  • Believer, do you thirst? For what do you thirst?

    Jesus promised to give us living water, and that this living water would become a spring of eternal life in us that we might never go thirsty again (Jn. 4:10-14).

    If you thirst, you need only seek out Lord, as He commanded (Jn. 7:37).

    Are you communing with Him and drinking of the living water he so graciously offers? Off you are not spending time in His word and in prayer, then surely you will end up parched.

    There is no need to go thirsty, beloved brethren. He is a well from which we have only to draw that living water. Come to Him that your thirst would be quenched and your spirit filled to overflowing.

    "Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst." John 4:14

    He who is a believer in Jesus finds enough in his Lord to satisfy him now, and to content him for evermore. The believer is not the man whose days are weary for want of comfort, and whose nights are long from absence of heart-cheering thought, for he finds in religion such a spring of joy, such a fountain of consolation, that he is content and happy. Put him in a dungeon and he will find good company; place him in a barren wilderness, he will eat the bread of heaven; drive him away from friendship, he will meet the "friend that sticketh closer than a brother." Blast all his gourds, and he will find shadow beneath the Rock of Ages; sap the foundation of his earthly hopes, but his heart will still be fixed, trusting in the Lord. The heart is as insatiable as the grave till Jesus enters it, and then it is a cup full to overflowing. There is such a fulness in Christ that He alone is the believer's all. The true saint is so completely satisfied with the all-sufficiency of Jesus that he thirsts no more- except it be for deeper draughts of the living fountain. In that sweet manner, believer, shalt thou thirst; it shall not be a thirst of pain, but of loving desire; thou wilt find it a sweet thing to be panting after a fuller enjoyment of Jesus' love. One in days of yore said, "I have been sinking my bucket down into the well full often, but now my thirst after Jesus has become so insatiable, that I long to put the well itself to my lips, and drink right on." Is this the feeling of thine heart now, believer? Dost thou feel that all thy desires are satisfied in Jesus, and that thou hast no want now, but to know more of Him, and to have closer fellowship with Him? Then come continually to the fountain, and take of the water of life freely. Jesus will never think you take too much, but will ever welcome you, saying, "Drink, yea, drink abundantly, O beloved."

  • Christian, are you weary? Is your strength lacking? Are you dejected regarding your service to God?

    Elijah felt the same, even asking the Lord to take his life.

    Believer, we need not feel this way. Let us eat and drink that we might have strength for the journey. Remember, however, that “man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD” (Deut. 8:3; cf. Mt. 4:4).

    While food may nourish our bodies, many are yet gaunt, emaciated of spirit, because they are not feeding on God’s word. This is where our true strength lies. We can do all things through the strength He gives us (Phil. 4:13).

    Brethren, we must not take our relationship with God for granted nor neglect our spiritual fitness by failing to spend time communing with Him through the Scriptures He so graciously gave us.

    His word is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, able to prepare us for every good work (1 Tim. 3:16-17). His word will gird us, is our weapon against evil (Eph. 6:17), able to pierce the heart, dividing between joint and marrow, soul and spirit (Heb. 4:12). And His word is true food.

    Let us, therefore, take time daily to be in His word, drawing close to Him, that He might draw close to us, and that He might “strengthen you,” and “help you,” and “uphold you with [His] righteous right hand” (Isa. 41:10).

    All the strength supplied to us by our gracious God is meant for service, not for wantonness or boasting. When the prophet Elijah found the cake baked on the coals, and the cruse of water placed at his head, as he lay under the juniper tree, he was no gentleman to be gratified with dainty fare that he might stretch himself at his ease; far otherwise, he was commissioned to go forty days and forty nights in the strength of it, journeying towards Horeb, the mount of God. When the Master invited the disciples to "Come and dine" with Him, after the feast was concluded He said to Peter, "Feed my sheep"; further adding, "Follow me." Even thus it is with us; we eat the bread of heaven, that we may expend our strength in the Master's service. We come to the passover, and eat of the paschal lamb with loins girt, and staff in hand, so as to start off at once when we have satisfied our hunger. Some Christians are for living on Christ, but are not so anxious to live for Christ. Earth should be a preparation for heaven; and heaven is the place where saints feast most and work most. They sit down at the table of our Lord, and they serve Him day and night in His temple. They eat of heavenly food and render perfect service. Believer, in the strength you daily gain from Christ labour for Him. Some of us have yet to learn much concerning the design of our Lord in giving us His grace. We are not to retain the precious grains of truth as the Egyptian mummy held the wheat for ages, without giving it an opportunity to grow: we must sow it and water it. Why does the Lord send down the rain upon the thirsty earth, and give the genial sunshine? Is it not that these may all help the fruits of the earth to yield food for man? Even so the Lord feeds and refreshes our souls that we may afterwards use our renewed strength in the promotion of His glory.

  • Brethren, how may we lay up fruit for the Lord? We must abide in Him. For the vine may not bear fruit apart from the root. No, it gets its strength from the root, and is only able to bear because of the nourishment it receives.

    If a branch is severed from the root, it does nothing but wither and eventually die, unless it is quickly grafted back in.

    Jesus is our root, the true vine (Jn. 15:1). Let us abide in Him that we may bear fruit, we cannot do so of ourselves, nor apart from Him can we do anything - at least, anything that pleases God (Jn. 15:4-5).

    What happens if we do not abide? God is as a vinedresser, pruning away any branches that do not bear fruit, that the branches remaining may bear more. And as the severed branch quickly withers and dies, so does the spiritual life of the one who does not abide in Christ (Jn. 15:6).

    This is to God’s glory, that we bear much fruit; this is evidence that we are His disciples (Jn. 15:8). What is this fruit? Paul tells us that “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Gal. 5:22-23). Are these fruits evident in your life?

    There is other fruit as well; that of evangelism and discipleship. Jesus told His disciples that the field was ripe for harvest, that we should be gathering fruit for eternal life (Jn. 4:35-36). We must continue sowing His word, and reaping the harvest of that sowing.

    Christian, do not be as the branch not bearing fruit that will be cut off; abide in Him and bear the fruit of the grace you have received.

    The spouse desires to give to Jesus all that she produces. Our heart has "all manner of pleasant fruits," both "old and new," and they are laid up for our Beloved. At this rich autumnal season of fruit, let us survey our stores. We have new fruits. We desire to feel new life, new joy, new gratitude; we wish to make new resolves and carry them out by new labours; our heart blossoms with new prayers, and our soul is pledging herself to new efforts. But we have some old fruits too. There is our first love: a choice fruit that! and Jesus delights in it. There is our first faith: that simple faith by which, having nothing, we became possessors of all things. There is our joy when first we knew the Lord: let us revive it. We have our old remembrances of the promises. How faithful has God been! In sickness, how softly did He make our bed! In deep waters, how placidly did He buoy us up! In the flaming furnace, how graciously did He deliver us. Old fruits, indeed! We have many of them, for His mercies have been more than the hairs of our head. Old sins we must regret, but then we have had repentances which He has given us, by which we have wept our way to the cross, and learned the merit of His blood. We have fruits, this morning, both new and old; but here is the point- they are all laid up for Jesus. Truly, those are the best and most acceptable services in which Jesus is the solitary aim of the soul, and His glory, without any admixture whatever, the end of all our efforts. Let our many fruits be laid up only for our Beloved; let us display them when He is with us, and not hold them up before the gaze of men. Jesus, we will turn the key in our garden door, and none shall enter to rob Thee of one good fruit from the soil which Thou hast watered with Thy bloody sweat.   • Believer, are you as the myrtle planted in the valley, standing strong, restig=ng in the security provided by our God who planted you there? God says, “the myrtle will come up, and it will be a memorial to the Lord, for an everlasting sign which will not be cut off” (Isa. 55:13).

    Praise the Lord! Not only has He planted and raised us, but we shall never be cut off!

    Not only this, but the Lord stands among us and preserves us in peace (Zech. 1:10-11). He fights our enemies for us and has compassion on us. Eventually, He will return visibly and restore all things. Then we shall dwell with Him forever.

    While we await Him, let us be as the myrtle, evergreen, always exhibiting life in Him, and bearing much fruit.

    "The myrtle trees that were in the bottom." Zechariah 1:8

    The vision in this chapter describes the condition of Israel in Zechariah's day; but being interpreted in its aspect towards us, it describes the Church of God as we find it now in the world. The Church is compared to a myrtle grove flourishing in a valley. It is hidden, unobserved, secreted; courting no honour and attracting no observation from the careless gazer. The Church, like her head, has a glory, but it is concealed from carnal eyes, for the time of her breaking forth in all her splendour is not yet come. The idea of tranquil security is also suggested to us: for the myrtle grove in the valley is still and calm, while the storm sweeps over the mountain summits. Tempests spend their force upon the craggy peaks of the Alps, but down yonder where flows the stream which maketh glad the city of our God, the myrtles flourish by the still waters, all unshaken by the impetuous wind. How great is the inward tranquility of God's Church! Even when opposed and persecuted, she has a peace which the world gives not, and which, therefore, it cannot take away: the peace of God which passeth all understanding keeps the hearts and minds of God's people. Does not the metaphor forcibly picture the peaceful, perpetual growth of the saints? The myrtle sheds not her leaves, she is always green; and the Church in her worst time still hath a blessed verdure of grace about her; nay, she has sometimes exhibited most verdure when her winter has been sharpest. She has prospered most when her adversities have been most severe. Hence the text hints at victory. The myrtle is the emblem of peace, and a significant token of triumph. The brows of conquerors were bound with myrtle and with laurel; and is not the Church ever victorious? Is not every Christian more than a conqueror through Him that loved him? Living in peace, do not the saints fall asleep in the arms of victory?

  • Brethren, are you living your life according to the desires of your flesh? Are we not told to “walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh” (Gal. 5:16)?

    You have been made a new creation; the old has passed away (2 Cor. 5:17). Why then would you return to living by the flesh? Jesus warned that “the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Mt. 26:41). Paul understood this and tells us that “the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please” (Gal. 5:17; Rom. 7:14-25).

    Let us then turn to the one who strengthens us (Isa. 41:10; Phil. 4:13), and walk in the Spirit by Whom we are indwelt (1 Cor. 3:16), with whom God sealed us as a deposit, the seal of our salvation (Eph. 1:13-14), and in so doing, let the fruit He bears through us, “ove, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Gal. 5:22) be made evident to all.

    "If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit." Galatians 5:25

    The two most important things in our holy religion are the life of faith and the walk of faith. He who shall rightly understand these is not far from being a master in experimental theology, for they are vital points to a Christian. You will never find true faith unattended by true godliness; on the other hand, you will never discover a truly holy life which has not for its root a living faith upon the righteousness of Christ. Woe unto those who seek after the one without the other! There are some who cultivate faith and forget holiness; these may be very high in orthodoxy, but they shall be very deep in condemnation, for they hold the truth in unrighteousness; and there are others who have strained after holiness of life, but have denied the faith, like the Pharisees of old, of whom the Master said, they were "whitewashed sepulchres." We must have faith, for this is the foundation; we must have holiness of life, for this is the superstructure. Of what service is the mere foundation of a building to a man in the day of tempest? Can he hide himself therein? He wants a house to cover him, as well as a foundation for that house. Even so we need the superstructure of spiritual life if we would have comfort in the day of doubt. But seek not a holy life without faith, for that would be to erect a house which can afford no permanent shelter, because it has no foundation on a rock. Let faith and life be put together, and, like the two abutments of an arch, they will make our piety enduring. Like light and heat streaming from the same sun, they are alike full of blessing. Like the two pillars of the temple, they are for glory and for beauty. They are two streams from the fountain of grace; two lamps lit with holy fire; two olive trees watered by heavenly care. O Lord, give us this day life within, and it will reveal itself without to Thy glory.

  • Christian, do you keep God at arm’s length in your life? Does He seem distant to you, or do you distance yourself from Him? Why should this be?

    James tells us that we should “draw near to God and He will draw near to you” (Jas. 4:8).

    What excuse are you using to not be close to Him? Are you harboring some personal desire, perhaps a hidden sin, that prevents you being intimate with Him? Is there anything in your mind or heart of which God isn’t already aware?

    If something is holding you back, confess it, for He is faithful and just and will forgive you and cleanse you from all unrighteousness (1 Jn. 1:9). There is no sin so great it cannot be washed clean by the blood of Jesus. This is why Scripture says we should “draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water” (Heb. 10:22).

    By the greatness of the love God has bestowed on us, we are called His children (1 Jn. 3:1). What child would not wish to be close to such a loving Father?

    Beloved, be not like the Israelites of whom Isaiah wrote, or the Pharisees against whom Jesus quoted Isaiah saying, “this people draw near with their words and honor Me with their lip service, but they remove their hearts far from Me, and their reverence for Me consists of tradition learned by rote” (Isa. 29:13). Instead, “let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Heb. 4:16). He has called us to be “a people near unto Him” (Ps. 148:14).

    The dispensation of the old covenant was that of distance. When God appeared even to His servant Moses, He said, "Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet"; and when He manifested Himself upon Mount Sinai, to His own chosen and separated people, one of the first commands was, "Thou shalt set bounds about the mount." Both in the sacred worship of the tabernacle and the temple, the thought of distance was always prominent. The mass of the people did not even enter the outer court. Into the inner court none but the priests might dare to intrude; while into the innermost place, or the holy of holies, the high priest entered but once in the year. It was as if the Lord in those early ages would teach man that sin was so utterly loathsome to Him, that He must treat men as lepers put without the camp; and when He came nearest to them, He yet made them feel the width of the separation between a holy God and an impure sinner. When the gospel came, we were placed on quite another footing. The word "Go" was exchanged for "Come"; distance was made to give place to nearness, and we who aforetime were afar off, were made nigh by the blood of Jesus Christ. Incarnate Deity has no wall of fire about it. "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest," is the joyful proclamation of God as He appears in human flesh. Not now does He teach the leper his leprosy by setting him at a distance, but by Himself suffering the penalty of His defilement. What a state of safety and privilege is this nearness to God through Jesus! Do you know it by experience? If you know it, are you living in the power of it? Marvellous is this nearness, yet it is to be followed by a dispensation of greater nearness still, when it shall be said, "The tabernacle of God is with men, and He doth dwell among them." Hasten it, O Lord.
    Christian, do you keep God at arm’s length in your life? Does He seem distant to you, or do you distance yourself from Him? Why should this be? James tells us that we should “draw near to God and He will draw near to you” (Jas. 4:8). What excuse are you using to not be close to Him? Are you harboring some personal desire, perhaps a hidden sin, that prevents you being intimate with Him? Is there anything in your mind or heart of which God isn’t already aware? If something is holding you back, confess it, for He is faithful and just and will forgive you and cleanse you from all unrighteousness (1 Jn. 1:9). There is no sin so great it cannot be washed clean by the blood of Jesus. This is why Scripture says we should “draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water” (Heb. 10:22). By the greatness of the love God has bestowed on us, we are called His children (1 Jn. 3:1). What child would not wish to be close to such a loving Father? Beloved, be not like the Israelites of whom Isaiah wrote, or the Pharisees against whom Jesus quoted Isaiah saying, “this people draw near with their words and honor Me with their lip service, but they remove their hearts far from Me, and their reverence for Me consists of tradition learned by rote” (Isa. 29:13). Instead, “let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Heb. 4:16). Psalm 148:14 The dispensation of the old covenant was that of distance. When God appeared even to His servant Moses, He said, "Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet"; and when He manifested Himself upon Mount Sinai, to His own chosen and separated people, one of the first commands was, "Thou shalt set bounds about the mount." Both in the sacred worship of the tabernacle and the temple, the thought of distance was always prominent. The mass of the people did not even enter the outer court. Into the inner court none but the priests might dare to intrude; while into the innermost place, or the holy of holies, the high priest entered but once in the year. It was as if the Lord in those early ages would teach man that sin was so utterly loathsome to Him, that He must treat men as lepers put without the camp; and when He came nearest to them, He yet made them feel the width of the separation between a holy God and an impure sinner. When the gospel came, we were placed on quite another footing. The word "Go" was exchanged for "Come"; distance was made to give place to nearness, and we who aforetime were afar off, were made nigh by the blood of Jesus Christ. Incarnate Deity has no wall of fire about it. "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest," is the joyful proclamation of God as He appears in human flesh. Not now does He teach the leper his leprosy by setting him at a distance, but by Himself suffering the penalty of His defilement. What a state of safety and privilege is this nearness to God through Jesus! Do you know it by experience? If you know it, are you living in the power of it? Marvellous is this nearness, yet it is to be followed by a dispensation of greater nearness still, when it shall be said, "The tabernacle of God is with men, and He doth dwell among them." Hasten it, O Lord.

  • Brethren, is God's strength in you? Do you say with Paul, "I can do all things through Him who strengthens me" (Phil. 4:13)? Or are you fearful and anxious, despite God telling you, "do not fear, for I am with you; do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. surely I will help you, surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand" (Isa. 41:10)?

    When we rely on, and rest in, God for our strength, we are like springs, or clouds bringing rain, in a barren and desolate place.

    Do not be moved by your circumstances. For "the Lord will give strength to His people" (Ps. 29:11). He has so promised, and He does not lie (Num. 4:29).

    Let us, therefore, be as the cedars of Lebanon planted by God (Ps. 104:16), not easily swayed, but standing tall and powerful in the strength of the Lord, that we may show forth His greatness and glory, and "fill the wells" (Ps. 84:6) that others might find refreshment.

    "Who passing through the valley of Baca make it a well, the rain also filleth the pools." Psalm 84:6

    This teaches us that the comfort obtained by a one may often prove serviceable to another; just as wells would be used by the company who came after. We read some book full of consolation, which is like Jonathan's rod, dropping with honey. Ah! we think our brother has been here before us, and digged this well for us as well as for himself. Many a "Night of Weeping," "Midnight Harmonies," an "Eternal Day," "A Crook in the Lot," a "Comfort for Mourners," has been a well digged by a pilgrim for himself, but has proved quite as useful to others. Specially we notice this in the Psalms, such as that beginning, "Why art thou cast down, O my soul?" Travellers have been delighted to see the footprint of man on a barren shore, and we love to see the waymarks of pilgrims while passing through the vale of tears.

    The pilgrims dig the well, but, strange enough, it fills from the top instead of the bottom. We use the means, but the blessing does not spring from the means. We dig a well, but heaven fills it with rain. The horse is prepared against the day of battle, but safety is of the Lord. The means are connected with the end, but they do not of themselves produce it. See here the rain fills the pools, so that the wells become useful as reservoirs for the water; labour is not lost, but yet it does not supersede divine help.

    Grace may well be compared to rain for its purity, for its refreshing and vivifying influence, for its coming alone from above, and for the sovereignty with which it is given or withheld. May our readers have showers of blessing, and may the wells they have digged be filled with water! Oh, what are means and ordinances without the smile of heaven! They are as clouds without rain, and pools without water. O God of love, open the windows of heaven and pour us out a blessing!

Do ye indeed speak righteousness, O congregation? do ye judge uprightly, O ye sons of men? 2 Yea, in heart ye work wickedness; ye weigh the violence of your hands in the earth. 3 The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies. 4 Their poison is like the poison of a serpent: they are like the deaf adder that stoppeth her ear; 5 Which will not hearken to the voice of charmers, charming never so wisely. 6 Break their teeth, O God, in their mouth: break out the great teeth of the young lions, O LORD. 7 Let them melt away as waters which run continually: when he bendeth his bow to shoot his arrows, let them be as cut in pieces. 8 As a snail which melteth, let every one of them pass away: like the untimely birth of a woman, that they may not see the sun. 9 Before your pots can feel the thorns, he shall take them away as with a whirlwind, both living, and in his wrath. 10 The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance: he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked. 11 So that a man shall say, Verily there is a reward for the righteous: verily he is a God that judgeth in the earth.
