  • In the beginning, after God created the heavens and the earth, all was dark and He said, “let there be light,” and light shone in the darkness (Gen. 1:3; cf. Jn. 1:5). Seeing that the light was good, He separated the light from the darkness (Gen. 1:4).

    From the very beginning, God separated that which He called “good” from that which He did not. Likewise, in the day of His coming, He will separate the sheep to His right and the goats to His left. To the sheep on His right He will say, “Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world” (Mt. 25:34). To the goats on His left He will say, “Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels” (Mt. 25:41).

    Oh how blessed to be counted among His sheep! How wonderful to be ushered into His kingdom, a kingdom prepared for us “from the foundation of the world!” He knew us before time existed, and for us set a place at His table.

    Take time today to give thanks and praise Him for His glorious mercy by which He has saved us. For we all like sheep had gone astray, but God caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Jesus (Isa. 53:6) so that, by Jesus bearing our sins on the cross, we would be returned to our Shepherd (1 Pet. 2:24-25).

    "And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness." Genesis 1:4

    Light might well be good since it sprang from that fiat of goodness, "Let there be light." We who enjoy it should be more grateful for it than we are, and see more of God in it and by it. Light physical is said by Solomon to be sweet, but gospel light is infinitely more precious, for it reveals eternal things, and ministers to our immortal natures. When the Holy Spirit gives us spiritual light, and opens our eyes to behold the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ, we behold sin in its true colours, and ourselves in our real position; we see the Most Holy God as He reveals Himself, the plan of mercy as He propounds it, and the world to come as the Word describes it. Spiritual light has many beams and prismatic colours, but whether they be knowledge, joy, holiness, or life, all are divinely good. If the light received be thus good, what must the essential light be, and how glorious must be the place where He reveals Himself. O Lord, since light is so good, give us more of it, and more of Thyself, the true light.

    No sooner is there a good thing in the world, than a division is necessary. Light and darkness have no communion; God has divided them, let us not confound them. Sons of light must not have fellowship with deeds, doctrines, or deceits of darkness. The children of the day must be sober, honest, and bold in their Lord's work, leaving the works of darkness to those who shall dwell in it for ever. Our Churches should by discipline divide the light from the darkness, and we should by our distinct separation from the world do the same. In judgment, in action, in hearing, in teaching, in association, we must discern between the precious and the vile, and maintain the great distinction which the Lord made upon the world's first day. O Lord Jesus, be Thou our light throughout the whole of this day, for Thy light is the light of men.

  • Dear brethren, consider how great a love our Heavenly Father has bestowed upon us, that we should be called “children of God” (1 Jn. 3:1). For, “In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself” (Eph. 1:4-5).

    We would not know love if not for Him. After all, “we love, because He first loved us” (1 Jn. 4:19). We did not love Him first; we could not. As John wrote, “In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins” (1 Jn. 4:10).

    If ever you question that love, remember Paul’s words similar to John’s: “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom. 5:8).

    What a comforting and consoling message. Never forget that “neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8:38-39).

    For God Himself says, “I have loved you with an everlasting love” (Jer. 31:3). We should marvel at this, because we have done nothing to earn that love.

    Let us then love Him, and love one another, for if we do not love one another whom we can see, we cannot claim to love Him whom we cannot see (1 Jn. 4:20). “And this commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God should love his brother also” (1 Jn. 4:21).

    "Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love." Jeremiah 31:3

    Sometimes the Lord Jesus tells His Church His love thoughts. "He does not think it enough behind her back to tell it, but in her very presence He says, 'Thou art all fair, my love.' It is true, this is not His ordinary method; He is a wise lover, and knows when to keep back the intimation of love and when to let it out; but there are times when He will make no secret of it; times when He will put it beyond all dispute in the souls of His people" (R. Erskine's Sermons). The Holy Spirit is often pleased, in a most gracious manner, to witness with our spirits of the love of Jesus. He takes of the things of Christ and reveals them unto us. No voice is heard from the clouds, and no vision is seen in the night, but we have a testimony more sure than either of these. If an angel should fly from heaven and inform the saint personally of the Saviour's love to him, the evidence would not be one whit more satisfactory than that which is borne in the heart by the Holy Ghost. Ask those of the Lord's people who have lived the nearest to the gates of heaven, and they will tell you that they have had seasons when the love of Christ towards them has been a fact so clear and sure, that they could no more doubt it than they could question their own existence. Yes, beloved believer, you and I have had times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord, and then our faith has mounted to the topmost heights of assurance. We have had confidence to lean our heads upon the bosom of our Lord, and we have no more questioned our Master's affection to us than John did when in that blessed posture; nay, nor so much: for the dark question, "Lord, is it I that shall betray thee?" has been put far from us. He has kissed us with the kisses of His mouth, and killed our doubts by the closeness of His embrace. His love has been sweeter than wine to our souls.

    2 And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.

    4 And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:

    5 And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?

    40 And after that they durst not ask him any question at all.

    46 Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts;

    47 Which devour widows' houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.

    21 And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.

    22 But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:

    23 And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry:

    24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.

    25 Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing.

    26 And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant.

    27 And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound.

    28 And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him.

    29 And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends:

    30 But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf.

    31 And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.

    32 It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.

  • In Revelation, we read of four angels who hold back the winds, and to whom power has been given to harm both earth and sea. Yet they are told to wait until God’s people have been sealed (Rev. 7:1-3).

    At the appointed time, these angels are released not only to harm the earth and sea, but to kill one third of mankind (Rev. 9:14-15). Even after this, those remaining would not repent of their evil (Rev. 9:20-21).

    Zechariah foresaw this. In Zechariah chapter one, he is shown four horns which represented powers that had come against God’s people; after this, he records of his vision, “Then the LORD showed me four craftsmen” (Zech. 1:20). These “craftsmen” come to terrify and throw down the “horns” which had come against God’s people.

    Believer, how blessed are we to know Christ, to have repented and turned from our sin? Yet this is not our own doing, but His. God saved us, not on the basis of anything we had done, but according to His mercy (Tit. 3:5) which He offers to whom He pleases (Rom. 9:15). And He will preserve us for that day, just as is said in Revelation.

    Therefore, heed the words of Zechariah: Sing for joy and be glad! For the Lord is coming and will dwell in our midst! (Zech. 2:10).

    "And the Lord shewed me four carpenters." Zechariah 1:20

    In the vision described in this chapter, the prophet saw four terrible horns. They were pushing this way and that way, dashing down the strongest and the mightiest; and the prophet asked, "What are these?" The answer was, "These are the horns which have scattered Israel." He saw before him a representation of those powers which had oppressed the church of God. There were four horns; for the church is attacked from all quarters. Well might the prophet have felt dismayed; but on a sudden there appeared before him four carpenters. He asked, "What shall these do?" These are the men whom God hath found to break those horns in pieces. God will always find men for His work, and He will find them at the right time. The prophet did not see the carpenters first, when there was nothing to do, but first the "horns," and then the "carpenters." Moreover, the Lord finds enough men. He did not find three carpenters, but four"; there were four horns, and there must be four workmen. God finds the right men"; not four men with pens to write; not four architects to draw plans; but four carpenters to do rough work. Rest assured, you who tremble for the ark of God, that when the "horns" grow troublesome, the "carpenters" will be found. You need not fret concerning the weakness of the church of God at any moment; there may be growing up in obscurity the valiant reformer who will shake the nations: Chrysostoms may come forth from our Ragged Schools, and Augustines from the thickest darkness of London's poverty. The Lord knows where to find His servants. He hath in ambush a multitude of mighty men, and at His word they shall start up to the battle; "for the battle is the Lord's," and He shall get to Himself the victory. Let us abide faithful to Christ, and He, in the right time, will raise up for us a defence, whether it be in the day of our personal need, or in the season of peril to His Church.

  • Brethren, in His revelation to the apostle John, the Lord paints a picture of paradise with a river running through it, clear as crystal, by which grows the tree of life, and which is self flows with the water of life. Likewise, in Isaiah, the prophet relates that “the majestic One, the LORD, will be for us a place of rivers and wide canals” (Isa. 33:21).

    Believer, how beautiful this imagery is! Rivers provide the water necessary for life and growth. Often the Bible refers to those who trust in God as trees planted by a river (Ps. 1:3; Jer. 17:8). Such trees do fear neither heat nor drought. Such trees bear much fruit.

    Rivers may also provide protection. As Isaiah continues regarding the rivers and wide canals, he expounds that no boat nor ship will pass. They will not be used for commerce. They will not be used for bringing battle. No, these rivers and canals flow from the Lord, and “He will save us” (Isa. 33?22).

    What great news! Today, consider this wonderful news, and drink from those waters that your leaves may always be green, and that you may ever bear fruit for the Lord!

    Broad rivers and streams produce fertility, and abundance in the land. Places near broad rivers are remarkable for the variety of their plants and their plentiful harvests. God is all this to His Church. Having God she has abundance. What can she ask for that He will not give her? What want can she mention which He will not supply? "In this mountain shall the Lord of Hosts make unto all people a feast of fat things." Want ye the bread of life? It drops like manna from the sky. Want ye refreshing streams? The rock follows you, and that Rock is Christ. If you suffer any want it is your own fault; if you are straitened you are not straitened in Him, but in your own bowels. Broad rivers and streams also point to commerce. Our glorious Lord is to us a place of heavenly merchandize. Through our Redeemer we have commerce with the past; the wealth of Calvary, the treasures of the covenant, the riches of the ancient days of election, the stores of eternity, all come to us down the broad stream of our gracious Lord. We have commerce, too, with the future. What galleys, laden to the water's edge, come to us from the millennium! What visions we have of the days of heaven upon earth! Through our glorious Lord we have commerce with angels; communion with the bright spirits washed in blood, who sing before the throne; nay, better still, we have fellowship with the Infinite One.   • Christian, just as Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, He has similarly raised us. No, we have not yet died and been resurrected, but we were dead in our trespasses and sins when God made us alive together with Christ (Eph. 2:1,5).

    Later, several days before his last Passover, Jesus entered Lazarus’ house to dine with Lazarus and his sisters. While one sister served and the other anointed Jesus’ feet, Lazarus sat at the table and dined with Jesus (Jn. 12:2).

    Brethren, do you realize that Jesus wants the same from you? Do you believe you have all you require, that you are rich and in need of nothing as did those in Laodicea (Rev. 3:17)? Take honest stock of yourself. Come to Christ to purchase refined gold that you may be rich, and white robes that you may be clothed, and salve for your eyes that you may see (Rev. 3:18). For Jesus stands at the door knocking, waiting for you to hear his voice and open the door that He might come in and dine with you and you with Him (Rev. 3:20).

    Could there be a greater honor? A more blessed time? To sit with Jesus at the table and dine is reserved for those who are His. Do not be lukewarm (Rev. 3:16), and do not leave Jesus out in the cold. Open the door; dine with Him. Enjoy the blessing of sharing this blessed time with Him!

    "Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with Him." John 12:2

    He is to be envied. It was well to be Martha and serve, but better to be Lazarus and commune. There are times for each purpose, and each is comely in its season, but none of the trees of the garden yield such clusters as the vine of fellowship. To sit with Jesus, to hear His words, to mark His acts, and receive His smiles, was such a favour as must have made Lazarus as happy as the angels. When it has been our happy lot to feast with our Beloved in His banqueting-hall, we would not have given half a sigh for all the kingdoms of the world, if so much breath could have bought them.

    He is to be imitated. It would have been a strange thing if Lazarus had not been at the table where Jesus was, for he had been dead, and Jesus had raised him. For the risen one to be absent when the Lord who gave him life was at his house, would have been ungrateful indeed. We too were once dead, yea, and like Lazarus stinking in the grave of sin; Jesus raised us, and by His life we live- can we be content to live at a distance from Him? Do we omit to remember Him at His table, where He deigns to feast with His brethren? Oh, this is cruel! It behoves us to repent, and do as He has bidden us, for His least wish should be law to us. To have lived without constant intercourse with one of whom the Jews said, "Behold how He loved him," would have been disgraceful to Lazarus, is it excusable in us whom Jesus has loved with an everlasting love? To have been cold to Him who wept over his lifeless corpse, would have argued great brutishness in Lazarus. What does it argue in us over whom the Saviour has not only wept, but bled? Come, brethren, who read this portion, let us return unto our heavenly Bridegroom, and ask for His Spirit that we may be on terms of closer intimacy with Him, and henceforth sit at the table with Him.

  • Brethren, what is the aim of our lives? Is it not to please and glorify our Creator? Do not all things exist for His glory?

    He purchased you with His own blood (Acts 20:28), and He sealed you with His Holy Spirit (2 Cor. 1:22; Eph. 1:13, 4:30). Now you are a temple of God, and His Spirit dwells within you (1 Cor. 34:16).

    Our lives, therefore, should evince the change wrought in us, the holiness that flows from God’s temple. We are no longer to walk in futility of mind, for we are no longer darkened in our understanding of(Eph. 4:17-18). We are not to be callous, as are the unsaved, nor given over to sensuality (Eph. 4:19).

    We must lay aside falsehood, speaking honestly with one another (Eph. 4:25). Anger must not lead us to sin, nor shall we allow anger to fester in our hearts (Eph. 4:26). Such behaviors as these give Satan opportunity in our lives (Eph. 4:27). We must rise above. He who once stole must steal no longer, but work honestly for that which he receives (Eph. 4:28). And our speech is to be tempered, not unwholesome, edifying those around us (Eph. 4:29).

    Let us put away any bitterness or anger we harbor, as well as any slander or malice (Eph. 4:31), for these do not please God nor do they aid in our sanctification; instead, these quench His Holy Spirit who lives in us (1 Thes. 5:19).

    So, let us not grieve the Holy Spirit (Eph. 4:30), but “be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven” us (Eph. 4:31).

Moreover, as all blessings thus flow to you through the Holy Spirit, so also no good thing can come out of you in holy thought, devout worship, or gracious act, apart from the sanctifying operation of the same Spirit. Even if the good seed be sown in you, yet it lies dormant except He worketh in you to will and to do of His own good pleasure. Do you desire to speak for Jesus- how can you unless the Holy Ghost touch your tongue? Do you desire to pray? Alas! what dull work it is unless the Spirit maketh intercession for you! Do you desire to subdue sin? Would you be holy? Would you imitate your Master? Do you desire to rise to superlative heights of spirituality? Are you wanting to be made like the angels of God, full of zeal and ardour for the Master's cause? You cannot without the Spirit- "Without me ye can do nothing." O branch of the vine, thou canst have no fruit without the sap! O child of God, thou hast no life within thee apart from the life which God gives thee through His Spirit! Then let us not grieve Him or provoke Him to anger by our sin. Let us not quench Him in one of His faintest motions in our soul; let us foster every suggestion, and be ready to obey every prompting. If the Holy Spirit be indeed so mighty, let us attempt nothing without Him; let us begin no project, and carry on no enterprise, and conclude no transaction, without imploring His blessing. Then let us not grieve Him or provoke Him to anger by our sin. Let us not quench Him in one of His faintest motions in our soul; let us foster every suggestion, and be ready to obey every prompting. If the Holy Spirit be indeed so mighty, let us attempt nothing without Him; let us begin no project, and carry on no enterprise, and conclude no transaction, without imploring His blessing. Let us do Him the due homage of feeling our entire weakness apart from Him, and then depending alone upon Him, having this for our prayer, "Open Thou my heart and my whole being to Thine incoming, and uphold me with Thy free Spirit when I shall have received that Spirit in my inward parts."

    Our Father knows our need before we even ask (Mt. 6:8). So pray, pray continually, cry out to God for justice, and He will be there to provide it.

    If men ought always to pray and not to faint, much more Christian men. Jesus has sent His church into the world on the same errand upon which He Himself came, and this mission includes intercession. What if I say that the church is the world's priest? Creation is dumb, but the church is to find a mouth for it. It is the church's high privilege to pray with acceptance. The door of grace is always open for her petitions, and they never return empty-handed. The veil was rent for her, the blood was sprinkled upon the altar for her, God constantly invites her to ask what she wills. Will she refuse the privilege which angels might envy her? Is she not the bride of Christ? May she not go in unto her King at every hour? Shall she allow the precious privilege to be unused? The church always has need for prayer. There are always some in her midst who are declining, or falling into open sin. There are lambs to be prayed for, that they may be carried in Christ's bosom. The strong, lest they grow presumptuous; and the weak, lest they become despairing. If we kept up prayer-meetings four-and-twenty hours in the day, all the days in the year, we might never be without a special subject for supplication. Are we ever without the sick and the poor, the afflicted and the wavering? Are we ever without those who seek the conversion of relatives, the reclaiming of back-sliders, or the salvation of the depraved? Nay, with congregations constantly gathering, with ministers always preaching, with millions of sinners lying dead in trespasses and sins; in a country over which the darkness of Romanism is certainly descending; in a world full of idols, cruelties, devilries, if the church doth not pray, how shall she excuse her base neglect of the commission of her loving Lord? Let the church be constant in supplication, let every private believer cast his mite of prayer into the treasury.

Do you think that your heavenly Father, though He knoweth that you have need of food and raiment, will yet forget you? When not a sparrow falls to the ground without your Father, and the very hairs of your head are all numbered, will you mistrust and doubt Him? Perhaps your affliction will continue upon you till you dare to trust your God, and then it shall end. Full many there be who have been tried and sore vexed till at last they have been driven in sheer desperation to exercise faith in God, and the moment of their faith has been the instant of their deliverance; they have seen whether God would keep His promise or not. Oh, I pray you, doubt Him no longer! Please not Satan, and vex not yourself by indulging any more those hard thoughts of God. Think it not a light matter to doubt Jehovah. Remember, it is a sin"; and not a little sin either, but in the highest degree criminal. The angels never doubted Him, nor the devils either: we alone, out of all the beings that God has fashioned, dishonour Him by unbelief, and tarnish His honour by mistrust. Shame upon us for this! Our God does not deserve to be so basely suspected; in our past life we have proved Him to be true and faithful to His word, and with so many instances of His love and of His kindness as we have received, and are daily receiving, at His hands, it is base and inexcusable that we suffer a doubt to sojourn within our heart.   • Before His crucifixion, Jesus shared a last passover with His disciples. Prior to the meal’s beginning, those followers were yet unaware what would transpire that night. They knew only that he told them to go find a man carrying a pitcher of water, follow him to the house he entered, and ask the master of the house where the guest room was that Jesus’ might eat this meal with the apostles (Mk. 14:14).

    What an honor for the homeowner to host such an event! To have the Lord come personally into one’s house to partake of such an important feast.

    That eve was one gravity, but also one we celebrate and imitate. It was on that night that Jesus explained to His disciples that He was instituting a new covenant, one better than the old, signed and sealed with His own blood, as He taught when He passed the cup. It was then that He proclaimed the sacrifice of His own body on the cross as their redemption. It was at that table, that He instituted our practice of remembrance in eating the bread and drinking the cup.

    How blessed then the master of the house, for opening the door for the Lord to come in and dine. Many in the Church have shut Jesus out. Yet He stands at the door and knocks, that whosoever opens the door, He will come in and dine with Him (Rev. 3:20).

    Believer, are you listening? Do you hear His voice and the rapping of door knocker? Will you be like the homeowner and open the door that you might be blessed to have Him come in and dine with you?

    Jerusalem at the time of the passover was one great inn; each householder had invited his own friends, but no one had invited the Saviour, and He had no dwelling of His own. It was by His own supernatural power that He found Himself an upper room in which to keep the feast. It is so even to this day- Jesus is not received among the sons of men save only where by His supernatural power and grace He makes the heart anew. All doors are open enough to the prince of darkness, but Jesus must clear a way for Himself or lodge in the streets. It was through the mysterious power exerted by our Lord that the householder raised no question, but at once cheerfully and joyfully opened his guestchamber. Who he was, and what he was, we do not know, but he readily accepted the honour which the Redeemer proposed to confer upon him. In like manner it is still discovered who are the Lord's chosen, and who are not; for when the gospel comes to some, they fight against it, and will not have it, but where men receive it, welcoming it, this is a sure indication that there is a secret work going on in the soul, and that God has chosen them unto eternal life. Are you willing, dear reader, to receive Christ? Then there is no difficulty in the way; Christ will be your guest; His own power is working with you, making you willing. What an honour to entertain the Son of God! The heaven of heavens cannot contain Him, and yet He condescends to find a house within our hearts! We are not worthy that He should come under our roof, but what an unutterable privilege when He condescends to enter! For then He makes a feast, and causes us to feast with Him upon royal dainties, we sit at a banquet where the viands are immortal, and give immortality to those who feed thereon. Blessed among the sons of Adam is he who entertains the angels' Lord.

  • Believer, do you preach the gospel to the lost? If not, why not? Jesus told His disciples that, when the Holy Spirit came, He would give us power to be witnesses for Jesus (Acts 1:8).

    You have the power, and you have the command. For Jesus also said, “go therefore and make disciples of all nations” (Mt. 28:19). This was not directly merely to those in a leadership role of a 501(c)3 corporation. He did not say to invite unbelievers to your gatherings so that they might hear the good news. No! He charged each and every one of His followers with preaching the kingdom of God.

    You need no special skill. You need not speak eloquently. As a matter of fact, eloquence of speech may be a hindrance. For even Paul said to the Corinthians that he did not come with “superiority of speech” nor “of wisdom” (1 Cor. 2:1). Instead, he chose to “know nothing” other than “Jesus Christ, and Him crucified” so that their “faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God” (1 Cor. 2:2,5).

    And what is that power of God? The gospel itself! As Paul also explained, he was not “ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes” (Rom. 1:16).

    The gospel is simple and straightforward. Paul summarizes it thusly:
    “For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures” (1 Cor. 15:3-4). He goes on to explain how Jesus appeared to many, but the core of the message is simple and clear.

    So, what is holding you back? Are you ashamed? If that is the case, remember Jesus’ words: “whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels” (Mk. 8:38).

    With what God did for you through His Son, not only should we be unashamed, but bold. For “God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power” (2 Tim. 1:7). Pray for God to give you boldness in witnessing, as Paul asked the Ephesians to pray for him (Eph. 6:19). Then go, preach the gospel and make disciples!

    In order to learn how to discharge your duty as a witness for Christ, look at His example. He is always witnessing: by the well of Samaria, or in the Temple of Jerusalem: by the lake of Gennesaret, or on the mountain's brow. He is witnessing night and day; His mighty prayers are as vocal to God as His daily services. He witnesses under all circumstances; Scribes and Pharisees cannot shut His mouth; even before Pilate He witnesses a good confession. He witnesses so clearly, and distinctly that there is no mistake in Him. Christian, make your life a clear testimony. Be you as the brook wherein you may see every stone at the bottom- not as the muddy creek, of which you only see the surface- but clear and transparent, so that your heart's love to God and man may be visible to all. You need not say, "I am true:" be true. Boast not of integrity, but be upright. So shall your testimony be such that men cannot help seeing it. Never, for fear of feeble man, restrain your witness. Your lips have been warmed with a coal from off the altar; let them speak as like heaven-touched lips should do. "In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand." Watch not the clouds, consult not the wind- in season and out of season witness for the Saviour, and if it shall come to pass that for Christ's sake and the gospel's you shall endure suffering in any shape, shrink not, but rejoice in the honour thus conferred upon you, that you are counted worthy to suffer with your Lord; and joy also in this- that your sufferings, your losses, and persecutions shall make you a platform, from which the more vigorously and with greater power you shall witness for Christ Jesus. Study your great Exemplar, and be filled with His Spirit. Remember that you need much teaching, much upholding, much grace, and much humility, if your witnessing is to be to your Master's glory.

  • Christian, are you thankful? Truly thankful to God? This is part of our calling. We are to “give thanks to Him” and “bless His name” (Ps. 100:4).

    Our circumstances matter not. He has given us the breath of life, and more so, life eternal in Christ Jesus. How then can we not be thankful?

    When you are well, give thanks. When you have plenty, give thanks. When you are ill or imprisoned, give thanks. Hungry or in need? Give thanks! In the darkest of times, give thanks. Regardless our trials or tribulations, give thanks.

    I exaggerate not. Scripture exhorts, “in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thes. 5:18). This is not merely suggestion, it is God’s will. We are to be thankful always.

    If you are not giving thanks in all things, examine yourself. See what is within you that is preventing you showing your gratefulness to God. Then pray, with thanksgiving, letting God know what is on your heart, so that He might give you His peace which surpasses all understanding (Phil. 4:6-7).

    Remember always the words of the psalmist so that you will be ever thankful and bless His name:

    Bless the LORD, O my soul,
    And all that is within me, bless His holy name.
    Bless the LORD, O my soul,
    And forget none of His benefits;
    Who pardons all your iniquities,
    Who heals all your diseases;
    Who redeems your life from the pit,
    Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion;
    Who satisfies your years with good things,
    So that your youth is renewed like the eagle…
    He has not dealt with us according to our sins,
    Nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.
    For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
    So great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear Him.

    "Be thankful unto Him, and bless His name." Psalm 100:4

    Our Lord would have all His people rich in high and happy thoughts concerning His blessed person. Jesus is not content that His brethren should think meanly of Him; it is His pleasure that His espoused ones should be delighted with His beauty. We are not to regard Him as a bare necessary, like to bread and water, but as a luxurious delicacy, as a rare and ravishing delight. To this end He has revealed Himself as the "pearl of great price" in its peerless beauty, as the "bundle of myrrh" in its refreshing fragrance, as the "rose of Sharon" in its lasting perfume, as the "lily" in its spotless purity.

    As a help to high thoughts of Christ, remember the estimation that Christ is had in beyond the skies, where things are measured by the right standard. Think how God esteems the Only Begotten, His unspeakable gift to us. Consider what the angels think of Him, as they count it their highest honour to veil their faces at His feet. Consider what the blood-washed think of Him, as day without night they sing His well deserved praises. High thoughts of Christ will enable us to act consistently with our relations towards Him. The more loftily we see Christ enthroned, and the more lowly we are when bowing before the foot of the throne, the more truly shall we be prepared to act our part towards Him. Our Lord Jesus desires us to think well of Him, that we may submit cheerfully to His authority. High thoughts of Him increase our love. Love and esteem go together. Therefore, believer, think much of your Master's excellencies. Study Him in His primeval glory, before He took upon Himself your nature! Think of the mighty love which drew Him from His throne to die upon the cross! Admire Him as He conquers all the powers of hell! See Him risen, crowned, glorified! Bow before Him as the Wonderful, the Counsellor, the mighty God, for only thus will your love to Him be what it should.
    Christian, are you thankful? Truly thankful to God? This is part of our calling. We are to “give thanks to Him” and “bless His name” (Ps. 100:4). Our circumstances matter not. He has given us the breath of life, and more so, life eternal in Christ Jesus. How then can we not be thankful? When you are well, give thanks. When you have plenty, give thanks. When you are ill or imprisoned, give thanks. Hungry or in need? Give thanks! In the darkest of times, give thanks. Regardless our trials or tribulations, give thanks. I exaggerate not. Scripture exhorts, “in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thes. 5:18). This is not merely suggestion, it is God’s will. We are to be thankful always. If you are not giving thanks in all things, examine yourself. See what is within you that is preventing you showing your gratefulness to God. Then pray, with thanksgiving, letting God know what is on your heart, so that He might give you His peace which surpasses all understanding (Phil. 4:6-7). Remember always the words of the psalmist so that you will be ever thankful and bless His name: Bless the LORD, O my soul, And all that is within me, bless His holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget none of His benefits; Who pardons all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases; Who redeems your life from the pit, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion; Who satisfies your years with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle… He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. As a help to high thoughts of Christ, remember the estimation that Christ is had in beyond the skies, where things are measured by the right standard. Consider what the blood-washed think of Him, as day without night they sing His well deserved praises. High thoughts of Christ will enable us to act consistently with our relations towards Him. The more loftily we see Christ enthroned, and the more lowly we are when bowing before the foot of the throne, the more truly shall we be prepared to act our part towards Him. Our Lord Jesus desires us to think well of Him, that we may submit cheerfully to His authority. High thoughts of Him increase our love. Love and esteem go together. Therefore, believer, think much of your Master's excellencies. Study Him in His primeval glory, before He took upon Himself your nature!   • Brethren, praise is not simply something we are called to do, it is an attitude we should have ever and always. God tells us more than once that “every knee shall bow to [Him], and every tongue shall give praise to God” (Rom. 14:11).

    Do you only praise Him when you feel blessed? When you have received something for which you prayed? Why?

    This should not be. Instead, like Job we should say, “The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD” (Job. 1:21). When Job said this, he had just been informed that all his donkeys, oxen, and camels had been stolen, his sheep burned by fire from heaven, his servants attending all of them slain, and lastly, all his children were killed by a house falling on them. Would you, in such a situation, offer up praise to God?

    Praise isn’t just a matter of thanking God for accommodating our desires. We are, through Christ, to “continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God” (Heb. 13:15). We are to give thanks in everything, all circumstances, for this is God’s will for us in Christ Jesus (1 Thes. 5:18). Praise is an attitude of the heart.

    Whether we have much in worldly wealth or little, whether we are enjoying times of ease or enduring suffering, we are to give praise to God. This is why James tells us to count it all joy when we encounter trials of various kinds (Jas. 1:2-4). This is why Paul, jailed and in chains, sang hymns of praise to God rather than griping and complaining (Acts 16:25).

    Regardless our circumstance, we have reason to be eternally grateful to God; for He has given us life through Christ Jesus His Son. Therefore, let us say always with the psalmist, “I will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart; I will tell of all Your wonders. I will be glad and exult in You; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High” (Ps. 9:1-2).

    Praise should always follow answered prayer; as the mist of earth's gratitude rises when the sun of heaven's love warms the ground. Hath the Lord been gracious to thee, and inclined His ear to the voice of thy supplication? Then praise Him as long as thou livest. Let the ripe fruit drop upon the fertile soil from which it drew its life. Deny not a song to Him who hath answered thy prayer and given thee the desire of thy heart. To be silent over God's mercies is to incur the guilt of ingratitude; it is to act as basely as the nine lepers, who after they had been cured of their leprosy, returned not to give thanks unto the healing Lord. To forget to praise God is to refuse to benefit ourselves; for praise, like prayer, is one great means of promoting the growth of the spiritual life. It helps to remove our burdens, to excite our hope, to increase our faith. It is a healthful and invigorating exercise which quickens the pulse of the believer, and nerves him for fresh enterprises in his Master's service. To bless God for mercies received is also the way to benefit our fellow-men; "the humble shall hear thereof and be glad." Others who have been in like circumstances shall take comfort if we can say, "Oh! magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together; this poor man cried, and the Lord heard him."   • Scripture informs us of our Lord’s life in the flesh that He had “no stately form or majesty that we should look upon Him, nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him (Isa. 53:2). There was nothing particularly attractive about Him physically. There was no worldly reason for people to be drawn to Him. Yet Solomon, in allegorical fashion, describes Him as having a head of pure gold and flowing locks, black like a raven (Song of Solomon 511).

    No, he was not beautiful by earthly standards, yet he was and is more valuable than pure gold. Is anyone more valuable than our Lord? May it never be!

    Likewise, Solomon paints a picture of an incomparable crown of hair, in ways harkening to that which gave Samson his strength. Though we read nought of the Jesus’ earthly strength, et does anyone’s might compare His? Or does anyone deserve so great a crown as Christ Himself? Never shall it be so!

    Though our Lord came in humility, appearing in the likeness of sinful human flesh (Rom. 8:3; Phil. 2:5-8), that flesh masked the glory which He had with the father before the world was created (Jn. 17:5).

    Three of Lord’s apostles (Peter, James, and John) were blessed to see even a hint of this glory when they went up the mountain with Jesus (Mt. 17:1-2). Just imagine the day when we will see His glory in its fullness and be glorified along with Him (Rom. 8:17)!

    While we await that day, let us continue to look to Him now, to see in what limited fashion we may (1 Cor. 3:12) the glory He allows, and to live in such a way as to show that we seek to enter into that glory with Him.

    Comparisons all fail to set forth the Lord Jesus, but the spouse uses the best within her reach. By the head of Jesus we may understand His deity, "for the head of Christ is God" and then the ingot of purest gold is the best conceivable metaphor, but all too poor to describe one so precious, so pure, so dear, so glorious. Jesus is not a grain of gold, but a vast globe of it, a priceless mass of treasure such as earth and heaven cannot excel. The creatures are mere iron and clay, they all shall perish like wood, hay, and stubble, but the everliving Head of the creation of God shall shine on for ever and ever. In Him is no mixture, nor smallest taint of alloy. He is for ever infinitely holy and altogether divine. The bushy locks depict His manly vigour. There is nothing effeminate in our Beloved. He is the manliest of men. Bold as a lion, laborious as an ox, swift as an eagle. Every conceivable and inconceivable beauty is to be found in Him, though once He was despised and rejected of men.

  • Beloved brethren, before we were called, we were “all as an unclean thing” (Isa.64.6). Isaiah uses an even more graphic description even for our “righteous” deeds, which are not righteous at all before we are created anew.

    But thanks be to God, we have received the new birth! Having been born first of flesh, we have now been born of the Spirit (Jn. 3:6), and we are now new creatures (2 Cor. 5:17).

    How beautiful the gift we’ve been given that, though we were, by nature, children of wrath, walking according to the ways of this world, indulging our flesh (Eph. 2:1-3), God in His mercy and His love for us saved us, while we were yet dead in sin, made us alive together with Christ (Eph. 2:4-5).

    While we yet wrestle with temptation, we now have the power instead to obey God, to live not as slaves to sin, but as servants of righteousness (Rom. 6:17-18).

    Let us be humbled by this grace shown us, and let us rejoice in Christ who sets us free from the body of this death! (Rom. 7:24).

    The believer is a new creature, he belongs to a holy generation and a peculiar people- the Spirit of God is in him, and in all respects he is far removed from the natural man; but for all that the Christian is a sinner still. He is so from the imperfection of his nature, and will continue so to the end of his earthly life. The black fingers of sin leave smuts upon our fairest robes. Sin mars our repentance, ere the great Potter has finished it, upon the wheel. Selfishness defiles our tears, and unbelief tampers with our faith. The best thing we ever did apart from the merit of Jesus only swelled the number of our sins; for when we have been most pure in our own sight, yet, like the heavens, we are not pure in God's sight; and as He charged His angels with folly, much more must He charge us with it, even in our most angelic frames of mind. The song which thrills to heaven, and seeks to emulate seraphic strains, hath human discords in it. The prayer which moves the arm of God is still a bruised and battered prayer, and only moves that arm because the sinless One, the great Mediator, has stepped in to take away the sin of our supplication. The most golden faith or the purest degree of sanctification to which a Christian ever attained on earth, has still so much alloy in it as to be only worthy of the flames, in itself considered. Every night we look in the glass we see a sinner, and had need confess, "We are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags." Oh, how precious the blood of Christ to such hearts as ours! How priceless a gift is His perfect righteousness! And how bright the hope of perfect holiness hereafter! Even now, though sin dwells in us, its power is broken. It has no dominion; it is a broken-backed snake; we are in bitter conflict with it, but it is with a vanquished foe that we have to deal. Yet a little while and we shall enter victoriously into the city where nothing defileth.
