• Christian, whom do you serve? Jesus said you cannot serve two masters (Mt. 6:24).

Are you serving men? Yes, we are called to do so in a proper manner, but our service to others is an extension of our service to God.

Are you serving money? Being consumed by a desire for material wealth leads to grief (1 Tim. 6:9-10). God promises if we seek first His kingdom, He will provide our needs (Mt. 6:33), and with that, Paul teaches, we should be satisfied (1 Tim. 6:8).

Are you serving self? This is the most difficult master from whom to separate. Yet Jesus exhorts that, in order to follow Him, one must deny himself (Lk. 9:23)

It is Christ we are to serve (Col. 3:24), and God through Him. We are to be steadfast in this, abounding in the work of the Lord, not working as though for men, but for God (Col. 3:23). We have no excuse to do otherwise. God provided what we need to be fully equipped for every good work (2 Tim. 3:16). Let us by faith, therefore, set about the good works for which God called and saved us, which He prepared beforehand for us that we might walk in them (Eph. 2:10).

"Ye serve the Lord Christ." Colossians 3:24

To what choice order of officials was this word spoken? To kings who proudly boast a right divine? Ah, no! too often do they serve themselves or Satan, and forget the God whose sufferance permits them to wear their mimic majesty for their little hour. Speaks then the apostle to those so-called "right reverend fathers in God," the bishops, or "the venerable the archdeacons"? No, indeed, Paul knew nothing of these mere inventions of man. Not even to pastors and teachers, or to the wealthy and esteemed among believers, was this word spoken, but to servants, ay, and to slaves. Among the toiling multitudes, the journeymen, the day labourers, the domestic servants, the drudges of the kitchen, the apostle found, as we find still, some of the Lord's chosen, and to them he says, "Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ." This saying ennobles the weary routine of earthly employments, and sheds a halo around the most humble occupations. To wash feet may be servile, but to wash His feet is royal work. To unloose the shoe-latchet is poor employ, but to unloose the great Master's shoe is a princely privilege. The shop, the barn, the scullery, and the smithy become temples when men and women do all to the glory of God! Then "divine service" is not a thing of a few hours and a few places, but all life becomes holiness unto the Lord, and every place and thing, as consecrated as the tabernacle and its golden candlestick.

    "Teach me, my God and King, in all things Thee to see;
And what I do in anything to do it as to Thee.
All may of Thee partake, nothing can be so mean,
Which with this tincture, for Thy sake, will not grow bright and clean.
    A servant with this clause makes drudgery divine;
Who sweeps a room, as for Thy laws, makes that and the action fine."

  • Christian, do you suffer with physical difficulties? Illness? Injury? Disability? This should come as no surprise - we live in a fallen world, inhabiting corruptible bodies.

Paul describes this fallen world as follows: “For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God” (Rom. 8:19-21).

One day, the world shall be set free from its corruption; until then, it waits and degrades, as do we. As Paul continues, “even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body” (Rom. 8:23).

Paul himself suffered with an issue that most believe to be a physical impairment, as Paul describes in 2 Cor. 12 his “thorn in the flesh” that tormented him in order to keep him humble. Timothy suffered “frequent ailments”, and Paul instructed him to drink wine for relief (1 Tim. 5:23). Neither was healed in this life.

The promise for us, that to which we look forward, for which we wait eagerly, is “our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body” (Rom. 8:23). Let us then when not healed, as did Paul, recognize that in our weakness God is shown to be strong and the power of Christ is able to dwell in us (2 Cor. 12:9). For when we are weak, then we are strong (2 Cor. 12:10).

    Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening Devotions

    Evening, December 4

"Even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body." Romans 8:23

This groaning is universal among the saints: to a greater or less extent we all feel it. It is not the groan of murmuring or complaint: it is rather the note of desire than of distress. Having received an earnest, we desire the whole of our portion; we are sighing that our entire manhood, in its trinity of spirit, soul, and body, may be set free from the last vestige of the fall; we long to put off corruption, weakness, and dishonour, and to wrap ourselves in incorruption, in immortality, in glory, in the spiritual body which the Lord Jesus will bestow upon His people. We long for the manifestation of our adoption as the children of God. "We groan," but it is "within ourselves." It is not the hypocrite's groan, by which he would make men believe that he is a saint because he is wretched. Our sighs are sacred things, too hallowed for us to tell abroad. We keep our longings to our Lord alone. Then the apostle says we are "waiting", by which we learn that we are not to be petulant, like Jonah or Elijah, when they said, "Let me die"; nor are we to whimper and sigh for the end of life because we are tired of work, nor wish to escape from our present sufferings till the will of the Lord is done. We are to groan for glorification, but we are to wait patiently for it, knowing that what the Lord appoints is best. Waiting implies being ready. We are to stand at the door expecting the Beloved to open it and take us away to Himself. This "groaning" is a test. You may judge of a man by what he groans after. Some men groan after wealth- they worship Mammon; some groan continually under the troubles of life- they are merely impatient; but the man who sighs after God, who is uneasy till he is made like Christ, that is the blessed man. May God help us to groan for the coming of the Lord, and the resurrection which He will bring to us.

  • **The Politics Of Cause And Effect**

    https://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2025/12/the_politics_of_cause_and_effect.html

The short article linked above explains one of the many problems we have with the current manifestation of our government; the delay in seeing the results of our decisions in the voting booth. One cause is the usually interminable slow process of our elected representatives enacting and implementing policy changes to effect necessary changes, whether at the local, state, or federal levels. Unless they have a personal agenda or are otherwise motivated. [*Wink wink*] Think of the Patriot Act or the TARP act.

While due diligence and thoughtful deliberations are necessary to achieve needed changes, the dog and pony shows we see in our governing bodies obscure our ability to connect cause and effect. It seemingly starts with tight-lipped politicians who refuse to be open and transparent about their thought processes, rightfully fearful they will reveal their lack of depth and clarity, thus exposing their inability or unwillingness to think long-term and big picture for the common good. Or fearful they'll lose the support of special interest constituencies necessary to retain their incumbency. So they resort to orchestration of the publicly seen process, a liturgy to sustain an illusion of openness and transparency and public duty.

Then come the drawn out bureaucratic processes of study groups, hearings soliciting stakeholder and public comments, trial balloons of flawed proposals subsequently returned or redirected to staff or committee or board or commission for further review or refinement. All of this occurs within the supposition (or desperately held hope) there's an ethos and culture within the hired government bureaucracy of ethical conduct, competence, and stewardship. Which given the odds, are likely isolated to only a few departments within the bureaucracy.

Earlier I stated, "It seemingly starts with tight-lipped politicians..." It would be more accurate to say it starts with the electorate, most of whom pay scant attention to the issues, who themselves are trapped in a short attention span prison, consumed with their pressing personal needs, despair, and distractions; unwilling to think critically, and more committed to relationships than principles. And then there are those who would naturally, instinctively, and cynically take advantage of their failure (refusal?) to think long-term and big picture. Those would be the so-called political class; the thought leaders, the deal makers, those lobbying and jockeying for advantage, the king makers, those pandering to increasingly narrow special interests.

I believe bell curve distribution of attributes are usually accurate. Bell curves don't have to be symmetrical and pretty, but they're usually workable depictions. And societal structures are historically pyramids.

Walt Kelly, creator of the Pogo comics, said it best in 1970.

    Rant over.

  • Brethren, be thankful to the Lord, for He has chosen to show you mercy. Yes, showing you mercy is God’s choice, “For He says to Moses, ‘I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion’” (Rom. 9:15).

This is a difficult passage for many, but it reveals for us God’s sovereignty in all things. God is creator and upholder of all (Gen. 1; Heb. 1:3). All belongs to Him, as Scripture delcares, “The earth is the Lord’s and all it contains, the world and those who dwell in it” (Psalm. 24:1). Does He then not have right to do with His possession as He pleases?

Therefore, again I say, be thankful! For God has dealt mercifully with us, even though His mercy is undeserved. If He were to deal justly with all, all would be condemned, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23).

We should neither decry nor dismiss God’s sovereignty; rather, we should be grateful for it. Left to ourselves, we would all stand condemned. Yet God, in His great mercy, according to His good pleasure, saves those who otherwise deserve it not.

Therefore, be humble in your salvation, because all you have contributed to it is the sin that makes it necessary. And show mercy to others (Mt. 5:7), because as Jesus instructed, freely we have received, therefore freely we should give (Mt.10:8).

    Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening Devotions

    Evening, November 25

"For He saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion." Romans 9:15

In these words the Lord in the plainest manner claims the right to give or to withhold His mercy according to His own sovereign will. As the prerogative of life and death is vested in the monarch, so the Judge of all the earth has a right to spare or condemn the guilty, as may seem best in His sight. Men by their sins have forfeited all claim upon God; they deserve to perish for their sins- and if they all do so, they have no ground for complaint. If the Lord steps in to save any, He may do so if the ends of justice are not thwarted; but if He judges it best to leave the condemned to suffer the righteous sentence, none may arraign Him at their bar. Foolish and impudent are all those discourses about the rights of men to be all placed on the same footing; ignorant, if not worse, are those contentions against discriminating grace, which are but the rebellions of proud human nature against the crown and sceptre of Jehovah. When we are brought to see our own utter ruin and ill desert, and the justice of the divine verdict against sin, we no longer cavil at the truth that the Lord is not bound to save us; we do not murmur if He chooses to save others, as though He were doing us an injury, but feel that if He deigns to look upon us, it will be His own free act of undeserved goodness, for which we shall for ever bless His name.

How shall those who are the subjects of divine election sufficiently adore the grace of God? They have no room for boasting, for sovereignty most effectually excludes it. The Lord's will alone is glorified, and the very notion of human merit is cast out to everlasting contempt. There is no more humbling doctrine in Scripture than that of election, none more promotive of gratitude, and, consequently, none more sanctifying. Believers should not be afraid of it, but adoringly rejoice in it.

  • Believer, when you feel you are in the deepest of pits, do you wallow in your misery, or do you cry out to the Lord? If you do not cry out, why do you not? The Lord hears our voice when we call to Him (Lam. 3:56). He does not close His ear to us. When we draw near to Him, He draws near to us (Jas. 4:8). Why then withdraw in the lowest of times, when you need Him most?

Remember, we have an advocate with the Father (1 Jn. 2:1). He is our mediator (1 Tim. 2:5). He is at the right hand of God interceding for us (Rom. 8:34). Who then can condemn us?

Do not fret, beloved brethren, for no matter how far from God we may feel, He has promised never to leave nor forsake us (Heb. 13:5), and Jesus promised He would always be with us (Mt. 28:20).

Therefore, let no adversity shake your faith nor drag you down. Instead, shout, “Hallelujah!”, because we have a Lord who lives, Who has redeemed us, Who has pleaded the cause of our soul (Lam. 3:58).

    Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening Devotions

    Morning, November 20

"0 Lord, Thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul." Lamentations 3:58

Observe how positively the prophet speaks. He doth not say, "I hope, I trust, I sometimes think, that God hath pleaded the causes of my soul"; but he speaks of it as a matter of fact not to be disputed. "Thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul." Let us, by the aid of the gracious Comforter, shake off those doubts and fears which so much mar our peace and comfort. Be this our prayer, that we may have done with the harsh croaking voice of surmise and suspicion, and may be able to speak with the clear, melodious voice of full assurance. Notice how gratefully the prophet speaks, ascribing all the glory to God alone! You perceive there is not a word concerning himself or his own pleadings. He doth not ascribe his deliverance in any measure to any man, much less to his own merit; but it is "thou"- "O Lord, Thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul; Thou hast redeemed my life." A grateful spirit should ever be cultivated by the Christian; and especially after deliverances we should prepare a song for our God. Earth should be a temple filled with the songs of grateful saints, and every day should be a censor smoking with the sweet incense of thanksgiving. How joyful Jeremiah seems to be while he records the Lord's mercy. How triumphantly he lifts up the strain! He has been in the low dungeon, and is even now no other than the weeping prophet; and yet in the very book which is called "Lamentations," clear as the song of Miriam when she dashed her fingers against the tabor, shrill as the note of Deborah when she met Barak with shouts of victory, we hear the voice of Jeremy going up to heaven- "Thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul; thou hast redeemed my life." O children of God, seek after a vital experience of the Lord's lovingkindness, and when you have it, speak positively of it; sing gratefully; shout triumphantly.

They touched each of them with an ice cube.
Some of the guys blistered as if they had actually been branded!

The Subject of Cognitive Dissonance as a Social Change Strategy in Education
A few years ago, I did a big write up on cognitive dissonance and American voters. This paper was the final requirement for the writing program at Liberty University, and in a roundabout way, kickstarted my deeper study into persuasion and propaganda. I feel that cognitive dissonance is often misunderstood, as most people seem to think it simply represents a state of confusion. This is true, there is definitely a state of confusion known as dissonance, however, the dissonance usually arises when an individual’s behavior doesn’t align with beliefs, or when they are confronted with new information that contradicts their beliefs. Most of the cognitive dissonance research revolves around the strategies adopted by the individual to reduce the psychological discomfort. For instance, when a person is confronted with information that challenges his or her fundamental position, they may choose to research the new information and adopt it to reduce dissonance, or they may make excuses for whatever reason they may be holding on to their previous beliefs. In all truth, sometimes new information can be wrong, and the more rooted someone is in their beliefs, the more likely it is there will be no dissonance at all, in my opinion. Another means of reducing dissonance is called effort justification. This is where the work put into achieving a certain objective is defended even though the objective may not have been reached. B. F. Skinner explains it by saying that “those who work productively because of the reinforcing value of what they produce, are under the sensitive and powerful control of the product.” What does this mean? It means that personal effort put into any action can be a controlling mechanism for the individual. Look at COVID and mask mandates. People insisting on wearing masks despite the contradictory information concerning their effectiveness, were under the control of their own virtue signaling. It was a means of reducing the dissonance they felt when confronted with the truth of mask wearing efficacy. They simply adopted the attitude that it was for the greater good. A lot more can be said about reduction strategies. This article, however, is going to discuss another aspect of cognitive dissonance that people need to be made aware of. This is the method being used to teach it to gullible students. Brace yourselves now…. It is important to understand that cognitive dissonance research falls under a larger paradigm concerning attitudes and attitude change. The investigations that have taken place since Leon Festinger first coined the term cognitive dissonance, in 1957, have been done from the perspective of understanding what drives a person to change their attitudes. Cognitive dissonance is but one of many avenues that fall under the persuasion/attitude change umbrella. What I will be discussing now revolves around college professors, and perhaps even high school teachers, and how they are presenting the theory to their students. Instead of simply teaching them about the theory itself, some professors are using it as a means to an end − as a manipulative strategy to induce attitude change in their students. Children and young adults who may hold counter-attitudinal positions to what their professors are teaching are being told their opposition, or discomfort if you will, is cognitive dissonance. Yes, you read that correctly. Student’s that are responding in opposition to their professor’s anti-American, left-wing diatribes, are being told – in some instances – that they are experiencing cognitive dissonance, and that feeling of discomfort can be reduced by going along with the program. For example, George Mason University Professor, Paul Gorski, writes in an article entitled Cognitive Dissonance as a Strategy in Social Justice Teaching, that he likes to create dissonance by asking his students if they believe the founding fathers were all Christians. He then presents them with information commonly cited among leftists claiming they were not Christians, but deists. This is a term used to describe someone who may adhere to the belief in a God, but not necessarily a specific religious doctrine. He states that the idea of our founders being Christian places White people in a “privileged bubble.” This is already problematic as the lesson is hinting at severe leftwing bias. It is, according to Gorski, his job to break that bubble and guide the students to a new understanding of reality once they come to grips with the truth. “As an educator, it is my work to create a context in which these new relationships will, indeed, be constructed, rather than one in which students hide or flee from the dissonance that underlies these golden opportunities for learning. Continuing with the activity, then, I might ask, “What if I told you that most of the land-owning White men we call ‘Founding Fathers’ were not Christians at all? Or that many of these men, including Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and John Adams, identified as deists—people who believed in a higher universal power or God, but not in organized religion or supernatural revelation?” (Gorski, 2009) He goes on to say that it is his job to create an environment where students are learning to respond to new information in a way that allows them to feel comfortable in accepting new realities, while at the same time, “strengthening their wills” against the temptation to employ intellectual body armor to protect old, and outdated beliefs. When I was a student in the Northeastern State Social Work Program, my professors employed a very similar strategy. One in particular, asked the students if anyone had grandparents who didn’t vote for Obama, while subtly implanting the idea that the reason may be because of racism. This certainly created a sense of dissonance in many of the students, and I watched in amazement as many of them struggled with this idea in their head while accepting it as a possibility to reduce the feelings of discomfort created by such a decietful tactic. Another article worth looking at, in the Journal of Teacher Education, is called – Reducing Resistance to Diversity Through Cognitive Dissonance Instruction: Implications for Teacher Education. This paper revolves around cognitive dissonance as a means of overcoming resistance to multicultural education. The author writes that creating an awareness of dissonance – or discussing cognitive dissonance – before the students automatically resist what they are being taught, could be a good strategy to get them to reflect on what they are hearing, encourage critical thinking, and create a classroom environment conducive to learning. All of this is fine; however, they are being manipulated into believing their initial reactions to what they are hearing are wrong, or worse yet, racist and bigoted. To illustrate this, the authors use the essay White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack, by Peggy McIntosh. Ironically, this is the same essay I had to write a position paper on when I was told I wasn’t fit to be in the social work program at NSU. I was a student in 2010, and the paper being discussed was published in 2001. In this paper, the professors discuss an experiment that they conducted by having students write their own response to the Mcintosh essay. These responses were analyzed in terms of agreement/disagreement to discern how effective the introduction of cognitive dissonance theory was in lowering resistance to leftist indoctrination. The results were interesting. First, the authors said that more research is needed on how to obtain an accurate measurement of potential resistance levels before and after the topic of cognitive dissonance is introduced. It was found, however, that students who were exposed to dissonance education were less resistant to the ideas in multicultural education than students who were not exposed to it. In other words, they are studying how to most effectively get your children or grandchildren, to discard their own values and beliefs and willingly adopt new ideas under the guise of being told, their resistance is cognitive dissonance.
