  • Smoke and Wing

    Smoke rises from the pipe
    like whispers of the ancestors,
drawing a path between two spirits —
man and bird, earth and sky.

    The canoe stays still
    Yet time quietly drifts by,
between the sacred breath of the forest
and an old prayer never forgotten.

The black bird meets the smoke
    soft as an unspoken memory,
its gaze steady — no fear, no division,
    only knowing, only thanks.

    The man says nothing,
    But he gives the universe
    In a single white breath
    that drifts into the stars.

  • Spurgeon's Morning and Evening Devotions

    Evening, July 18

"Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk every one in his path." Joel 2:8

Locusts always keep their rank, and although their number is legion, they do not crowd upon each other, so as to throw their columns into confusion. This remarkable fact in natural history shows how thoroughly the a Lord has infused the spirit of order into His universe, since the smallest animate creatures are as much controlled by it as are the rolling spheres or the seraphic messengers. It would be wise for believers to be ruled by the same influence in all their spiritual life. In their Christian graces no one virtue should usurp the sphere of another, or eat out the vitals of the rest for its own support. Affection must not smother honesty, courage must not elbow weakness out of the field, modesty must not jostle energy, and patience must not slaughter resolution. So also with our duties, one must not interfere with another; public usefulness must not injure private piety; church work must not push family worship into a corner. It is ill to offer God one duty stained with the blood of another. Each thing is beautiful in its season, but not otherwise. It was to the Pharisee that Jesus said, "This ought ye to have done, and not to have left the other undone." The same rule applies to our personal position, we must take care to know our place, take it, and keep to it. We must minister as the Spirit has given us ability, and not intrude upon our fellow servant's domain. Our Lord Jesus taught us not to covet the high places, but to be willing to be the least among the brethren. Far from us be an envious, ambitious spirit, let us feel the force of the Master's command, and do as He bids us, keeping rank with the rest of the host. Tonight let us see whether we are keeping the unity of the Spirit in the bonds of peace, and let our prayer be that, in all the churches of the Lord Jesus, peace and order may prevail.

  • Spurgeon's Morning and Evening Devotions

    Morning, June 30

"And the glory which Thou gavest me I have given them." John 17:22

Behold the superlative liberality of the Lord Jesus, for He hath given us His all. Although a tithe of His possessions would have made a universe of angels rich beyond all thought, yet was He not content until He had given us all that He had. It would have been surprising grace if He had allowed us to eat the crumbs of His bounty beneath the table of His mercy; but He will do nothing by halves, He makes us sit with Him and share the feast. Had He given us some small pension from His royal coffers, we should have had cause to love Him eternally; but no, He will have His bride as rich as Himself, and He will not have a glory or a grace in which she shall not share. He has not been content with less than making us joint-heirs with Himself, so that we might have equal possessions. He has emptied all His estate into the coffers of the Church, and hath all things common with His redeemed. There is not one room in His house the key of which He will withhold from His people. He gives them full liberty to take all that He hath to be their own; He loves them to make free with His treasure, and appropriate as much as they can possibly carry. The boundless fulness of His all-sufficiency is as free to the believer as the air he breathes. Christ hath put the flagon of His love and grace to the believer's lip, and bidden him drink on for ever; for could he drain it, he is welcome to do so, and as he cannot exhaust it, he is bidden to drink abundantly, for it is all his own. What truer proof of fellowship can heaven or earth afford?

"When I stand before the throne
    Dressed in beauty not my own;
When I see Thee as Thou art,
    Love Thee with unsinning heart;
Then, Lord, shall I fully know-
Not till then- how much I owe."

  • Oh that we might have but a taste of Christ's love, or a mere glimpse of the surface. We cannot in this life grasp the fullness of its depth, but we can experience it and share it with others.

    Spurgeon's Morning and Evening Devotions

    Morning, March 28

"The love of Christ which passeth knowledge." Ephesians 3:19

The love of Christ in its sweetness, its fulness, its greatness, its faithfulness, passeth all human comprehension. Where shall language be found which shall describe His matchless, His unparalleled love towards the children of men? It is so vast and boundless that, as the swallow but skimmeth the water, and diveth not into its depths, so all descriptive words but touch the surface, while depths immeasurable lie beneath. Well might the poet say,

    "O love, thou fathomless abyss!"

for this love of Christ is indeed measureless and fathomless; none can attain unto it. Before we can have any right idea of the love of Jesus, we must understand His previous glory in its height of majesty, and His incarnation upon the earth in all its depths of shame. But who can tell us the majesty of Christ? When He was enthroned in the highest heavens He was very God of very God; by Him were the heavens made, and all the hosts thereof. His own almighty arm upheld the spheres; the praises of cherubim and seraphim perpetually surrounded Him; the full chorus of the hallelujahs of the universe unceasingly flowed to the foot of his throne: He reigned supreme above all His creatures, God over all, blessed for ever. Who can tell His height of glory then? And who, on the other hand, can tell how low He descended? To be a man was something, to be a man of sorrows was far more; to bleed, and die, and suffer, these were much for Him who was the Son of God; but to suffer such unparalleled agony- to endure a death of shame and desertion by His Father, this is a depth of condescending love which the most inspired mind must utterly fail to fathom. Herein is love! and truly it is love that "passeth knowledge." O let this love fill our hearts with adoring gratitude, and lead us to practical manifestations of its power.

  • Communion Meditation for 23-March-2025

I will open with scripture from Psalms 19:14. “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.” Through Christ, amen.

Good morning church family. I hope each of you is well today on this beautiful March Sunday. The topic of our Communion Meditation today is “Cornerstone.”

Jesus often used parables, or representative stories, to deliver his message to the common people of the day and many people did not understand the true meaning of the parables. Just like the way The Rocky and Bulwinkle cartoon show had two levels of understanding, one for children and one for adults.

The cornerstone was the first and most important stone placed in construction of a stone or masonry building in ancient times. Today, with modern construction practices, cornerstones are mostly ceremonial or decorative rather than functional. A Keystone is the top, final, last stone fitted into an arch that keeps the arch intact by gravity and by the geometry of the stones. Stay with me, I will get to the point!
The word, “Cornerstone” is mentioned multiple times throughout scripture as a metaphor for Jesus as the foundation of the church and of our faith. The Word’ “Keystone” is also mentioned in scripture, used interchangeably with “Cornerstone” in some instances. The cornerstone and the keystone are first and last in building construction, Alpha and Omega.

REV 22:13. “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and Last, The Beginning and the End.”

Isaiah 28:16. “Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.”

EPH 2:19-20. Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone.

1 Peter 2:6. Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

References to Cornerstone are also representative of how the Pharisees, high priests, and other religious leaders rejected Jesus as Messiah.

PS 118:22. “The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.”

Acts 4:11. “This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.”

Finally, woe unto those who reject Him.
MAT 21:44. “And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.”

    Let us pray:

Father God, master and creator of the universe, we thank you for the gift of your Son, Jesus, the cornerstone of your church and of our faith. We can never begin to repay you for the sacrifice of your son, Jesus, or earn the forgiveness and salvation you have given to us. As we prepare to take communion in His honor, let us always bear in mind that the cup and bread represent His sacrifice that bore our sins away. We praise you and worship You, Father, on this Sunday and on every day. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.

  • So, during the sermon today, the pastor talked about how the earth and heavens will be destroyed with a fervent heat and the sound that will be very loud. He mentioned maybe it will be an atomic bomb. I disagree. And this thought hit me today during the sermon. After the 1000 year reign, the Bible does say that the earth and heavens will be burned and destroyed. But look...the Bible says that in Heaven, there will be no need for the sun nor the moon as God Himself will be the light. Look at how different our sun looks now as compared to just 20 years ago. It's almost white. I think that after the 1000 year reign, the sun will literally explode and that will cause the earth and heavens to melt with a fervent heat. Imagine how it will sound if the sun explodes. And it's so large that it will destroy everything in the heavens. Of course, we will be under God's protection as we will be in Heaven. Regardless, God created the universe and everything in it, so He can destroy it in whatever way He sees fit. If there is no need for a sun and moon, then I could see Him destroying them.

  • Meditation for April 14, 2024 _ After Holy Week _ D. Franklin

Communion Meditation for 14-APRIL-2024: After Holy Week.

Good morning, Church Family! I hope each of you is well on this beautiful Sunday morning! Two weeks ago, we celebrated Resurrection Sunday; and Holy week has now passed for another year. The Robins Egg Easter candies are all gone; and Christ has risen! Amen? So, what happens next?

Our communion meditation today addresses Jesus’ activities here on Earth following His Resurrection and through His Ascension to the Father, a period of approximately 30 days. In this one-part meditation series, we will review just a few of Jesus’ activities and sightings of Him. These witness accounts further support the argument that Jesus was undoubtedly resurrected from death and was seen publicly many times among the people following his resurrection.

There are specific dates associated with some of these accounts. Note that these dates are from the Roman calendar which starts each new day at midnight; not the Hebrew calendar which starts each new day at sunset.

    1. Jesus appears to Mary Magdalene. Sunday, April 9, 30 AD. Mark 16:9 - 11, John 20:11 – 18: Mary is the first person to whom Jesus chose to reveal himself alive after his resurrection. This occurred at his tomb early Sunday morning after God brought him back from the dead. Mary at first did not recognize Him, mistaking him for the gardener. Then she recognized Jesus, and He instructed her to go tell the other followers.

    2. The Road to Emmaus. Sunday, April 9, 30 AD. Luke 24:13 – 33:Jesus unexpectedly appeared to two followers while they are walking to Emmaus (Luke 24:13 - 33). They discussed the events of the week, and He then explained to them all the Biblical verses and prophesy pertaining to the Messiah. He mildly criticized them for not believing what the prophets foretold regarding His coming. They did not recognize Him until after he departed from them. One of the two is Cleopas, the other was likely his wife, Mary, though some accounts identify the second as the Apostle Simon.

    3. Appearance with His followers. Sunday, April 9 after sunset. John 20:19. This is the first time Jesus showed himself alive to his followers. Most of the disciples had been hiding behind closed doors since Jesus was arrested in fear of persecution by the Jews. The Apostle, Thomas, was not with the group at this meeting.

    4. Doubting Thomas
Sunday, April 16 after sunset. John 20:26 – 29. This was the fourth time Jesus showed himself to humans to prove he has risen from the dead and the first time all those (except Judas) who ate Passover with him saw him as a group. In this passage of scripture, The Lord allowed Thomas to observe the wounds he received on the cross, for Thomas to overcome his doubt.

    5. Sea of Galilee, Jesus appears to 7 disciples that were fishing
Between April 17 and May 17. John Chapter 21: 1 - 14. This is the account of the disciples fishing all night and catching nothing. From the shore, Jesus instructed them to cast the net on the other side of the boat, which yielded a net full of 153 fish.

    6. Jesus appears to a multitude Between April 17 and May 17
In 1 Corinthians 15:6. The apostle Paul describes Jesus appearing to a crowd of more than 500 people at one time, then again meeting with his brother James.

There are other additional events documented in scripture, including Christ’s Ascension to Heaven on May 18, witnessed by his disciples as described in Matthew 28:18 - 20. Shortly after this, the disciples receive the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, and begin preaching, healing and establishing Christian churches throughout the region.

Jesus, in spiritual form, converts the Pharisee, Saul of Tarsus, who had persecuted Christians even to death, to the Apostle Paul on the road to Damascus. Paul became man of great faith, as we know, establishing churches and writing half of the books of the New Testament.

Holy week has passed for another year, but the work of our Risen Lord continues every day, every week of the year.

    Let us pray:
Father God, master and creator of the universe, we thank you for the sacrifice of your son and the gift of your grace. We know we can never repay you for the sacrifice of your son, Jesus, or earn the forgiveness and salvation you have given to us. As we prepare to take communion in His honor, let us always bear in mind that the cup and bread represent His sacrifice that bore our sins away. We praise you and worship You, Father, on this Sunday and every day. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.

    What a great post.
Let me tell you a little story about the circle of life.
Yesterday, my 80-year-old mom told my nearly 50-year-old self to bring my laundry upstairs. Then, she instructed me how to clean a pot I've had for two decades. And then, when I was packing a few boxes for returns, she reminded me to make sure I blacked-out the labels or else the post office wouldn't know what to scan.
And that's when I responded with, "Mom! This isn't the first time I've done this, you know!"
She just laughed at me and drank her tea and rearranged her magic purse that has everything in it from medicine for every ailment and tissues to nail clippers and candy.
I don't know why I responded so curtly. I guess I just was tired and didn't want to be told what to do.
The irony wasn't lost on me when throughout the day, I said things to my teenagers like, "Hey, did you send in that form yet?" and "Take your coat upstairs" and "OMG! Put that bowl in the dishwasher."
And each time, they responded with the obligatory, "I know, Mom!"
I would laugh at their exasperation and return to what I was doing.
Last night, my 16-year-old and I went to the wake of a lovely woman who happened to be the grandmother of my daughter's best friend.
As I hugged my friend, the mom to my daughter's bestie and the daughter of the deceased, I watched as one of her kids brought a pair of tweezers back to her.
She explained, "As we were coming here, I just started throwing everything in my purse that I thought I would need, just in case. Of course, one of the kids needed them. My mom always did that for us."
And I couldn't help thinking about grandmas and their special purses, and how mothers show their love.
Sometimes we show it by nagging--or gently reminding--about looming deadlines and chores that need to be done.
Sometimes it's by setting rules and boundaries to keep them safe.
Sometimes it's by doing laundry when your child--no matter what their age--doesn't have the time or cooking a special meal or changing sheets.
Sometimes it's laughing off a snarky comment.
And sometimes, it's simply being there, saying nothing at all.
The universe showed me something pretty special yesterday.
It reminded me of all the love I give and receive throughout the small details of my life, and how lucky I am to have it spread through three generations right now.
A mother's love is rarely shown in grand gestures, but if we're lucky, woven into a lifetime of small, meaningful moments of kindness and selflessness and generosity that knows no bounds.
And when the time comes, in the magic purses grandmothers carry--when these grand women start slowing down but still want to be there for their family.
Until it's time to pass that tradition on to the mothers coming after.
Love your people hard today, in whatever small ways you can show it. Treasure the ways they show their love to you. Don't take one second for granted.
    xoxo,
