Have a goodness day all. Heart thoughts gleaned from the Psalms. The Psalms are greatly inspiring which makes them important as part of G-d’s Word. In ancient Israel Psalms were not only viewed as Scripture, but a foundation of worship. Psalms, as a book of worship is linked to the heart of G-d. Not just for inspiration; a defense from the adversary and the ways of evil people. If we keep these Words of Adonai in our hearts, we will be spiritually equipped to not fall from Grace. In Ps. 8 we read: “G-d made us but a little lower in the angels and crowned us with glory and honor.” When we see “protesters” acting so strange, beyond socially inappropriate, incorrigible, with violence, I can’t help but wonder, how did they miss this!! What the heck!! It saddens us to see fellow humans, fellow American’s behaving so nuts!! Communism (ie) socialism eliminates all forms of Faith, denying the very existence of G-d. So the glory of being created in G-d’s image is missed and all gross behavior, if it serves their ends is acceptable!! That’s the only explanation I can see for hatred of the US and this nations laws. Communist ideology is the idol and one of its root sources in the heart is envy - hatred of one’s neighbor. “Everybody has to suffer as I suffer.” I don’t have what you have so I suffer. All must be equally poor or equally blessed!

When God brought Israel out of Egypt, in the third month of their wanderings, He dictated to Moses those laws we now call the “Ten Commandments.” The fourth among them was to “remember the sabbath day” (Ex. 20:8). God expected on the seventh day of the week that the Israelites should rest, just as He had done on the day after the six days of creation (Ex. 20:11).

God knew, since He created man, that man could not work every day without respite. But in time, the Jewish leadership took this commandment much further than God had intended. As such, Jesus corrected them saying, “the Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath”(Mk. 2:27). The day was set apart for us, as we are to be for God.

What is often missed in considering the sabbath and its rest, especially by those now who still expect it to be observed according to the law, is that the seventh-day sabbath was merely a shadow of our true sabbath rest - our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

As Jesus preached to the masses, “come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest” (Mt. 11:28). True rest is found in Christ. As the author of Hebrews explains, “there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God” (Heb. 4:9). Looked at in context, this verse is about entering God’s true rest, entering His promised land, being found in Christ.

The truth sabbath is not a specific day of the week, or a special holy day - our True Sabbath is Jesus Himself, and we are to “fear if, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you may seem to have come short of it” (Heb. 4:1).

Brethren, always remember, “we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God” (Heb. 4:14), who also called Himself the “Lord…of the Sabbath” (Mk. 2:28). And our High Priest, Who Himself is Lord of the Sabbath, is indeed our great Sabbath rest.

How different will be the state of the believer in heaven from what it is here! Here he is born to toil and suffer weariness, but in the land of the immortal, fatigue is never known. Anxious to serve his Master, he finds his strength unequal to his zeal: his constant cry is, "Help me to serve Thee, O my God." If he be thoroughly active, he will have much labour; not too much for his will, but more than enough for his power, so that he will cry out, "I am not wearied of the labour, but I am wearied in it." Ah! Christian, the hot day of weariness lasts not for ever; the sun is nearing the horizon; it shall rise again with a brighter day than thou hast ever seen upon a land where they serve God day and night, and yet rest from their labours. Here, rest is but partial, there, it is perfect. Here, the Christian is always unsettled; he feels that he has not yet attained. There, all are at rest; they have attained the summit of the mountain; they have ascended to the bosom of their God. Higher they cannot go. Ah, toil-worn labourer, only think when thou shalt rest for ever! Canst thou conceive it? It is a rest eternal; "a rest that" remaineth. In the beginning, after God created the heavens and the earth, all was dark and He said, “let there be light,” and light shone in the darkness (Gen. 1:3; cf. Jn. 1:5). Seeing that the light was good, He separated the light from the darkness (Gen. 1:4).

From the very beginning, God separated that which He called “good” from that which He did not. Likewise, in the day of His coming, He will separate the sheep to His right and the goats to His left. To the sheep on His right He will say, “Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world” (Mt. 25:34). To the goats on His left He will say, “Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels” (Mt. 25:41).

Oh how blessed to be counted among His sheep! How wonderful to be ushered into His kingdom, a kingdom prepared for us “from the foundation of the world!” He knew us before time existed, and for us set a place at His table.

Take time today to give thanks and praise Him for His glorious mercy by which He has saved us. For we all like sheep had gone astray, but God caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Jesus (Isa. 53:6) so that, by Jesus bearing our sins on the cross, we would be returned to our Shepherd (1 Pet. 2:24-25).

Light might well be good since it sprang from that fiat of goodness, "Let there be light." We who enjoy it should be more grateful for it than we are, and see more of God in it and by it. Light physical is said by Solomon to be sweet, but gospel light is infinitely more precious, for it reveals eternal things, and ministers to our immortal natures. When the Holy Spirit gives us spiritual light, and opens our eyes to behold the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ, we behold sin in its true colours, and ourselves in our real position; we see the Most Holy God as He reveals Himself, the plan of mercy as He propounds it, and the world to come as the Word describes it. Spiritual light has many beams and prismatic colours, but whether they be knowledge, joy, holiness, or life, all are divinely good. If the light received be thus good, what must the essential light be, and how glorious must be the place where He reveals Himself. O Lord, since light is so good, give us more of it, and more of Thyself, the true light.

No sooner is there a good thing in the world, than a division is necessary. Light and darkness have no communion; God has divided them, let us not confound them. Sons of light must not have fellowship with deeds, doctrines, or deceits of darkness. The children of the day must be sober, honest, and bold in their Lord's work, leaving the works of darkness to those who shall dwell in it for ever. Our Churches should by discipline divide the light from the darkness, and we should by our distinct separation from the world do the same. In judgment, in action, in hearing, in teaching, in association, we must discern between the precious and the vile, and maintain the great distinction which the Lord made upon the world's first day. O Lord Jesus, be Thou our light throughout the whole of this day, for Thy light is the light of men.

Brethren, be strong, but realize our strength comes not from within. We can do all things, but we do them through Him who strengthens us (Phil. 4:13). God says, “I will strengthen you” (Isa. 41:10). Therefore, let us not fear, nor be anxious (Isa. 41:10).

At times we may feel weak, but this is when God’s strength is able to shine through. Paul explains this when he in his own weakness writes, “He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Cor. 12:9-10).

Let the power of God dwell in you (2 Cor. 12:9); let Christ live through you (Gal. 2:20). Be strong in the Lord and the power of His might (Eph. 6:10). Do not rely on your own strength, but humble yourself before God, and let Him exalt you when the time is right (1 Pet. 5:6).

"I will strengthen thee." Isaiah 41:10

God has a strong reserve with which to discharge this engagement; for He is able to do all things. Believer, till thou canst drain dry the ocean of omnipotence, till thou canst break into pieces the towering mountains of almighty strength, thou never needest to fear. Think not that the strength of man shall ever be able to overcome the power of God. Whilst the earth's huge pillars stand, thou hast enough reason to abide firm in thy faith. The same God who directs the earth in its orbit, who feeds the burning furnace of the sun, and trims the lamps of heaven, has promised to supply thee with daily strength. While He is able to uphold the universe, dream not that He will prove unable to fulfil His own promises. Remember what He did in the days of old, in the former generations. Remember how He spake and it was done; how He commanded, and it stood fast. Shall He that created the world grow weary? He hangeth the world upon nothing; shall He who doth this be unable to support His children? Shall He be unfaithful to His word for want of power? Who is it that restrains the tempest? Doth not He ride upon the wings of the wind, and make the clouds His chariots, and hold the ocean in the hollow of His hand? How can He fail thee? When He has put such a faithful promise as this on record, wilt thou for a moment indulge the thought that He has outpromised Himself, and gone beyond His power to fulfil? Ah, no! Thou canst doubt no longer.

O thou who art my God and my strength, I can believe that this promise shall be fulfilled, for the boundless reservoir of Thy grace can never be exhausted, and the overflowing storehouse of Thy strength can never be emptied by Thy friends or rifled by Thine enemies.

And make Jehovah's arm their song."

Dear brethren, consider how great a love our Heavenly Father has bestowed upon us, that we should be called “children of God” (1 Jn. 3:1). For, “In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself” (Eph. 1:4-5).

We would not know love if not for Him. After all, “we love, because He first loved us” (1 Jn. 4:19). We did not love Him first; we could not. As John wrote, “In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins” (1 Jn. 4:10).

If ever you question that love, remember Paul’s words similar to John’s: “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom. 5:8).

What a comforting and consoling message. Never forget that “neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8:38-39).

For God Himself says, “I have loved you with an everlasting love” (Jer. 31:3). We should marvel at this, because we have done nothing to earn that love.

Let us then love Him, and love one another, for if we do not love one another whom we can see, we cannot claim to love Him whom we cannot see (1 Jn. 4:20). “And this commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God should love his brother also” (1 Jn. 4:21).

Morning, December 20

"Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love." Jeremiah 31:3

Sometimes the Lord Jesus tells His Church His love thoughts. "He does not think it enough behind her back to tell it, but in her very presence He says, 'Thou art all fair, my love.' It is true, this is not His ordinary method; He is a wise lover, and knows when to keep back the intimation of love and when to let it out; but there are times when He will make no secret of it; times when He will put it beyond all dispute in the souls of His people" (R. Erskine's Sermons). The Holy Spirit is often pleased, in a most gracious manner, to witness with our spirits of the love of Jesus. He takes of the things of Christ and reveals them unto us. No voice is heard from the clouds, and no vision is seen in the night, but we have a testimony more sure than either of these. If an angel should fly from heaven and inform the saint personally of the Saviour's love to him, the evidence would not be one whit more satisfactory than that which is borne in the heart by the Holy Ghost. Ask those of the Lord's people who have lived the nearest to the gates of heaven, and they will tell you that they have had seasons when the love of Christ towards them has been a fact so clear and sure, that they could no more doubt it than they could question their own existence. Yes, beloved believer, you and I have had times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord, and then our faith has mounted to the topmost heights of assurance. We have had confidence to lean our heads upon the bosom of our Lord, and we have no more questioned our Master's affection to us than John did when in that blessed posture; nay, nor so much: for the dark question, "Lord, is it I that shall betray thee?" has been put far from us. He has kissed us with the kisses of His mouth, and killed our doubts by the closeness of His embrace. His love has been sweeter than wine to our souls.
