Despite the best efforts of both his Democrat and Republican party enemies, as well as most of the news media and Big Tech platforms, political newcomer Donald Trump was barreling toward a popular election victory. On August 7, 2016, New York Times writer Jim Rutenberg wrote the quiet part out loud: the newspaper would no longer pretend to cover Trump objectively. In an article titled “Trump is Testing the Norms of Objectivity in Journalism,” Rutenberg announced that normal journalism ethical guidelines were being suspended to cover a candidate the newspaper said was uniquely dangerous. This signal from the newspaper copied around the world gave the green light to all media organizations to do the same—and they largely did.
