Genesis 1:5

And God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

At the end of verse five, we have the end of the first day of creation.  God had separated light from darkness and called it the first day.  He was in His element; He was being God, calling everything that was not into being (Romans 4:17).  He made a distinct difference between light and darkness.  The light could never be consumed by darkness, but on the other hand, the darkness could be illuminated by the light.  God separated them, and they could never be joined together.  In Genesis 1:5, He gave them distinct names:  day and night.  In 2 Corinthians 6:14, He told Paul to make another distinction:  "Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?"  You have heard the metaphor, "as different as day and night"....that metaphor is perfect!  What else can we think of that is as different as day and night, or light and darkness?  God made the distinction on the first day of creation week and we would be wise to gain a better understanding of the difference, and the consequences of not knowing the difference.

God gave Paul specific instructions about what to do about those who walk in darkness.  Ephesians 5:8-11 says, "For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the LORD: walk as children of light:  (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)  Proving what is acceptable unto the LORD.  And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them."  The Father was clear, through the words of the apostle, that those who walk in the Light are not to co-sign those who walk in darkness. He called out the church at Ephesus, reminding them that they had been delivered from the darkness, and they were now walking in the Light.  They were now living in a manner that was acceptable to the LORD.  God's grace had produced newness of life in them (2 Corinthians 5:17).  Matthew Henry, in his commentary on Ephesians, says, "Now, being such, let your conversation be suitable to your condition and privileges, and accordingly live up to the obligation you are under by that knowledge and those advantages you enjoy..."  In other words, walk in the light!  Live holy...do what you know is right.  Live out Romans 12:1b-2, where Paul teaches the church at Rome to "...present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.  And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."

What does all of this have to do with Genesis 1:5?  It all has to do with the difference between light and darkness!!!  Jesus has given us the way out of darkness.  He died on the cross at Calvary to make that way for us.  We no longer have to be in bondage to sin and darkness.  We can now walk in the marvelous Light!  How so?  By placing our faith in the LORD Jesus Christ.  Trust that He is Who He says He is (Romans 10:9-13), which is Savior and LORD.  Ask Him to forgive your life of sin, and be the Master of your life.  Submit to Him, and obey His Word.  He will never leave you nor will He forsake you.  He will also require your soul one day...you will either die a physical death here on earth, at which time, if you have placed your faith in Him, your spirit will go to live with Him in paradise....or He will return in the clouds, in what we know as the rapture, and He will meet you in the clouds, where you will not experience a physical death, but you will be in His presence with all the other saints who have died physical deaths before you.  Either way Jesus decides to call on us, we do not want Him to do so without our having submitted our lives to Him.  We want Him to come back and find us walking in the LIGHT.
