Genesis 1:2

And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

God had a blank canvas upon which to create anything He chose.  He is the Creator God, which, in the Hebrew is translated, "Elohim":  "El" means "strong one", representing the Godhead, Father, Son and Spirit.  In the book of Genesis, the name "Elohim" represents God's creative power.  Herbert Lockyer, in his book, "All The Divine Names and Titles in the Bible" says this:

"'In the beginning, God...' as well as in the other references, the name is in the plural, and is a foregleam of the Trinity acting in unity...Elohim, perhaps the most comprehensive of all divine names, speaks of the function of the Deity in creation, judgment, deliverance and punishment of evil-doers.  Elohim, as the Creator, expresses the fiat of Almighty God, Which called the world into existence by the Word (John 1:1-3)..."

All that to say that Elohim is the One Who took a formless, shapeless, empty and dark nothing and created all that we see and enjoy on the earth.  His Spirit "moved upon the face of the waters" as He formed everything into being.  Is this difficult for the human mind to understand?  Of course!  Our finite minds have no clue what God did or how He came up with all that He created.  We just know that His Word is true, and His Word says that He created the heavens and the earth.

The world believes that all was formed millions of years ago by a "bang".  They believe that everything came from nothing without any intervention from God.  They would be dead wrong.  When we get the beginning wrong, there is little hope that we will get anything else in God's Word correct.  There is great value in our understanding of the Godhead at work in creation.  God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit were all there, working in unity to create the heavens and the earth.
