words echo in our ears that “He became flesh and dwelt among us,” but we forget all that He left behind to do so. As Paul wrote, “for your sake He became poor” (2 Cor. 8:9).

    Think about that. He traded His heavenly throne for a crown of thorns, and eternal glory for death on a cross. Why? So “that you through His poverty might become rich” (2 Cor. 8:9). And that we are, we are rich with life because He gives it to us abundantly (Jn. 10:10).

    Therefore, let us have this attitude which was in Christ, one of humility, of self-sacrifice, of considering others more important than ourselves (Phil. 2:3-8). Let us be obedient and humble ourselves before God (1 Pet. 5:6), emulating Jesus, following the example He set (1 Pet. 2:21), that as God highly exalted Christ (Phil. 2:9), He may one day exalt us as well (1 Pet. 5:6).

    "For your sakes he became poor." 2 Corinthians 8:9

    The Lord Jesus Christ was eternally rich, glorious, and exalted; but "though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor." As the rich saint cannot be true in his communion with his poor brethren unless of his substance he ministers to their necessities, so (the same rule holding with the head as between the members), it is impossible that our Divine Lord could have had fellowship with us unless He had imparted to us of His own abounding wealth, and had become poor to make us rich. Had He remained upon His throne of glory, and had we continued in the ruins of the fall without receiving His salvation, communion would have been impossible on both sides. Our position by the fall, apart from the covenant of grace, made it as impossible for fallen man to communicate with God as it is for Belial to be in concord with Christ. In order, therefore, that communion might be compassed, it was necessary that the rich kinsman should bestow his estate upon his poor relatives, that the righteous Saviour should give to His sinning brethren of His own perfection, and that we, the poor and guilty, should receive of His fulness grace for grace; that thus in giving and receiving, the One might descend from the heights, and the other ascend from the depths, and so be able to embrace each other in true and hearty fellowship. Poverty must be enriched by Him in whom are infinite treasures before it can venture to commune; and guilt must lose itself in imputed and imparted righteousness ere the soul can walk in fellowship with purity. Jesus must clothe His people in His own garments, or He cannot admit them into His palace of glory; and He must wash them in His own blood, or else they will be too defiled for the embrace of His fellowship.

    O believer, herein is love! For your sake the Lord Jesus "became poor" that He might lift you up into communion with Himself.

  • A person who is mentally repressed and a prisoner of their own impulses is lost to seeing the truth. How? Because being provoked involves the tasks of getting angry and then having to calm down. This person can have a lot of rancor which is a waist of time and energy as in their humanity they are carried along, swept along by life without any introspection, self knowledge. The results are there is little space for growth. A deeper reading of reality is missed. How? By their own rancor needing to argue and blame, their theories cannot be lived out by what they apparently think they know and choose to believe. This can create an unhappiness in their life situations they are unable to take responsibility for. Don’t rock my boat. My personal sense of insulation from change or “waking up.”

    This kind of rancor requires an immediate response and hatred can be. ferociously expressed, leading to a personally distorted reality. It causes a false reading of reality which enables fear, greed, envy and unrecognized oppression.

    I am not smart enough to see this by myself, digging it out from an old book written by a Rabbi and poorly translated, but it makes sense. Having read recently on Substack some very strange beliefs about Jews leading to a warped antisemitism and outright hate. My responses encouraging G-d’s love for all humankind and no returning blame fell on deaf ears. So I just had to block those individuals and walkway.

  • No one is abusing immigrants. We are purging ourselves of invaders, thieves, robbers, rapists, terrorists, freeloaders, and hostiles.

    We are not bullying the outcast, but we must call upon the lost to sin no more.

    We are not oppressing the poor, but we do not want our social services and resources being exploited by able-bodied people who are able to provide for themselves but won't.

  • Christian, whom do you serve? Jesus said you cannot serve two masters (Mt. 6:24).

    Are you serving men? Yes, we are called to do so in a proper manner, but our service to others is an extension of our service to God.

    Are you serving money? Being consumed by a desire for material wealth leads to grief (1 Tim. 6:9-10). God promises if we seek first His kingdom, He will provide our needs (Mt. 6:33), and with that, Paul teaches, we should be satisfied (1 Tim. 6:8).

    Are you serving self? This is the most difficult master from whom to separate. Yet Jesus exhorts that, in order to follow Him, one must deny himself (Lk. 9:23)

    It is Christ we are to serve (Col. 3:24), and God through Him. We are to be steadfast in this, abounding in the work of the Lord, not working as though for men, but for God (Col. 3:23). We have no excuse to do otherwise. God provided what we need to be fully equipped for every good work (2 Tim. 3:16). Let us by faith, therefore, set about the good works for which God called and saved us, which He prepared beforehand for us that we might walk in them (Eph. 2:10).

    "Ye serve the Lord Christ." Colossians 3:24

    To what choice order of officials was this word spoken? To kings who proudly boast a right divine? Ah, no! too often do they serve themselves or Satan, and forget the God whose sufferance permits them to wear their mimic majesty for their little hour. Speaks then the apostle to those so-called "right reverend fathers in God," the bishops, or "the venerable the archdeacons"? No, indeed, Paul knew nothing of these mere inventions of man. Not even to pastors and teachers, or to the wealthy and esteemed among believers, was this word spoken, but to servants, ay, and to slaves. Among the toiling multitudes, the journeymen, the day labourers, the domestic servants, the drudges of the kitchen, the apostle found, as we find still, some of the Lord's chosen, and to them he says, "Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ." This saying ennobles the weary routine of earthly employments, and sheds a halo around the most humble occupations. To wash feet may be servile, but to wash His feet is royal work. To unloose the shoe-latchet is poor employ, but to unloose the great Master's shoe is a princely privilege. The shop, the barn, the scullery, and the smithy become temples when men and women do all to the glory of God! Then "divine service" is not a thing of a few hours and a few places, but all life becomes holiness unto the Lord, and every place and thing, as consecrated as the tabernacle and its golden candlestick.

  • Brethren, the Lord is incredibly patient, far more so than we. For millennia, He has waited, watching as sinful men do sinful things, yet allowing them to carry on in this manner. Why?

    So that He may be gracious to His people, us, and those also who would repent and receive His salvation (Isa. 30:18).

    He is patient, not yet demonstrating His wrath nor making His full power known to those on whom His wrath will fall. Why? So that He may “make known the riches of His glory upon vessels of mercy, which He prepared beforehand for glory, even us, whom He also called, not from among Jews only, but also from among Gentiles” (Rom. 9:22-23).

    Many wonder, “why does He not yet return? For what purpose does He wait?” Beloved, are we the only ones to whom He has offered salvation? No, He has others, and He is patient, because He is not willing that they should perish, but that they too should come to repentance (2 Pet. 3:9).

    Let us rejoice, then, in His patience, knowing that His patience allowed for our salvation. At the appointed time, He will return for us, so look forward to, and be prepared for, His second appearance, especially now while we prepare to celebrate His first appearance which provided the means for our salvation. For we know not when He shall return, but we know that He will. Therefore, we must be patient, as is He.

    "Therefore will the Lord wait that He may be gracious unto you." Isaiah 30:18

    God often DELAYS IN ANSWERING PRAYER. We have several instances of this in sacred Scripture. Jacob did not get the blessing from the angel until near the dawn of day- he had to wrestle all night for it. The poor woman of Syrophoenicia was answered not a word for a long while. Paul besought the Lord thrice that "the thorn in the flesh" might be taken from him, and he received no assurance that it should be taken away, but instead thereof a promise that God's grace should be sufficient for him. If thou hast been knocking at the gate of mercy, and hast received no answer, shall I tell thee why the mighty Maker hath not opened the door and let thee in? Our Father has reasons peculiar to Himself for thus keeping us waiting. Sometimes it is to show His power and His sovereignty, that men may know that Jehovah has a right to give or to withhold. More frequently the delay is for our profit. Thou art perhaps kept waiting in order that thy desires may be more fervent.     Brethren, the Lord is incredibly patient, far more so than we. For millennia, He has waited, watching as sinful men do sinful things, yet allowing them to carry on in this manner. Why? So that He may be gracious to His people, us, and those also who would repent and receive His salvation (Isa. 30:18). He is patient, not yet demonstrating His wrath nor making His full power known to those on whom His wrath will fall. Why? So that He may “make known the riches of His glory upon vessels of mercy, which He prepared beforehand for glory, even us, whom He also called, not from among Jews only, but also from among Gentiles” (Rom. 9:22-23). Many wonder, “why does He not yet return? For what purpose does He wait?” Beloved, are we the only ones to whom He has offered salvation? No, He has others, and He is patient, because He is not willing that they should perish, but that they too should come to repentance (2 Pet. 3:9). Let us rejoice, then, in His patience, knowing that His patience allowed for our salvation. At the appointed time, He will return for us, so look forward to, and be prepared for, His second appearance, especially now while we prepare to celebrate His first appearance which provided the means for our salvation. For we know not when He shall return, but we know that He will. Isaiah 30:18 God often DELAYS IN ANSWERING PRAYER. We have several instances of this in sacred Scripture. Jacob did not get the blessing from the angel until near the dawn of day- he had to wrestle all night for it. The poor woman of Syrophoenicia was answered not a word for a long while. Paul besought the Lord thrice that "the thorn in the flesh" might be taken from him, and he received no assurance that it should be taken away, but instead thereof a promise that God's grace should be sufficient for him. If thou hast been knocking at the gate of mercy, and hast received no answer, shall I tell thee why the mighty Maker hath not opened the door and let thee in? Our Father has reasons peculiar to Himself for thus keeping us waiting. Sometimes it is to show His power and His sovereignty, that men may know that Jehovah has a right to give or to withhold. More frequently the delay is for our profit. Thou art perhaps kept waiting in order that thy desires may be more fervent.   • Christian, survey yourself. You call yourself “Christian,” which once was a pejorative, but now is a self-applied appellation of faith. How often do you consider the implications of having laid claim to this title?

    As Christians, we are called as His disciples not only to follow Christ and His teachings but also to reflect Christ Himself. For we were “predestined to become conformed to the image” of Christ (Rom. 8:29). According to Paul, we are as He is, for “as is the heavenly, so also are those who are heavenly (1 Cor. 15:48).

    Paul says this in a comparison of having been born in Adam to having been born in Christ (1 Cor. 15:47-48). We have been born in Christ, and therefore are “those who are heavenly.”

    What then, Christian? Do you live as if still of Adam? Are you “earthy” instead of “heavenly”? Or have you been crucified with Christ, and now allow Him to live through you, living this life in the flesh by faith in the Son of God who loved you and gave Himself up for you (Gal. 2:20)?

    Brethren, let us live as those worthy of the calling to which we have been called (Eph. 4:1), and be no longer conformed to this world, but transformed by the renewing of our minds (Rom. 12:2) that we may make known to this world the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Pet. 1:16).

    "As is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly." 1 Corinthians 15:48

    The head and members are of one nature, and not like that monstrous image which Nebuchadnezzar saw in his dream. The head was of fine gold, but the belly and thighs were of brass, the legs of iron, and the feet, part of iron and part of clay. Christ's mystical body is no absurd combination of opposites; the members were mortal, and therefore Jesus died; the glorified head is immortal, and therefore the body is immortal too, for thus the record stands, "Because I live, ye shall live also." As is our loving Head, such is the body, and every member in particular. A chosen Head and chosen members; an accepted Head, and accepted members; a living Head, and living members. If the head be pure gold, all the parts of the body are of pure gold also. Thus is there a double union of nature as a basis for the closest communion. Pause here, devout reader, and see if thou canst without ecstatic amazement, contemplate the infinite condescension of the Son of God in thus exalting thy wretchedness into blessed union with His glory. Thou art so mean that in remembrance of thy mortality, thou mayest say to corruption, "Thou art my father," and to the worm, "Thou art my sister"; and yet in Christ thou art so honoured that thou canst say to the Almighty, "Abba, Father," and to the Incarnate God, "Thou art my brother and my husband." Surely if relationships to ancient and noble families make men think highly of themselves, we have whereof to glory over the heads of them all. Let the poorest and most despised believer lay hold upon this privilege; let not a senseless indolence make him negligent to trace his pedigree, and let him suffer no foolish attachment to present vanities to occupy his thoughts to the exclusion of this glorious, this heavenly honour of union with Christ.
