• Believer, is God unjust in His dealings with humanity? May it never be! Our God is a just God, and any penalties He imposes for sin are surely earned and absolutely justified.

Yet God is also a merciful God. In His patience, He delayed punishment for many, waiting for the appointed time when His salvation would be revealed in Christ. And so, He how shows mercy and justifies those who believe (Rom. 3:21-26).

To whom does He show this mercy? To whomever He pleases, according to His will. As Scripture says, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy…So then, He has mercy on whom He desires…” (Rom. 9:15-18). Does that make Him unjust? By no means!

As already stated, He is just and justified in condemning those who sin, for that condemnation is earned. Showing mercy to some is in not injustice - it is grace. “Where then is boasting? It is excluded” (Rom. 3:27), because our justification is not earned, it is granted.

It is God who justifies. It is God who saves. It is God who chooses, as Jesus even said to His disciples, “you did not choose Me, but I chose you” (Jn. 15:16).

Let us therefore be humbled by the fact that God is “just, and the justifier of the one who has faith” (Rom. 3:26). We have contributed nothing to our salvation except the sin that made it necessary. We do not justify ourselves, but in His mercy, God justifies us according to His will, for His glory. “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Eph. 2:8-9).

    Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening Devotions

    Morning, September 25

"Just, and the justifier of him which believeth." Romans 3:26

Being justified by faith, we have peace with God. Conscience accuses no longer. Judgment now decides for the sinner instead of against him. Memory looks back upon past sins, with deep sorrow for the sin, but yet with no dread of any penalty to come; for Christ has paid the debt of His people to the last jot and tittle, and received the divine receipt; and unless God can be so unjust as to demand double payment for one debt, no soul for whom Jesus died as a substitute can ever be cast into hell. It seems to be one of the very principles of our enlightened nature to believe that God is just; we feel that it must be so, and this gives us our terror at first; but is it not marvellous that this very same belief that God is just, becomes afterwards the pillar of our confidence and peace! If God be just, I, a sinner, alone and without a substitute, must be punished; but Jesus stands in my stead and is punished for me; and now, if God be just, I, a sinner, standing in Christ, can never be punished. God must change His nature before one soul, for whom Jesus was a substitute, can ever by any possibility suffer the lash of the law. Therefore, Jesus having taken the place of the believer- having rendered a full equivalent to divine wrath for all that His people ought to have suffered as the result of sin, the believer can shout with glorious triumph, "Who shall lay anything to the charge of God's elect?" Not God, for He hath justified; not Christ, for He hath died, "yea rather hath risen again." My hope lives not because I am not a sinner, but because I am a sinner for whom Christ died; my trust is not that I am holy, but that being unholy, He is my righteousness. My faith rests not upon what I am, or shall be, or feel, or know, but in what Christ is, in what He has done, and in what He is now doing for me. On the lion of justice the fair maid of hope rides like a queen.

Those who belong to Jesus are surrounded by those wicked in God’s sight. That is the reason we see powerless law, injustice, and perverse judgement.

  • Psalm 7:3-5
    O LORD my God, if I have done this; if there be iniquity in my hands;
If I have rewarded evil unto him that was at peace with me; (yea, I have delivered him that without cause is mine enemy:)
Let the enemy persecute my soul, and take it; yea, let him tread down my life upon the earth, and lay mine honour in the dust. Selah.

David knew that he was innocent of whatever he was being accused. He knew that there was no intentional iniquity in this particular situation. We know from reading the scriptures that David never plotted against the king. He respected Saul and the fact that God had anointed him. He humbled himself before the king. He had been falsely accused by the king of treason and an assassination attempt. Even after being falsely accused by Saul, David never rendered evil for evil. David had the opportunity. 1 Samuel 24:4 says, "The men said, This is the day the LORD spoke of when He said to you, ‘I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.' Then David crept up unnoticed and cut off a corner of Saul’s robe." He could have wrought havoc against Saul, but because of his love for the LORD, his integrity and his respect for the king, he did no harm to Saul.

David prayed and asked the LORD to let him suffer if he had rewarded evil to the one who was at one point at peace with him. He was willingly offering up his life if he was in the wrong. David's giving up the opportunity to mete out his own justice served as a testimony for him. Had he chosen otherwise, it could have meant his doom.

Believers, it would serve us well to walk in this kind of integrity. It would serve us to never repay evil for evil. God sees all the injustices rendered to us, and He lets no sin go unpunished. Proverbs 11:21 says, "Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished: but the seed of the righteous shall be delivered." His judgment is better than ours. He can handle our enemies better than we can. Let us the LORD deal with those who come against us. Let us continue to walk in His commands, doing the things that please Him and He will take care of the rest.

  • How many can say they would endure half of what this man has been put through. They all loved him before he became The President. Every single one has turned their back on him and the injustices perpetrated on American Citizens. I pray that after he wins this election that he cleans out the entire body of political traitors; local, state, and federal levels.

  • Job 3:17-19
There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary be at rest.
There the prisoners rest together; they hear not the voice of the oppressor.
The small and great are there; and the servant is free from his master.

These words should bring comfort to the soul of the believer. We are headed to a place where there will be no more wicked rulers, no more tyrants, no more slave masters, no more oppressors, no more attacks, no more injustice, no more crime or broken laws or misery or sadness or sickness or pain or harm or DEATH. We will rest in the presence of the One Who has saved us from all of that! We will enjoy the perfection that He has prepared for us. We will worship Him hour after hour after hour, in the fullness of joy (1 Peter 1:8, 4:13).

As I mature, I look more and more forward to heaven. I love things about this earth, such as family, friends and church...but my desire to be in the presence of the LORD grows each day. My daughter shared with me that she used to pray that the LORD would wait to come after this happened or that happened, but she says now she prays "Come LORD Jesus...and soon!!!" (I think she may be maturing also! Lol!)

Believer, take comfort in the fact that this is only temporary. The misery that we endure here on this earth is only for a while. One day we will be in the presence of our Savior...which is far better (Philippians 1:23).
