Steven Aunan: If you read my recent piece on the “consent of the governed,” you should know that American propagandists perfected something called “the engineering of consent” all the way back in the 1920s. In 1929, American Tobacco consulted with the first psychoanalyst to practice in the U.S., and he said cigarettes should be called "torches of freedom" that "titillated the erogenous zones" of women. In six weeks, the social taboo on women smoking in public was utterly broken. Manipulation in the 2020s is the same manipulation of the 1920s, only better. Government has created "public private partnerships" with the most powerful tech and media companies in world history.
