  • Brethren, are you in need? In need of what? God promises to supply all our needs according to His riches in glory in Christ (Phil. 4:19). If anyone has need, all we need to is ask. For Scripture says, “Ask, and it shall be given you” (Mt. 7:7).

    Why then do we do without? Perhaps we doubt the promise. James tells us we “must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways” (Jas. 1:6-7).

    Perhaps we confuse “need” with “want.” Such lusts can lead us to trouble. God promises to give “what is good”, meaning, that which is good for us, just as any good parent would (Mt. 7:11 - Luke relates this to the Holy Spirit in Lk. 11:13). But when we ask for our fleshly desires, why should we expect our Father to acquiesce? As James exhorts, “You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures” (Jas 4:3).

    Let us remember, Jesus told us not to store up here treasures for ourselves (Mt. 6:19). Instead, we are to seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and our needs will be met (Mt. 6:33).

    Do not seek after worldly wealth. For such perishes, and those who lust after it pierce themselves with many griefs (1 Ti. 6:9-10). No, let us see our needs, and His desires. “For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content” (1 Tim. 6:7-8).

    Yes, let us be content, so long as we have our needs met, and when we have needs, let us ask, “for everyone who asks receives” (Mt.7:8).

    "Ask, and it shall be given you." Matthew 7:7

    We know of a place in England still existing, where a dole of bread is served to every passerby who chooses to ask for it. Whoever the traveller may be, he has but to knock at the door of St. Cross Hospital, and there is the dole of bread for him. Jesus Christ so loveth sinners that He has built a St. Cross Hospital, so that whenever a sinner is hungry, he has but to knock and have his wants supplied. Nay, He has done better; He has attached to this Hospital of the Cross a bath; and whenever a soul is black and filthy, it has but to go there and be washed. The fountain is always full, always efficacious. No sinner ever went into it and found that it could not wash away his stains. Sins which were scarlet and crimson have all disappeared, and the sinner has been whiter than snow. As if this were not enough, there is attached to this Hospital of the Cross a wardrobe, and a sinner making application simply as a sinner, may be clothed from head to foot; and if he wishes to be a soldier, he may not merely have a garment for ordinary wear, but armour which shall cover him from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. If he asks for a sword, he shall have that given to him, and a shield too. Nothing that is good for him shall be denied him. He shall have spending-money so long as he lives, and he shall have an eternal heritage of glorious treasure when he enters into the joy of his Lord.

    If all these things are to be had by merely knocking at mercy's door, O my soul, knock hard this morning, and ask large things of thy generous Lord. Leave not the throne of grace till all thy wants have been spread before the Lord, and until by faith thou hast a comfortable prospect that they shall be all supplied. No bashfulness need retard when Jesus invites. No unbelief should hinder when Jesus promises. No cold-heartedness should restrain when such blessings are to be obtained.

    30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.

  • Brethren, be thankful to the Lord, for He has chosen to show you mercy. Yes, showing you mercy is God’s choice, “For He says to Moses, ‘I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion’” (Rom. 9:15).

    This is a difficult passage for many, but it reveals for us God’s sovereignty in all things. God is creator and upholder of all (Gen. 1; Heb. 1:3). All belongs to Him, as Scripture delcares, “The earth is the Lord’s and all it contains, the world and those who dwell in it” (Psalm. 24:1). Does He then not have right to do with His possession as He pleases?

    Therefore, again I say, be thankful! For God has dealt mercifully with us, even though His mercy is undeserved. If He were to deal justly with all, all would be condemned, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23).

    We should neither decry nor dismiss God’s sovereignty; rather, we should be grateful for it. Left to ourselves, we would all stand condemned. Yet God, in His great mercy, according to His good pleasure, saves those who otherwise deserve it not.

    Therefore, be humble in your salvation, because all you have contributed to it is the sin that makes it necessary. And show mercy to others (Mt. 5:7), because as Jesus instructed, freely we have received, therefore freely we should give (Mt.10:8).

    "For He saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion." Romans 9:15

    In these words the Lord in the plainest manner claims the right to give or to withhold His mercy according to His own sovereign will. As the prerogative of life and death is vested in the monarch, so the Judge of all the earth has a right to spare or condemn the guilty, as may seem best in His sight. Men by their sins have forfeited all claim upon God; they deserve to perish for their sins- and if they all do so, they have no ground for complaint. If the Lord steps in to save any, He may do so if the ends of justice are not thwarted; but if He judges it best to leave the condemned to suffer the righteous sentence, none may arraign Him at their bar. Foolish and impudent are all those discourses about the rights of men to be all placed on the same footing; ignorant, if not worse, are those contentions against discriminating grace, which are but the rebellions of proud human nature against the crown and sceptre of Jehovah. When we are brought to see our own utter ruin and ill desert, and the justice of the divine verdict against sin, we no longer cavil at the truth that the Lord is not bound to save us; we do not murmur if He chooses to save others, as though He were doing us an injury, but feel that if He deigns to look upon us, it will be His own free act of undeserved goodness, for which we shall for ever bless His name.

    How shall those who are the subjects of divine election sufficiently adore the grace of God? They have no room for boasting, for sovereignty most effectually excludes it. The Lord's will alone is glorified, and the very notion of human merit is cast out to everlasting contempt. There is no more humbling doctrine in Scripture than that of election, none more promotive of gratitude, and, consequently, none more sanctifying. Believers should not be afraid of it, but adoringly rejoice in it.

  • If we repent and return, we will be restored. If we have already repented and felt the glory of salvation, we know that the restoration for us is authentic. But, those human feelings can go up and down daily, and sometimes moment to moment, following our level of commitment to the Lord and what He has done for us and our performance as stewards of what He has given us. Repentance, then, plays not just a part in our acceptance of Jesus’ atonement for our sins but an ongoing role due to our daily stumbling and misadventures.

  • Beloved, there is a reason that sloth is considered one of the “seven deadly sins.” While such a list can be said only loosely to be founded in Scripture, laziness is spoken against in many a passage.

    We are told in Proverbs that “A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, then your poverty will come as a robber and your want like an armed man” (Prov. 24:33-34). Thinking we can while away our time and not pay consequences is foolishness. Laziness results in poverty.

    Conversely, productivity and hard work result in sustenance, at the very least. This is, unfortunately, a result of living in a fallen world. As God promised Adam, “Cursed is the ground because of you; in toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; and you will eat the plants of the field; by the sweat of your face you will eat bread, until you return to the ground” (Gen. 3:17-19).

    We often believe there is virtue in giving to those who lack, but how frequently do we consider the reason for that lack? Paul himself taught that “if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either” (2 Thes. 3:10). This echoes the admonition from Proverbs.

    Therefore, let no one among the body of Christ lead an undisciplined life, not working but eating of the bread of others; instead let us work for and eat the fruit of our own labors and never grow weary of doing good (2 Thes. 3:12-13).

    The worst of sluggards only ask for a little slumber; they would be indignant if they were accused of thorough idleness. A little folding of the hands to sleep is all they crave, and they have a crowd of reasons to show that this indulgence is a very proper one. Yet by these littles the day ebbs out, and the time for labour is all gone, and the field is grown over with thorns. It is by little procrastinations that men ruin their souls. They have no intention to delay for years- a few months will bring the more convenient season- tomorrow if you will, they will attend to serious things; but the present hour is so occupied and altogether so unsuitable, that they beg to be excused. Like sands from an hour-glass, time passes, life is wasted by driblets, and seasons of grace lost by little slumbers. Oh, to be wise, to catch the flying hour, to use the moments on the wing! May the Lord teach us this sacred wisdom, for otherwise a poverty of the worst sort awaits us, eternal poverty which shall want even a drop of water, and beg for it in vain. Like a traveller steadily pursuing his journey, poverty overtakes the slothful, and ruin overthrows the undecided: each hour brings the dreaded pursuer nearer; he pauses not by the way, for he is on his master's business and must not tarry. As an armed man enters with authority and power, so shall want come to the idle, and death to the impenitent, and there will be no escape. O that men were wise be-times, and would seek diligently unto the Lord Jesus, or ere the solemn day shall dawn when it will be too late to plough and to sow, too late to repent and believe. In harvest, it is vain to lament that the seed time was neglected. As yet, faith and holy decision are timely. May we obtain them this night.

  • Believer, what do you count as gain? Is it material wealth? Notoriety? Acceptance from those around you?

    In light of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus our Lord, these are but rubbish (Phil. 3:8)! Our calling is higher and of higher value than anything from the world. It is not for us to love the world nor the things in it (1 Jn. 2:15-16), but to love Christ, and through Him, our Father in heaven.

    Do not set your sights on the things of this world; they all shall perish. Neither lay up treasures for yourself here (Mt. 6:19). This is not our home. One day, we will part, and any earthly treasures will remain behind. As Job stated, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I shall return there” (Job. 1:21). But when we seek our treasures here, we expose the desire of our hearts, that we long not after God. Forget not, you cannot serve two masters (Mt. 6:24).

    Instead, let us put these things behind, seeking the righteousness which is by faith, so we may know the power of Jesus’ resurrection, also knowing the fellowship of His sufferings (Phil. 3:9-10). He left us an example that we should follow in His steps (1 Pet. 2:21), entrusting ourselves to God (1 Pet. 2:23), and dying to sin that we might live to righteousness (1 Pet. 2:24).

    The doctrine of a risen Saviour is exceedingly precious. The resurrection is the corner-stone of the entire building of Christianity. It is the key-stone of the arch of our salvation. It would take a volume to set forth all the streams of living water which flow from this one sacred source, the resurrection of our dear Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ; but to know that He has risen, and to have fellowship with Him as such- communing with the risen Saviour by possessing a risen life- seeing Him leave the tomb by leaving the tomb of worldliness ourselves, this is even still more precious. The doctrine is the basis of the experience, but as the flower is more lovely than the root, so is the experience of fellowship with the risen Saviour more lovely than the doctrine itself. I would have you believe that Christ rose from the dead so as to sing of it, and derive all the consolation which it is possible for you to extract from this well-ascertained and well-witnessed fact; but I beseech you, rest not contented even there. Though you cannot, like the disciples, see Him visibly, yet I bid you aspire to see Christ Jesus by the eye of faith; and though, like Mary Magdalene, you may not "touch" Him, yet may you be privileged to converse with Him, and to know that He is risen, you yourselves being risen in Him to newness of life. To know a crucified Saviour as having crucified all my sins, is a high degree of knowledge; but to know a risen Saviour as having justified me, and to realize that He has bestowed upon me new life, having given me to be a new creature through His own newness of life, this is a noble style of experience: short of it, none ought to rest satisfied. May you both "know Him, and the power of His resurrection." Why should souls who are quickened with Jesus, wear the grave-clothes of worldliness and unbelief? Rise, for the Lord is risen.
    Believer, what do you count as gain? Is it material wealth? Notoriety? Acceptance from those around you? In light of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus our Lord, these are but rubbish (Phil. 3:8)! Our calling is higher and of higher value than anything from the world. It is not for us to love the world nor the things in it (1 Jn. 2:15-16), but to love Christ, and through Him, our Father in heaven. Do not set your sights on the things of this world; they all shall perish. Neither lay up treasures for yourself here (Mt. 6:19). This is not our home. One day, we will part, and any earthly treasures will remain behind. As Job stated, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I shall return there” (Job. 1:21). But when we seek our treasures here, we expose the desire of our hearts, that we long not after God. Forget not, you cannot serve two masters (Mt. 6:24). Instead, let us put these things behind, seeking the righteousness which is by faith, so we may know the power of Jesus’ resurrection, also knowing the fellowship of His sufferings (Phil. 3:9-10). He left us an example that we should follow in His steps (1 Pet. 2:21), entrusting ourselves to God (1 Pet. 2:23), and dying to sin that we might live to righteousness (1 Pet. 2:24). —————— Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening Devotions Evening, November 22 "The power of His resurrection."   • Christian, do you recall the story of Jacob? Having met Rachel at the well, Jacob served her father Laban in order to win her hand. He sacrificed sleep and comfort in that time, but eventually had his wife.

    Did not Jesus sacrifice more to win His bride, the Church? Jesus, though sinless, having fulfilled the law perfectly, suffered humiliation, brutal beatings, and rather than sleep or comfort, though He often sacrificed these, He sacrificed Himself. As He stated, “the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mk. 10:45).

    Brethren, let us marvel at this miracle of miracles, and not take it for granted. God paid for our sins, just as He provided the ram for Abraham that Isaac was not sacrificed (Gen. 22:8-13), providing His own Son, a spotless Lamb, that we need not be sacrificed (1 Pet. 1:19).

    Jesus toiled for us, traveling city to city, preaching the gospel and God’s kingdom, that those He called would believe through the sacrifice He was preparing. Then at the appointed time, He went to the cross, neither reviling in return those who reviled Him, nor uttering threats; but He entrusted Himself to His Father, and bore our sins on the cross so that we might die to sin and life to righteousness (1 Pet. 2:21-25).

    Let us ever remember this sacrifice which cancelled our debt and led to the forgiveness of our transgressions (Col. 2:13-15), and live our lives as those who are dead to sin but alive to God (Rom. 6:11).

    Jacob, while expostulating with Laban, thus describes his own toil, "This twenty years have I been with thee. That which was torn of beasts I brought not unto thee: I bare the loss of it; of my hand didst thou require it, whether stolen by day, or stolen by night. Thus I was; in the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep departed from mine eyes." Even more toilsome than this was the life of our Saviour here below. He watched over all His sheep till He gave in as His last account, "Of all those whom Thou hast given me I have lost none." His hair was wet with dew, and His locks with the drops of the night. Sleep departed from His eyes, for all night He was in prayer wrestling for His people. One night Peter must be pleaded for; anon, another claims His tearful intercession. No shepherd sitting beneath the cold skies, looking up to the stars, could ever utter such complaints because of the hardness of his toil as Jesus Christ might have brought, if He had chosen to do so, because of the sternness of His service in order to procure His spouse:

    Cold mountains and the midnight air,
    Witnessed the fervour of His prayer;
    The desert His temptations knew,
    His conflict and His victory too.

    It is sweet to dwell upon the spiritual parallel of Laban having required all the sheep at Jacob's hand. If they were torn of beasts, Jacob must make it good; if any of them died, he must stand as surety for the whole. Was not the toil of Jesus for His Church the toil of one who was under suretiship obligations to bring every believing one safe to the hand of Him who had committed them to His charge? Look upon toiling Jacob, and you see a representation of Him of whom we read, "He shall feed His flock like a shepherd."

  • Christian, just as Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, He has similarly raised us. No, we have not yet died and been resurrected, but we were dead in our trespasses and sins when God made us alive together with Christ (Eph. 2:1,5).

    Later, several days before his last Passover, Jesus entered Lazarus’ house to dine with Lazarus and his sisters. While one sister served and the other anointed Jesus’ feet, Lazarus sat at the table and dined with Jesus (Jn. 12:2).

    Brethren, do you realize that Jesus wants the same from you? Do you believe you have all you require, that you are rich and in need of nothing as did those in Laodicea (Rev. 3:17)? Take honest stock of yourself. Come to Christ to purchase refined gold that you may be rich, and white robes that you may be clothed, and salve for your eyes that you may see (Rev. 3:18). For Jesus stands at the door knocking, waiting for you to hear his voice and open the door that He might come in and dine with you and you with Him (Rev. 3:20).

    Could there be a greater honor? A more blessed time? To sit with Jesus at the table and dine is reserved for those who are His. Do not be lukewarm (Rev. 3:16), and do not leave Jesus out in the cold. Open the door; dine with Him. Enjoy the blessing of sharing this blessed time with Him!

    "Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with Him." John 12:2

    He is to be envied. It was well to be Martha and serve, but better to be Lazarus and commune. There are times for each purpose, and each is comely in its season, but none of the trees of the garden yield such clusters as the vine of fellowship. To sit with Jesus, to hear His words, to mark His acts, and receive His smiles, was such a favour as must have made Lazarus as happy as the angels. When it has been our happy lot to feast with our Beloved in His banqueting-hall, we would not have given half a sigh for all the kingdoms of the world, if so much breath could have bought them.

    He is to be imitated. It would have been a strange thing if Lazarus had not been at the table where Jesus was, for he had been dead, and Jesus had raised him. For the risen one to be absent when the Lord who gave him life was at his house, would have been ungrateful indeed. We too were once dead, yea, and like Lazarus stinking in the grave of sin; Jesus raised us, and by His life we live- can we be content to live at a distance from Him? Do we omit to remember Him at His table, where He deigns to feast with His brethren? Oh, this is cruel! It behoves us to repent, and do as He has bidden us, for His least wish should be law to us. To have lived without constant intercourse with one of whom the Jews said, "Behold how He loved him," would have been disgraceful to Lazarus, is it excusable in us whom Jesus has loved with an everlasting love? To have been cold to Him who wept over his lifeless corpse, would have argued great brutishness in Lazarus. What does it argue in us over whom the Saviour has not only wept, but bled? Come, brethren, who read this portion, let us return unto our heavenly Bridegroom, and ask for His Spirit that we may be on terms of closer intimacy with Him, and henceforth sit at the table with Him.

  • There are many sins over which our hearts should be grieved. The murder of unborn babies is only one. In my mind, it is a very serious sin that affects the entire population.

  • Brethren, God has no love for the double-minded, nor will such a person receive anything from Him (Jas. 1:7). For the double-minded man is unstable and unfaithful. Why would God honor such a one?

    Though related, worse even than simple double-mindedness is divided loyalty. Jesus taught of this, exhorting that “no one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other” (Mt. 6:24). While Jesus explicitly tied this to money, it is true of any idol.

    Consider the politician who holds dual citizenship? Can he be said truly to always have the interest of America at heart? Or are his interests, and thus, loyalty, divided? How can one serve in the Congress of the U.S. and seek that which is best for America when dealing with matters of foreign affairs that affect the politician’s country of origin?

    Likewise, any idol we attempt to serve while attempting also to serve God divides our minds and our loyalty, and it will result in being cut off. For God is a jealous God (Ex. 20:5; Deut. 4:24) and promises, “I will cut off…those who bow down and swear to the LORD and yet swear by Milcom” (Zeph. 1:5).

    God doesn’t want half-hearted followers. He wants all of us. As He says in Deuteronomy, “You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.” (Jer. 29:13; Deut. 4:29).

    What in your life is dividing your allegiance? What pursuits are drawing you away from God instead of leading you to Him? Let us not be double-minded, but instead, “lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us” (Heb. 12:1).

    Such persons thought themselves safe because they were with both parties: they went with the followers of Jehovah, and bowed at the same time to Malcham. But duplicity is abominable with God, and hypocrisy His soul hateth. The idolater who distinctly gives himself to his false god, has one sin less than he who brings his polluted and detestable sacrifice unto the temple of the Lord, while his heart is with the world and the sins thereof. To hold with the hare and run with the hounds, is a dastard's policy. In the common matters of daily life, a double-minded man is despised, but in religion he is loathsome to the last degree. The penalty pronounced in the verse before us is terrible, but it is well deserved; for how should divine justice spare the sinner, who knows the right, approves it, and professes to follow it, and all the while loves the evil, and gives it dominion in his heart?

    My soul, search thyself this morning, and see whether thou art guilty of double-dealing. Thou professest to be a follower of Jesus- dost thou truly love Him? Is thy heart right with God? Art thou of the family of old Father Honest, or art thou a relative of Mr. By-ends? A name to live is of little value if I be indeed dead in trespasses and sins. To have one foot on the land of truth, and another on the sea of falsehood, will involve a terrible fall and a total ruin. Christ will be all or nothing. God fills the whole universe, and hence there is no room for another god; if, then, He reigns in my heart, there will be no space for another reigning power. Do I rest alone on Jesus crucified, and live alone for Him? Is it my desire to do so? Is my heart set upon so doing? If so, blessed be the mighty grace which has led me to salvation; and if not so, O Lord, pardon my sad offence, and unite my heart to fear Thy name.

  • Believer, how often do you pray? Do you pray always and not lose heart? This is the instruction of the Lord to His followers in Luke 18:1, that “at all times [we] ought to pray and not to lose heart” (Lk. 18:1).

    He demonstrates this with the parable of the unjust judge and the widow who would not rest until she received justice. Eventually, the unjust judge, though he feared neither man nor God, relented. Then Jesus reveals the meaning behind His message: “will not God bring about justice for His elect who cry to Him day and night, and will He delay long over them? I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly” (Lk. 18:7-8).

    Brethren, when you suffer injustice, do not become disheartened. Bring your plea to God, with thanksgiving, and He will give you peace (Phil. 4:6-7). Our Father in heaven, unlike the man in Jesus parable, is a just judge. How then will He not provide justice for His adopted children, those He has chosen?

    Our Father knows our need before we even ask (Mt. 6:8). So pray, pray continually, cry out to God for justice, and He will be there to provide it.

Creation is dumb, but the church is to find a mouth for it. It is the church's high privilege to pray with acceptance. The door of grace is always open for her petitions, and they never return empty-handed. The veil was rent for her, the blood was sprinkled upon the altar for her, God constantly invites her to ask what she wills. Will she refuse the privilege which angels might envy her? Is she not the bride of Christ? May she not go in unto her King at every hour? Shall she allow the precious privilege to be unused? The church always has need for prayer. There are always some in her midst who are declining, or falling into open sin. There are lambs to be prayed for, that they may be carried in Christ's bosom. The strong, lest they grow presumptuous; and the weak, lest they become despairing. If we kept up prayer-meetings four-and-twenty hours in the day, all the days in the year, we might never be without a special subject for supplication. Are we ever without the sick and the poor, the afflicted and the wavering? Are we ever without those who seek the conversion of relatives, the reclaiming of back-sliders, or the salvation of the depraved? Nay, with congregations constantly gathering, with ministers always preaching, with millions of sinners lying dead in trespasses and sins; in a country over which the darkness of Romanism is certainly descending; in a world full of idols, cruelties, devilries, if the church doth not pray, how shall she excuse her base neglect of the commission of her loving Lord? Let the church be constant in supplication, let every private believer cast his mite of prayer into the treasury.

  • Believer, do you preach the gospel to the lost? If not, why not? Jesus told His disciples that, when the Holy Spirit came, He would give us power to be witnesses for Jesus (Acts 1:8).

    You have the power, and you have the command. For Jesus also said, “go therefore and make disciples of all nations” (Mt. 28:19). This was not directly merely to those in a leadership role of a 501(c)3 corporation. He did not say to invite unbelievers to your gatherings so that they might hear the good news. No! He charged each and every one of His followers with preaching the kingdom of God.

    You need no special skill. You need not speak eloquently. As a matter of fact, eloquence of speech may be a hindrance. For even Paul said to the Corinthians that he did not come with “superiority of speech” nor “of wisdom” (1 Cor. 2:1). Instead, he chose to “know nothing” other than “Jesus Christ, and Him crucified” so that their “faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God” (1 Cor. 2:2,5).

    And what is that power of God? The gospel itself! As Paul also explained, he was not “ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes” (Rom. 1:16).

    The gospel is simple and straightforward. Paul summarizes it thusly:
    “For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures” (1 Cor. 15:3-4). He goes on to explain how Jesus appeared to many, but the core of the message is simple and clear.

    So, what is holding you back? Are you ashamed? If that is the case, remember Jesus’ words: “whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels” (Mk. 8:38).

    With what God did for you through His Son, not only should we be unashamed, but bold. For “God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power” (2 Tim. 1:7). Pray for God to give you boldness in witnessing, as Paul asked the Ephesians to pray for him (Eph. 6:19). Then go, preach the gospel and make disciples!

    In order to learn how to discharge your duty as a witness for Christ, look at His example. He is always witnessing: by the well of Samaria, or in the Temple of Jerusalem: by the lake of Gennesaret, or on the mountain's brow. He is witnessing night and day; His mighty prayers are as vocal to God as His daily services. He witnesses under all circumstances; Scribes and Pharisees cannot shut His mouth; even before Pilate He witnesses a good confession. He witnesses so clearly, and distinctly that there is no mistake in Him. Christian, make your life a clear testimony. Be you as the brook wherein you may see every stone at the bottom- not as the muddy creek, of which you only see the surface- but clear and transparent, so that your heart's love to God and man may be visible to all. You need not say, "I am true:" be true. Boast not of integrity, but be upright. So shall your testimony be such that men cannot help seeing it. Never, for fear of feeble man, restrain your witness. Your lips have been warmed with a coal from off the altar; let them speak as like heaven-touched lips should do. "In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand." Watch not the clouds, consult not the wind- in season and out of season witness for the Saviour, and if it shall come to pass that for Christ's sake and the gospel's you shall endure suffering in any shape, shrink not, but rejoice in the honour thus conferred upon you, that you are counted worthy to suffer with your Lord; and joy also in this- that your sufferings, your losses, and persecutions shall make you a platform, from which the more vigorously and with greater power you shall witness for Christ Jesus. Study your great Exemplar, and be filled with His Spirit. Remember that you need much teaching, much upholding, much grace, and much humility, if your witnessing is to be to your Master's glory.

  • Believer, do you ever feel forsaken, forgotten by God? You are not alone. Israel felt this way, as is recorded in Isa. 49:14. The great king David felt so, as he wrote in Psalm 22:1. Even our Lord experienced this feeling, as He quoted David while He hung on the cross for our salvation.

    But Christian, God has not forgotten you. For “He Himself has said, ‘I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you’” (Heb. 13:5). Men may turn their backs on you, friends may desert you, but God is not a man (Num. 23:19).

    Even when David felt forsaken, and the Lord in quoting Him, what does Scripture tell us? “He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; nor has He hidden His face from him; but when he cried to Him for help, He heard” (Ps. 22:24).

    As God told Israel when they believed themselves forsaken, He has written our names in His hands (Isa. 49:16). He can no more forget us than a nursing mother can forget the child on her teat (Isa. 49:15). Our adoptive Father would not be so callous as to not have compassion on those whom “He purchased with His own blood” (Acts 20:20).

    While we may at times feel distant from God, He is never far off. It is usually a case of us having wandered. But if we draw near to God, He will draw near to us (Jas. 4:8).

    Christian, take time today to draw near to God.

    "Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands." Isaiah 49:16

    No doubt a part of the wonder which is concentrated in the word "Behold", is excited by the unbelieving lamentation of the preceding sentence. Zion said, "The Lord hath forsaken me, and my God hath forgotten me." How amazed the divine mind seems to be at this wicked unbelief! What can be more astounding than the unfounded doubts and fears of God's favoured people? The Lord's loving word of rebuke should make us blush; He cries, "How can I have forgotten thee, when I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands? How darest thou doubt my constant remembrance, when the memorial is set upon my very flesh?" O unbelief, how strange a marvel thou art! We know not which most to wonder at, the faithfulness of God or the unbelief of His people. He keeps His promise a thousand times, and yet the next trial makes us doubt Him. He never faileth; He is never a dry well; He is never as a setting sun, a passing meteor, or a melting vapour; and yet we are as continually vexed with anxieties, molested with suspicions, and disturbed with fears, as if our God were the mirage of the desert. "Behold," is a word intended to excite admiration. Here, indeed, we have a theme for marvelling. Heaven and earth may well be astonished that rebels should obtain so great a nearness to the heart of infinite love as to be written upon the palms of His hands. "I have graven thee." It does not say, "Thy name." The name is there, but that is not all: "I have graven thee." See the fulness of this! I have graven thy person, thine image, thy case, thy circumstances, thy sins, thy temptations, thy weaknesses, thy wants, thy works; I have graven thee, everything about thee, all that concerns thee; I have put thee altogether there.   • Brethren, never forget that we are bound by a new covenant, not one of law, but of grace. Remember also that, just as the old covenant was sealed with the blood of circumcision, the new covenant was sealed with the blood of our savior.

    Could God have paid a higher price to redeem us than to offer up the life of His own Son? And “He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things” (Rom. 8:32)?

    Fellow believers, how blessed we are to be members of “the church of God which He purchased with His own blood” (Acts 20:28). As such, let us “present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is [our] spiritual service of worship”, and let us “not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of [our] mind[s]” (Rom. 12:1-2).

    For we were slaves to sin, but we were purchased by a new master and now are slaves to righteousness (Rom. 6:17-18). We have come to know the Truth, Jesus, and He has set us free (Jn. 8:32).

    Always keep in mind that we “not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life”, “but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ” (1 Pet. 18-19). So put the old behind, let go of your sins, because we are new creatures (2 Cor. 5:17), and it is no longer we who live, but Christ lives in us (Gal. 2:20).

    Now, by the covenant His blood, through faith, we have assurance of our salvation (1 Jn. 5:13).

    There is a strange power about the very name of blood, and the sight of it is always affecting. A kind heart cannot bear to see a sparrow bleed, and unless familiarized by use, turns away with horror at the slaughter of a beast. As to the blood of men, it is a consecrated thing: it is murder to shed it in wrath, it is a dreadful crime to squander it in war. Is this solemnity occasioned by the fact that the blood is the life, and the pouring of it forth the token of death? We think so. When we rise to contemplate the blood of the Son of God, our awe is yet more increased, and we shudder as we think of the guilt of sin, and the terrible penalty which the Sin-bearer endured. Blood, always precious, is priceless when it streams from Immanuel's side. The blood of Jesus seals the covenant of grace, and makes it for ever sure. Covenants of old were made by sacrifice, and the everlasting covenant was ratified in the same manner. Oh, the delight of being saved upon the sure foundation of divine engagements which cannot be dishonoured! Salvation by the works of the law is a frail and broken vessel whose shipwreck is sure; but the covenant vessel fears no storms, for the blood ensures the whole. The blood of Jesus made His testament valid. Wills are of no power unless the testators die. In this light the soldier's spear is a blessed aid to faith, since it proved our Lord to be really dead. Doubts upon that matter there can be none, and we may boldly appropriate the legacies which He has left for His people. Happy they who see their title to heavenly blessings assured to them by a dying Saviour. But has this blood no voice to us? Does it not bid us sanctify ourselves unto Him by whom we have been redeemed? Does it not call us to newness of life, and incite us to entire consecration to the Lord? O that the power of the blood might be known, and felt in us this night!

  • Christian, are you thankful? Truly thankful to God? This is part of our calling. We are to “give thanks to Him” and “bless His name” (Ps. 100:4).

    Our circumstances matter not. He has given us the breath of life, and more so, life eternal in Christ Jesus. How then can we not be thankful?

    When you are well, give thanks. When you have plenty, give thanks. When you are ill or imprisoned, give thanks. Hungry or in need? Give thanks! In the darkest of times, give thanks. Regardless our trials or tribulations, give thanks.

    I exaggerate not. Scripture exhorts, “in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thes. 5:18). This is not merely suggestion, it is God’s will. We are to be thankful always.

    If you are not giving thanks in all things, examine yourself. See what is within you that is preventing you showing your gratefulness to God. Then pray, with thanksgiving, letting God know what is on your heart, so that He might give you His peace which surpasses all understanding (Phil. 4:6-7).

    Remember always the words of the psalmist so that you will be ever thankful and bless His name:

    Bless the LORD, O my soul,
    And all that is within me, bless His holy name.
    Bless the LORD, O my soul,
    And forget none of His benefits;
    Who pardons all your iniquities,
    Who heals all your diseases;
    Who redeems your life from the pit,
    Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion;
    Who satisfies your years with good things,
    So that your youth is renewed like the eagle…
    He has not dealt with us according to our sins,
    Nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.
    For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
    So great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear Him.
    As far as the east is from the west,
    So far has He removed our transgressions from us.
    Just as a father has compassion on his children,
    So the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him.

    "Be thankful unto Him, and bless His name." Psalm 100:4

    Our Lord would have all His people rich in high and happy thoughts concerning His blessed person. Jesus is not content that His brethren should think meanly of Him; it is His pleasure that His espoused ones should be delighted with His beauty. We are not to regard Him as a bare necessary, like to bread and water, but as a luxurious delicacy, as a rare and ravishing delight. To this end He has revealed Himself as the "pearl of great price" in its peerless beauty, as the "bundle of myrrh" in its refreshing fragrance, as the "rose of Sharon" in its lasting perfume, as the "lily" in its spotless purity.

    As a help to high thoughts of Christ, remember the estimation that Christ is had in beyond the skies, where things are measured by the right standard. Think how God esteems the Only Begotten, His unspeakable gift to us. Consider what the angels think of Him, as they count it their highest honour to veil their faces at His feet. Consider what the blood-washed think of Him, as day without night they sing His well deserved praises. High thoughts of Christ will enable us to act consistently with our relations towards Him. The more loftily we see Christ enthroned, and the more lowly we are when bowing before the foot of the throne, the more truly shall we be prepared to act our part towards Him. Our Lord Jesus desires us to think well of Him, that we may submit cheerfully to His authority. High thoughts of Him increase our love. Love and esteem go together. Therefore, believer, think much of your Master's excellencies. Study Him in His primeval glory, before He took upon Himself your nature! Think of the mighty love which drew Him from His throne to die upon the cross! Admire Him as He conquers all the powers of hell! See Him risen, crowned, glorified! Bow before Him as the Wonderful, the Counsellor, the mighty God, for only thus will your love to Him be what it should.
    Christian, are you thankful? Truly thankful to God? This is part of our calling. We are to “give thanks to Him” and “bless His name” (Ps. 100:4). Our circumstances matter not. He has given us the breath of life, and more so, life eternal in Christ Jesus. How then can we not be thankful? When you are well, give thanks. When you have plenty, give thanks. When you are ill or imprisoned, give thanks. Hungry or in need? Give thanks! In the darkest of times, give thanks. Regardless our trials or tribulations, give thanks. I exaggerate not. Scripture exhorts, “in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thes. 5:18). This is not merely suggestion, it is God’s will. We are to be thankful always. If you are not giving thanks in all things, examine yourself. See what is within you that is preventing you showing your gratefulness to God. Then pray, with thanksgiving, letting God know what is on your heart, so that He might give you His peace which surpasses all understanding (Phil. 4:6-7). Remember always the words of the psalmist so that you will be ever thankful and bless His name: Bless the LORD, O my soul, And all that is within me, bless His holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget none of His benefits; Who pardons all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases; Who redeems your life from the pit, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion; Who satisfies your years with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle… He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, So great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear Him. As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us. Just as a father has compassion on his children, So the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him. Psalm 100:4 Our Lord would have all His people rich in high and happy thoughts concerning His blessed person. Jesus is not content that His brethren should think meanly of Him; it is His pleasure that His espoused ones should be delighted with His beauty. We are not to regard Him as a bare necessary, like to bread and water, but as a luxurious delicacy, as a rare and ravishing delight. To this end He has revealed Himself as the "pearl of great price" in its peerless beauty, as the "bundle of myrrh" in its refreshing fragrance, as the "rose of Sharon" in its lasting perfume, as the "lily" in its spotless purity. As a help to high thoughts of Christ, remember the estimation that Christ is had in beyond the skies, where things are measured by the right standard. Think how God esteems the Only Begotten, His unspeakable gift to us. Consider what the angels think of Him, as they count it their highest honour to veil their faces at His feet. Consider what the blood-washed think of Him, as day without night they sing His well deserved praises. High thoughts of Christ will enable us to act consistently with our relations towards Him. The more loftily we see Christ enthroned, and the more lowly we are when bowing before the foot of the throne, the more truly shall we be prepared to act our part towards Him. Our Lord Jesus desires us to think well of Him, that we may submit cheerfully to His authority. High thoughts of Him increase our love. Love and esteem go together. Therefore, believer, think much of your Master's excellencies. Study Him in His primeval glory, before He took upon Himself your nature!
