1 Peter 2:2
...Like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the Word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation...
The analogy that the LORD makes through Peter in this verse is one that should be easily understood by those who are from the highest level of theological circles, to the layperson who has never read an extrabiblical resource in all his life. Newborn babies long for the milk that will satisfy their hunger and thirst. They long for milk because they need nourishment. They cannot, as newborns, ingest meat and potatoes. They cannot ingest raw vegetables and sophisticated carbohydrates. They need milk because it is the way their immature constitution is designed. God created them that way, so that, after they have matured for a while, they will be able to ingest those meat and potatoes. At some point, they will be able to ingest raw vegetables and sophisticated carbohydrates.
The same is true for the immature Christian. He or she should long for the pure milk of the Word of God. It is the only nourishment that will grow them spiritually. It is what will feed their hunger and thirst, the same as milk feeds the hunger and thirst of a newborn.
Many years ago, I attended a church that had little respect for the truth of God's Word. I could tell that the pastor spent little to no time in God's Word. He would sometimes get into the pulpit and read one passage of scripture, then spend the next 40 minutes or so giving his opinion about anything and everything going on in the world, the church and in people's personal lives. In my personal time, I was spending more time in God's Word and seeking out other pastors/teachers who were actually teaching the scriptures. Of course, the collision course between my spiritual growth and the lack of teaching in that church was bound to come to a head, and finally I could not stay there any more. Why? I could not stay there because like a newborn, I was hungry and thirsty for the milk, and eventually for the meat of God's Word. I got tired of going to church to hear the pastor's opinion. I wanted to hear what GOD had to say, and that pastor refused to deliver. Long and short is that I had to find a church where the Word of God was the central focus.
My experience aside, the Word of God will mature you if you allow it to do so. If you are in a church that is not focused on the Word, I suggest that you find another church. If you are in a church that focuses on the Word, thank God for it! Encourage and pray for your pastor, and let the LORD grow you!
