• I experienced the Great American Eclipse under some clouds that rolled in, as is typical for astronomical events, during the moment of maximum eclipse. The birds stopped singing except for one squawking bird in a tall tree, the squirrels went home, the color of the ambient light changed from orange to blue as it would in the evening, the shadows on the ground became softer, the wind speed increased and the temperature cooled. It was eerily quiet for a few minutes before the normal activity returned with the unveiled sunlight; several sunspots were visible during this April 8th solar eclipse.

  • A pairing of a waning gibbous Moon and Jupiter with its four Galilean moons visible tonight dances in the sky after the Harvest Supermoon. Uranus and the Pleiades (M45) in the constellation Taurus follow in the glare of our Moon that is illuminating the zenith on its way to setting in the western sky at sunrise.

  • The third supermoon of 2023, and the Moon's closest approach to Earth this year, is in the sky with Saturn and Neptune for a second night as the calendar changes to the month of September. To the right of Saturn are the globular clusters M15, M2 and M30 in a vertical line across the constellation Aquarius, and Jupiter and Uranus are trailing the Moon. September 28-29 will be the fourth and final supermoon of 2023. #BlueMoonSupermoon #BlueMoon #BlueSupermoon #Supermoon2023 #Supermoon #Moon #Perigee #Astronomy

  • The second supermoon of 2023 is in the sky tonight with Pluto, Saturn, and Neptune, setting above the constellation Sagittarius. The bright globular clusters M2 and M15 should be visible, above the glare of the Moon and to the right of Saturn, near the constellation Aquarius. The third and closest supermoon for this year is coming on August 30.
