• We read often of Jesus leaving the crowds, of seeking solitude, and at times it happened. But how often did He move on, yet throngs followed behind?

    When He got into a boat with His disciples, leaving a crowd to cross the sea, other boats followed and went with Him. People followed wherever He went. It wasn't because He was attractive in any way, for Scripture tells us, "He has no stately form or majesty that we should look upon Him, nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him" (Isa. 53:2).

    People often followed because of His miracles, though some because of His teaching. As His closest disciples said, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life. We have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God" (Jn. 6:68-69).

    Brethren, why are you following Jesus? Is it because you are seeking His miracles, what He can do for you? Or do you follow because of who He is, and because of what He has done for you?

    No miracle can compare to that of being made a new creation in Him (2 Cor. 5:17). No sign can ever do more for you than God replacing your heart of stone with a heart of flesh (Ezek. 36:26) and His granting His Spirit to live within us (Ezek. 36:27; 1 Cor. 2:12; 1 Cor. 3:16).

    When we are with Him, as the disciples were in the boat, and as were those who followed in other boats, He will calm our storms (Mk. 4:37-39) and give us peace (Isa. 26:3), a peace that surpasses all understanding (Phil. 4:6-7).

    Follow Him, believer, and do so for who He is - the way, the truth, and the life (Jn. 14:6), and know that we will reach our final destination unscathed with Him (Jn. 5:24).

    Spurgeon's Morning and Evening Devotions

    Morning, September 14

    "There were also with Him other little ships." Mark 4:36

    Jesus was the Lord High Admiral of the sea that night, and His presence preserved the whole convoy. It is well to sail with Jesus, even though it be in a little ship. When we sail in Christ's company, we may not make sure of fair weather, for great storms may toss the vessel which carries the Lord Himself, and we must not expect to find the sea less boisterous around our little boat. If we go with Jesus we must be content to fare as He fares; and when the waves are rough to Him, they will be rough to us. It is by tempest and tossing that we shall come to land, as He did before us. When the storm swept over Galilee's dark lake all faces gathered blackness, and all hearts dreaded shipwreck.

    When all creature help was useless, the slumbering Saviour arose, and with a word, transformed the riot of the tempest into the deep quiet of a calm; then were the little vessels at rest as well as that which carried the Lord. Jesus is the star of the sea; and though there be sorrow upon the sea, when Jesus is on it there is joy too. May our hearts make Jesus their anchor, their rudder, their lighthouse, their life-boat, and their harbour. His Church is the Admiral's flagship, let us attend her movements, and cheer her officers with our presence. He Himself is the great attraction; let us follow ever in His wake, mark His signals, steer by His chart, and never fear while He is within hail. Not one ship in the convoy shall suffer wreck; the great Commodore will steer every barque in safety to the desired haven. By faith we will slip our cable for another day's cruise, and sail forth with Jesus into a sea of tribulation. Winds and waves will not spare us, but they all obey Him; and, therefore, whatever squalls may occur without, faith shall feel a blessed calm within. He is ever in the centre of the weather-beaten company: let us rejoice in Him. His vessel has reached the haven, and so shall ours.

  • Brethren, is God's strength in you? Do you say with Paul, "I can do all things through Him who strengthens me" (Phil. 4:13)? Or are you fearful and anxious, despite God telling you, "do not fear, for I am with you; do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. surely I will help you, surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand" (Isa. 41:10)?

    When we rely on, and rest in, God for our strength, we are like springs, or clouds bringing rain, in a barren and desolate place.

    Do not be moved by your circumstances. For "the Lord will give strength to His people" (Ps. 29:11). He has so promised, and He does not lie (Num. 4:29).

    Let us, therefore, be as the cedars of Lebanon planted by God (Ps. 104:16), not easily swayed, but standing tall and powerful in the strength of the Lord, that we may show forth His greatness and glory, and "fill the wells" (Ps. 84:6) that others might find refreshment.

    Spurgeon's Morning and Evening Devotions

    Morning, September 13

    "Who passing through the valley of Baca make it a well, the rain also filleth the pools." Psalm 84:6

    This teaches us that the comfort obtained by a one may often prove serviceable to another; just as wells would be used by the company who came after. We read some book full of consolation, which is like Jonathan's rod, dropping with honey. Ah! we think our brother has been here before us, and digged this well for us as well as for himself. Many a "Night of Weeping," "Midnight Harmonies," an "Eternal Day," "A Crook in the Lot," a "Comfort for Mourners," has been a well digged by a pilgrim for himself, but has proved quite as useful to others. Specially we notice this in the Psalms, such as that beginning, "Why art thou cast down, O my soul?" Travellers have been delighted to see the footprint of man on a barren shore, and we love to see the waymarks of pilgrims while passing through the vale of tears.

    The pilgrims dig the well, but, strange enough, it fills from the top instead of the bottom. We use the means, but the blessing does not spring from the means. We dig a well, but heaven fills it with rain. The horse is prepared against the day of battle, but safety is of the Lord. The means are connected with the end, but they do not of themselves produce it. See here the rain fills the pools, so that the wells become useful as reservoirs for the water; labour is not lost, but yet it does not supersede divine help.

    Grace may well be compared to rain for its purity, for its refreshing and vivifying influence, for its coming alone from above, and for the sovereignty with which it is given or withheld. May our readers have showers of blessing, and may the wells they have digged be filled with water! Oh, what are means and ordinances without the smile of heaven! They are as clouds without rain, and pools without water. O God of love, open the windows of heaven and pour us out a blessing!

  • Oh, Christian, what a marvelous thought to know that, while here, we have the mind of Christ (1 Cor. 2:16) to know the will of the Lord, and that hereafter, He will receive us into His glory.

    Is there anything more comforting than knowing we can rely on the counsel of God (His revealed word) to help us through our daily lives? Shall we not find joy in our eternal destination?

    Then let us live not as citizens of this world, but as strangers in a strange land, wanderers whose citizenship is in heaven above, and reflect His glory for all to see!
    ----------

    Spurgeon's Morning and Evening Devotions

    Morning, September 1

    "Thou shalt guide me with Thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory." Psalm 73:24

    The Psalmist felt his need of divine guidance. He had justbeen discovering the foolishness of his own heart, and lest he should be constantly led astray by it, he resolved that God's counsel should henceforth guide him. A sense of our own folly is a great step towards being wise, when it leads us to rely on the wisdom of the Lord. The blind man leans on his friend's arm and reaches home in safety, and so would we give ourselves up implicitly to divine guidance, nothing doubting; assured that though we cannot see, it is always safe to trust the All-seeing God. "Thou shalt", is a blessed expression of confidence. He was sure that the Lord would not decline the condescending task. There is a word for thee, O believer; rest thou in it. Be assured that thy God will be thy counsellor and friend; He shall guide thee; He will direct all thy ways. In His written Word thou hast this assurance in part fulfilled, for holy Scripture is His counsel to thee. Happy are we to have God's Word always to guide us! What were the mariner without his compass? And what were the Christian without the Bible? This is the unerring chart, the map in which every shoal is described, and all the channels from the quicksands of destruction to the haven of salvation mapped and marked by one who knows all the way. Blessed be Thou, O God, that we may trust Thee to guide us now, and guide us even to the end! After this guidance through life, the Psalmist anticipates a divine reception at last- "and afterward receive me to glory." What a thought for thee, believer! God Himself will receive thee to glory- thee! Wandering, erring, straying, yet He will bring thee safe at last to glory! This is thy portion; live on it this day, and if perplexities should surround thee, go in the strength of this text straight to the throne.

  • Oh the glories of God's salvation. That His covenant depends not upon us, but upon Him and His promise, which He will always remember, is true blessedness.
    -----------

    Spurgeon's Morning and Evening Devotions

    Evening, August 13

    "And I will remember My covenant." Genesis 9:15

    Mark the form of the promise. God does not say, "And when ye shall look upon the bow, and ye shall remember My covenant, then I will not destroy the earth," but it is gloriously put, not upon our memory, which is fickle and frail, but upon God's memory, which is infinite and immutable. "The bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant." Oh! it is not my remembering God, it is God's remembering me which is the ground of my safety; it is not my laying hold of His covenant, but His covenant's laying hold on me. Glory be to God! the whole of the bulwarks of salvation are secured by divine power, and even the minor towers, which we may imagine might have been left to man, are guarded by almighty strength. Even the remembrance of the covenant is not left to our memories, for we might forget, but our Lord cannot forget the saints whom He has graven on the palms of His hands. It is with us as with Israel in Egypt; the blood was upon the lintel and the two side-posts, but the Lord did not say, "When you see the blood I will pass over you," but "When I see the blood I will pass over you." My looking to Jesus brings me joy and peace, but it is God's looking to Jesus which secures my salvation and that of all His elect, since it is impossible for our God to look at Christ, our bleeding Surety, and then to be angry with us for sins already punished in Him. No, it is not left with us even to be saved by remembering the covenant. There is no linsey-wolsey here- not a single thread of the creature mars the fabric. It is not of man, neither by man, but of the Lord alone. We should remember the covenant, and we shall do it, through divine grace; but the hinge of our safety does not hang there- it is God's remembering us, not our remembering Him"; and hence the covenant is an everlasting covenant.

  • Job
    Chapter 11

    1 Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said,

    2 Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified?

    3 Should thy lies make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man make thee ashamed?

    4 For thou hast said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in thine eyes.

    5 But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee;

    6 And that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to that which is! Know therefore that God exacteth of thee less than thine iniquity deserveth.

    7 Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?

    8 It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know?

    9 The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.

    10 If he cut off, and shut up, or gather together, then who can hinder him?

    11 For he knoweth vain men: he seeth wickedness also; will he not then consider it?

    12 For vain man would be wise, though man be born like a wild ass's colt.

    13 If thou prepare thine heart, and stretch out thine hands toward him;

    14 If iniquity be in thine hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles.

    15 For then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot; yea, thou shalt be stedfast, and shalt not fear:

    16 Because thou shalt forget thy misery, and remember it as waters that pass away:

    17 And thine age shall be clearer than the noonday; thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning.

    18 And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig about thee, and thou shalt take thy rest in safety.

    19 Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall make thee afraid; yea, many shall make suit unto thee.

    20 But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and they shall not escape, and their hope shall be as the giving up of the ghost.
    Job Chapter 11 1 Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said, 2 Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified? 3 Should thy lies make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man make thee ashamed? 4 For thou hast said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in thine eyes. 5 But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee; 6 And that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to that which is! 13 If thou prepare thine heart, and stretch out thine hands toward him; 14 If iniquity be in thine hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles. 15 For then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot; yea, thou shalt be stedfast, and shalt not fear: 16 Because thou shalt forget thy misery, and remember it as waters that pass away: 17 And thine age shall be clearer than the noonday; thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning.

  • Job
    Chapter 3

    1 After this opened Job his mouth, and cursed his day.

    2 And Job spake, and said,

    3 Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said, There is a man child conceived.

    4 Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above, neither let the light shine upon it.

    5 Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.

    6 As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year, let it not come into the number of the months.

    7 Lo, let that night be solitary, let no joyful voice come therein.

    8 Let them curse it that curse the day, who are ready to raise up their mourning.

    9 Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark; let it look for light, but have none; neither let it see the dawning of the day:

    10 Because it shut not up the doors of my mother's womb, nor hid sorrow from mine eyes.

    11 Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly?

    12 Why did the knees prevent me? or why the breasts that I should suck?

    13 For now should I have lain still and been quiet, I should have slept: then had I been at rest,

    14 With kings and counsellors of the earth, which built desolate places for themselves;

    15 Or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver:

    16 Or as an hidden untimely birth I had not been; as infants which never saw light.

    17 There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary be at rest.

    18 There the prisoners rest together; they hear not the voice of the oppressor.

    19 The small and great are there; and the servant is free from his master.

    20 Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul;

    21 Which long for death, but it cometh not; and dig for it more than for hid treasures;

    22 Which rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave?

    23 Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in?

    24 For my sighing cometh before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like the waters.

    25 For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.

    26 I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet; yet trouble came.

  • I believe we lost it not to long after 9/11. When 9/11 happened, it seemed like many people came together in prayer, for each other and the Country. God says in HIS Word to pray for our land, have we.... Removing GOD and prayer from everywhere, sure didn't help much. Small bites at a time, the demons played the people like a fiddle. They still do. As you stated, people need to grow a pair.

  • For anyone who thinks the NFA was ever about anything other than tax and control (not safety), directly from the ATF's own website:

    "While the NFA was enacted by Congress as an exercise of its authority to tax, the NFA had an underlying purpose unrelated to revenue collection. As the legislative history of the law discloses, its underlying purpose was to curtail, if not prohibit, transactions in NFA firearms. Congress found these firearms to pose a significant crime problem because of their frequent use in crime, particularly the gangland crimes of that era such as the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. The $200 making and transfer taxes on most NFA firearms were considered quite severe and adequate to carry out Congress’ purpose to discourage or eliminate transactions in these firearms. The $200 tax has not changed since 1934." - https://atf.gov/rules-and-regulations/laws-alcohol-tobacco-firearms-and-explosives/national-firearms-act

    As for the "underlying purpose," yes, it was an attempt at prohibition, just like the prohibition of alcohol. It was NOT about safety, nor, as is stated there, about "crime," because in 1934, during the great depression, when the NFA was enacted, the only people who could afford a $200 tax stamp were the criminals the law was allegedly aimed at stopping. No, just as with government today, this was not about safety or crime - it was about control (making firearms and accessories too expensive for most to purchase) and government getting its cut.

    National Firearms Act | Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives
    The NFA was originally enacted in 1934. Similar to the current NFA, the original Act imposed a tax on the making and transfer of firearms defined by the Act, as well as a special (occupational) tax on persons and entities engaged in the business of importing, manufacturing, and dealing in NFA firearms. The law also required the registration of all NFA firearms with the

Only 28.8% were fully vaccinated for shingles. Keep in mind this non-randomized study design overestimates vaccine efficacy due to a variety of biases. The overall rate of shingles was low at 2.3% over 4 years or .58% per year."
