Matthew 16:18
And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
Peter has been accused of a lot of things: talking too much, being presumptuous, having a lot of nerve, speaking before thinking, etc. Those things may be true, but one thing that cannot be said of Peter, and that is that he did not love and serve his Savior. Peter knew Who Jesus was, while others seemed not to have as strong a conviction as Peter. Jesus asked the question: "...Who do you say that I am?" Peter's answer was short and to the point: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." This conviction is the foundation of the church. This is the "rock" upon which the church is built. The true church knows that Jesus is the Christ, the sacrificial Lamb at Calvary, Who bled and died for our sins in our place, and Whose resurrection from the dead defeated death, which would have taken all of us eventually. The true church knows that Jesus is the Son of God, the only begotten of the Father, Who was born from a virgin's womb due to a supernatural conception by the Holy Spirit. The true church also knows that one day, Jesus will descend into the clouds and take the believers up into the clouds with Him. Those who have died already will ascend, and those of us who are alive here on earth will follow. (I say "us" because I hope to be part of the rapture!) The true church looks forward to that day!
