  • "Did you know that the word "slave" derives from "Slavic," because many Eastern European Slavic peoples in the early Middle Ages (around the 9th century) were captured and sold into "slavery", mainly into the Islamic world.

Race hustlers and those who have long used a one-sided perversion of history to divide us to achieve political ends would rather people not know or think about this."

  • Archaeology may be vindicating the historical accounts of scripture again as words written in the name of Moses were discovered in an ancient Egyptian mine. Other findings suggest a spiritual conflict between the Israelites and their Egyptian overseers, plus inscriptions linked to Semitic peoples holding positions of power in Egypt at one time in Egyptian history which would be consistent with the Genesis account of the Patriarch Joseph who was sold into slavery and later became the vice-regent of the then-reigning Pharaoh.

  • Brethren, we have been set free! Free from the law. Free from our bondage to sin. Free to obey God from a sincere heart.

Now that we are loosed from our previous bonds, shall we turn back to them? May it never be! For we being freed from our slavery to sin are now purchased (1 Cor. 7:22-23) slaves of God (Rom. 6:22). Shall the slave disobey His master? No, we are to obey.

But we are told “it was for freedom that Christ set us free” (Gal. 5:1). Yes, this is true. But we are not to use our freedom as an excuse for sin (1 Pet. 2:16). We have liberty, but it should be used in pursuit of God and His purpose, and in that liberty, we should be sure we don’t cause others to stumble (1 Cor. 8:9). Just as Christ sacrificed Himself, and His personal will, to that of the Father, so should we; He set an example for us that we should follow in His steps (1 Pet. 2:21).

Brothers and sisters, let us not use our liberty to indulge selfishness and fleshly desires, but instead let us serve one another (Gal. 5:13). For “All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify” (1 Cor. 10:23).

Let us use our liberty to do those things which are profitable, which are edifying, not only for ourselves, but for others as is our calling.

    ——————
    Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening Devotions

    Morning, September 19

"The liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free." Galatians 5:1

This "liberty" makes us free to heaven's charter- the Bible. Here is a choice passage, believer, "When thou passest through the rivers, I will be with thee." You are free to that. Here is another: "The mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed, but my kindness shall not depart from thee"; you are free to that. You are a welcome guest at the table of the promises. Scripture is a never-failing treasury filled with boundless stores of grace. It is the bank of heaven; you may draw from it as much as you please, without let or hindrance. Come in faith and you are welcome to all covenant blessings. There is not a promise in the Word which shall be withheld. In the depths of tribulations let this freedom comfort you; amidst waves of distress let it cheer you; when sorrows surround thee let it be thy solace. This is thy Father's love-token; thou art free to it at all times. Thou art also free to the throne of grace. It is the believer's privilege to have access at all times to His heavenly Father. Whatever our desires, our difficulties, our wants, we are at liberty to spread all before Him. It matters not how much we may have sinned, we may ask and expect pardon. It signifies nothing how poor we are, we may plead His promise that He will provide all things needful. We have permission to approach His throne at all times- in midnight's darkest hour, or in noontide's most burning heat. Exercise thy right, O believer, and live up to thy privilege. Thou art free to all that is treasured up in Christ- wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption. It matters not what thy need is, for there is fulness of supply in Christ, and it is there for thee. O what a "freedom" is thine! freedom from condemnation, freedom to the promises, freedom to the throne of grace, and at last freedom to enter heaven!

Frankly, when a government is involved, my suspicion is precious metals will only be able to function in an underground economy. An underground economy will receive a push back even by Western-style governments. In the USA, a WE THE PEOPLE resistance possibility can resist government mandated digital money.

  • It seems no matter what or how much God did for them from the time of the Exodus throughout their desert wanderings, the Israelites always grumbled and complained. Despite the freedom from their prior slavery, despite the miracles, despite the provision of their needs, there was always something about which the Israelites were dissatisfied or displeased and over which they were willing to turn from God.

Christian, is this you today? Are you not content with that which God has provided? Are you so downtrodden that you rail against the one who set you free from your slavery to sin? Has He not promised that if we seek His kingdom first, He will make sure all of our needs are met? Let us not be as the Israelites. Instead, let us, as James exhorts, count it all joy when we face trials of many kinds. Let us, as Paul instructs, be grateful and give thanks in all things, even our trials, that we might be made holy by the One who is Most Holy.

    Spurgeon's Morning and Evening Devotions

    Morning, April 30

"And all the children of Israel murmured." Numbers 14:2

There are murmurers amongst Christians now, as there were in the camp of Israel of old. There are those who, when the rod falls, cry out against the afflictive dispensation. They ask, "Why am I thus afflicted? What have I done to be chastened in this manner?" A word with thee, O murmurer! Why shouldst thou murmur against the dispensations of thy heavenly Father? Can He treat thee more hardly than thou deservest? Consider what a rebel thou wast once, but He has pardoned thee! Surely, if He in His wisdom sees fit now to chasten thee, thou shouldst not complain. After all, art thou smitten as hardly as thy sins deserve? Consider the corruption which is in thy breast, and then wilt thou wonder that there needs so much of the rod to fetch it out? Weigh thyself, and discern how much dross is mingled with thy gold; and dost thou think the fire too hot to purge away so much dross as thou hast? Does not that proud rebellious spirit of thine prove that thy heart is not thoroughly sanctified? Are not those murmuring words contrary to the holy submissive nature of God's children? Is not the correction needed? But if thou wilt murmur against the chastening, take heed, for it will go hard with murmurers. God always chastises His children twice, if they do not bear the first stroke patiently. But know one thing- "He doth not afflict willingly, nor grieve the children of men." All His corrections are sent in love, to purify thee, and to draw thee nearer to Himself. Surely it must help thee to bear the chastening with resignation if thou art able to recognize thy Father's hand. For "whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom He receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons." "Murmur not as some of them also murmured and were destroyed of the destroyer."

I have some close friends who, for personal reasons, are conflicted about voting for Donald Trump. I voted for him. And though, as with any candidate running for political office, there is much to be desired about Trump, both as a man and a presidential candidate in terms of his policies, I found these words from an 1876 speech by former slave and abolitionist Frederick Douglass, titled Oration in Memory of Abraham Lincoln, to be helpful to me personally:

"Though he [Lincoln] loved Caesar less than Rome, though the Union was more to him than our freedom or our future, under his wise and beneficent rule we saw ourselves gradually lifted from the depths of slavery to the heights of liberty and manhood; under his wise and beneficent rule, and by measures approved and vigorously pressed by him, we saw that the handwriting of ages, in the form of prejudice and proscription, was rapidly fading away from the face of our whole country . . . We saw Abraham Lincoln, after giving slaveholders three months' grace in which to save their hateful slave system, penning the immortal paper [Emancipation Proclamation], which though special in its language, was general in its principles and effect, making slavery forever impossible in the United States. Though we waited long, we saw all this and more."

Keep in mind that Douglass was no great admirer of Lincoln. He knew that on the issue of slavery Lincoln was not an abolitionist. In fact, in that same speech, he said, "You [white people] are the children of Abraham Lincoln. We [black people] are at best only his step-children." My point is that though Lincoln, in totality, was not the kind of president Douglass wished him to be, he was nevertheless an ardent supporter of Lincoln knowing that, though he had to "wait long," Lincoln was the right candidate to support.

    I'll leave it there.
